Does anyone know if the bike course is ridable??? I read that it wasnt paved entirely yet. Anyone know if you can still ride on the unpaved portion?

Let us know how the trip goes.

I talked to someone on the weekend who did the Lisa Bentley camp and she said the ride is a challenge, but doable.

I'm sort of looking forward to the race, more so that after once it's done and I can say I have completed it.

The athlete's video says it's all paved but some sections may be rough... sounds like typical Ontario back roads.

I was up at Deerhurst yesterday for the day and rode the entire course. Somehow I started off the worong way, but eventually hooked up quickly where i shoud be. The unpaved portion is about 3 km long. It is at the very start of South Portage Road about near the 70 km mark. It caught me by surprise because as you go around the corner from Brunel onto South Protage, you turn onto the gravel. It is ridable...I am glad however, that I am slow enough that there should be too many people around me when I get to that point...lol...If any of you did the Coburg Oly this year...Its not as loose of gravel as that if you stay on the hard surfaces, but it does go on for 3km...a tense 3 km. By the looks of it, I'm gonna guess that they arent going to pave it...It took me 3hours 40min to do the entire course. I dont think I could go much faster, but i am not normally competitive. I averaged 26 km/hr. I did Coburg Oly bike in 1 hr 32 min for comparison...There really are no flat portions...and there are a few of those 'little' steep hills that come out of no-where. They are the hardest for me. The majority are long steady inlcines i found.

If anyone is going up to ride the course and would like to ride, let me know...I wouldnt mind doing it again before the 'big day'.

Ok, I just recveived an e-mail from Mitch Fraser about the course (cuz I e-mailed him to see if the route was 'rideable' before I left and this is what he said

"All the surfaces have been covered at this point. Keep in mind they have used a high float on Dwight Beach Road and the surface is still compacting. The road will be swept before the race. This is also the case on South Portage but the high volume of traffic is compacting the road much better".

So, they do not actually plan on paving it before the race. Be careful...

Thanks for the update re the roads. I had also heard from my LBS that there was going to be some gravel spots, but not as loose as Cobourg last weekend.

It's getting closer to race day and I'm still getting more nervous each day.

You're not the only nervous one.... we're only 2 weeks away now!!!

I've got one more long run (Sunday) and long ride (Monday) planned then taper. I only have four more work days this week and then I'm off until after the race so I'll have lots of time to worry about everything in the next 2 weeks.

Sounds like we are all in the same boat!!

What's the temperature like up there right now in the mornings? Scott and I soon need to start thinking of putting of stuff together. We will be heading up north to Canada on Wed Sept 10th. Right now down here in NC we are battling the heat and humidity and I am sure we will notice a slight climate change.

I am looking forward to Friday night's banquet dinner. I guess