Kind of thing. Did you like your plan? Would you use it again? Just looking for some insight. Thanks. I am hoping to ride one loop of the course in early June to get a feel for it. It has been 60-70 for a number of days in town- so we rode dirt! Boulder has an awesome city park for mountain biking that they maintain really well. So- we were having fun on dirt. I can believe how awesome my mtn bike feels - after replacing the broken headset at the end of last year (it took me way too long to figure out what was wrong and why I was riding like crap)! Hey- It's Tuesday- Did I miss the goals thread? I'm going big this week 2X swim, 2X bike and 2X run- but mostly because I already got a swim and bike in yesterday. |

Kind of thing. Did you like your plan? Would you use it again? Just looking for some insight. Thanks. I am hoping to ride one loop of the course in early June to get a feel for it. I used my own plan that I developed from Joe Friel's Going Long book. In retrospect I would have done things a little differently. I didn't do any threshold work just long easy riding. I did a few local bike races but that's it in terms of speed work. I couldn't do a lot of run training because of injury and by the time I figured out a method to train for the run without aggravating my injury it was almost too close to the event to make a difference. In my opinion all the endurance you'll ever need for an IM can (and should be) be developed on the bike. If I were to do another one, I would run 2km everyday (with the occasional longer days) and spend most of my time on the bike and in the water. I've looked at the Be Iron Fit training plan. I think Scott used it for his IM. It seems to be a decent one. It lacks in certain areas but for the most part I think it's a workable plan. Okay, thanks. I have Friel's Triathlete's Training Bible but haven't read the whole thing yet so I'll see what/if he's got suggested plans in there. I will spend more time on the bike -- I think that will help preserve my knee too for the run. Great advice, thanks. I plan to run/walk the marathon piece - hoping to maintain 1 mile runs with 1 minute walks in there (strategically placed around the water stops...). I have felt at only 2 swims a week it's lacking there a little bit so I might add at least a 3rd and/or 4th swim at shorter distances to build technique and consistency. I get a little worried sometimes when I look at how others are training for the same race, and while I'm following my plan - they are already biking for almost 2 hours then going for a 7 mile run right after... I'm not there yet (maybe I am but that's not what my plan has me doing). I'm not comparing myself per se, more wondering if I'm doing enough, that's all. Edited by aviatrix802 2016-02-16 10:39 AM |

I used it for my HIM, and worked very well. Alan has a deeper understanding of the training itself, but I found it flexible enough to fit it in my busy life. Agree that most of running and biking is time/distance wise, not effort-based, but I did my HIM in 5:15, so all my doubts went away after crossing the finish line. I plan to use the Be Iron Fit plan for the day I go full crazy and sign up for a full IM. Juan I've gone full crazy so I'll let you know how it works out! |

I had to sit on the bike for about 3 minutes at the end just to get feeling back in my legs! I *might* have pushed it a tad too hard. #69--2000 yds in the pool at lunchtime. Some exciting news--the masters class is starting up a lunch time session! The normal sessions are at 6am, which I just can't do, try as I might. I'm hoping this sticks around a while, because I'd love to join. It won't work for me for a couple of more week though, since they start at 11:45 and I teach until 12:05, but after mid-March, if I don't go to Egypt (still waiting for permission), I'm so on it! |

462 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Jenn-I followed the competitive plan last year. I fell of the wagon for the runs a little and on race day did a walk run, but I thought it was great. I was looking for a 14 hr since my HIM was 6:30 and pulled out a 13:30. Had I put more effort on the run I could have broken into the 12's. I will be following it (mostly) again this year for my HIM but I plan to cap the long rides at 4 hrs and the long runs at 2. use the extra time to lift and improve speed. I am different from Alan in that I find that when my running legs/lungs are there I bike and swim much better. I am a weak swimmer and if I remember correctly you are a strong swimmer so you should be able to crush my time. A little more on the infinit: I started training eating BP sandwiches on the bike and played with various sport drinks. I liked skratch but found I was not getting the calories I needed. I was feeling bloated and full from the food and the liquid. I was told about Go Far and tried it out. I LOVE it. On race day I packed a few sandwiches but only ate 1 or 2 I had 3 bottles of Go Far. I also staged ziplock bags with Go Far in ziplock bags at special needs. I put base nutrition salt in each bottle for added salt (I am a heavy sweater). At each water stop for the bike I rode by grabbing a bottle and drinking most of the bottle then dropping it. I refilled my bottles at special needs and did the same thing. I ended up giving away my sandwiches from bag to the volunteers and other racers. I also took a small travel sunscreen in special needs bag that I used then handed that off as well. The sun screen was key as I saw many many burnt people the next day. Did a brick today 30/15. Having knee pain and my HR is WAY high for where it should be but its a start. Good to hear good things about the plan! That makes me feel better by quite a bit!! I'm going realistic and saying 15 hours. I'm an average swimmer probably - I swam 44 min for 1.2 in the Aquabike (though I will say the swim was nasty and there was some stopping while people ran into each other due to no visibility) so realistically that would be and hour and a half swim (no current here!). I recall your bike was 6:46 - I won't come close to that as B2B from what I've seen is fairly flat and IMMT has 5900' elevation gain. I am petrified of this. I'd love 7 hours maybe? (based off a 55 mile ride I did here to the top of a notch and back for 3940' of elevation gain took me 3.5 hours. I've never run a marathon (maybe 5 HM) but my HM pace (with an injury every time) has been an average of 2 hours so I'd double and add at least a half hour for 4.5 to maybe 5 hours. Granted those numbers only get me to 13.5 hours, but you have to add in the fatigue of the distance so I'm gracing myself with another 1.5 hours. hahaha (depends how many beers I sneak into my special needs bags...) I'll know more in a few months - particularly if/when I drive up to the course before the kids get out of school and do one loop of it. That will really tell me what I need to know for bike training weaknesses. My PT's wife will hopefully go with me for the prep ride (she races so that will be huge incentive to push it). I'll bet my sil crushes 12 hours. She was 5:59 in Tupper Lake Toughman HIM and she is training like a fiend right now! It would be fun to watch her, she's super strong and lives at 6500'. I'll pepper you guys with more questions as the months go by... special needs bags, did you do a HIM to help train?, what to do with things like going camping and you're remote so can't really do much, stuff like that. Dave Q, did you ever feel like you needed to get off your bike on the nasty hill? Alan, you've driven part of the Tupper Lake HIM course, how do those rollers compare to IMMT? That wasn't an easy course - maybe medium, but the gain only shows about 2,444' (745m) in that race. My avg speed there was 16.5. (though I was in rough shape due to screwing up my nutrition and about being in tears with a horrifying saddle). Okay, I'll stop now. I very much appreciate everyone on this site. Super motivating and positive. Good stuff. |

Expert 1662 Spokane, WA | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open A couple of things. I went out for a 9 pm run tonight. This never works out to well for me. I get lightheaded often. Tonight, a car was slowing down as I was crossing an intersection and was rear ended hard by the vehicle behind it. The car was pushed right on past where I had just been running maybe 2 seconds prior. Close call. Totaled the front end of the Cherokee and the rear end of the Murano. Everyone was OK, and insured. Stay safe out there while your getting your workouts in. I decided to take this week and repeat my runs from last week rather than build. I do not feel like I yet have the runs under me to go from 6.2 to 8.2. Next week I'll make that jump. This week I'll try to improve on my times of my 4 and 6 milers. It's like whittling away at a good book. Only gets better the further your into it. I had a PT appt. today. My first one ever. I've had some back pain since I got fat and out of shape 3 years ago. I had my back go out back then, and I've never felt right since. He was awesome. He is also a distance runner, and confirmed that with the injury I have, that running will only help strengthen the muscles around the vertebrae that are bothering me and to get back into shape. Never been happier leaving a doctors office as I was today. |

462 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Kevin glad your OK. Getting hit by a car sucks Jenn- I did both an OLY and a HIM last year where the plan calls for them. I would advise you to build in 3-4 weeks where you can float workouts if needed. I also ran a sprint so used that week as a low volume week, from what I remember I just repeated the race week of the OLY. I would not have finished as fast if B2B had the elv gain that you will be facing. Good luck and keep us posted. If IM Raleigh fits in let me know I am signed up already. So had a little FUBAR this morning. I set my alarm for 2:50 (so I thought) to get a ride in before work, but when it went off I realized it was set for 3:50. I was not happy but nothing I could do about it. maybe I can get it in after work. I am not convinced that my wife didn't change my alarm so it didn't wake her up at 2:50. |

37 ROTHESAY, New Brunswick | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Jenn, I wouldn't get too worried about the hills at IMMT, you live in Vermont, so you get to train on hills ever day. If you lived in Kansas, yes, then be worried. I hear IMMT is not as bad as it sounds. When I trained for my IM way back in 2000, That year I did a couple of Oly distance races and a HIM. I did a mini one week taper for the HIM. It was a confidence booster more than anything before doing the full. I never ran a marathon before IM either, and my HM time was just under 2hrs. I did IM Florida and swam a 1:15, biked 5:55, but the run killed me and I shuffled to the finish line in 5:35. Not sure if I bonked or my legs just gave up. Walked a lot of the second half of the marathon. My special needs bags on the bike contained solid food that I knew worked for me in training, PBJ sandwiches and fig newtons. Special needs on the run was a just a long sleeve shirt since I knew I would be finishing after dark, and was worried about getting cold. It ended up tied around my waist for 21km. The bike course was really flat, which makes it fast, but it keeps you in the same aero position all day. I prefer a hillier course so I can change position, stand up and climb, rest on the downhills. I'm planning IMMT in 2017, was contemplating doing it this year, but have been away from triathlon for so long that I knew it would be survival finish and that's not something I want to do again. I had a coach when I did my first Ironman, and may use one again next year. Being in aviation you know how weird our skeds get, and it makes following a Mon-Fri training sked difficult. I may start throwing my bike in the back of the airplane when going on long trips. Originally posted by aviatrix802 Originally posted by b2b14 Jenn-I followed the competitive plan last year. Extreme Veteran 2098 Alberta | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Well it has been a super busy couple of weeks for me. First it was off for a mini holiday in Phoenix! Great weather, great beer, great food...scared to get on the scale. Rented a bike for the weekend as well as trailing running and hiking. Bikes were beaters but they worked fine for what we needed. Phoenix knows how to treat bikers. Must have crossed paths with at least 100+ bikers in an hour of biking! Got back Tuesday. I started an outdoor hockey tournament last year. this is the second year. Came back to +11 Celsius. Ice was shot. Moved to plan B and changed to ball hockey. Had two teams drop out. We spent 3 days removing ice from rink...crazy week but well worth as we had great feedback on tournament. Of course my training suffered this past week!

Okay, so exaggerating a little, but it was a tough swim today. There there three college teams warming up for their meet (starts at 2pm) when I was there. So, you know, like 10 people per lane and all going FAST. I was buffeted about to say the least! Had my metabolism tested this morning. Not sure about the results yet, as the printer wasn't working. I have to wait for them to fix the printer and then get the results. Wasn't a great experience. Apparently I'm against breathing through tubes. Didn't panic, but there were a couple of close calls. |

I don't have any experience with it specifically but anything with that many different fonts and so many claims in bolded colourful lettering on one page always reeks of bull$hit to me. I looked at the 'Why it works' section and it does seem to be based on common and established training principles. Would I spend $100 on it? Probably not. This paragraph was mildly alarming: "I understand that The Triathlon Dominator Package is exclusively available on this website only, and I will instantly be receiving over $657 of valuable triathlon training blueprints. I understand that none of my friends can pick this up on Amazon or Barnes & Noble or the local library. " This makes it sound like its some exclusive thing but frankly if it were a good system with a high demand, it WOULD BE on Amazon because they would generate more revenue there and have access to a bigger market. I don't know. It might be a perfectly good program but the layout of the website resembles a sketchy penis enhancement advertisement and that's unsettling. Edited by adempsey10 2016-02-17 4:44 PM |

Most of the IMMT course is a 6 lane highway and generally they try to make the hills as gradual as they can rather than sharp rolly rollers on smaller highways. |
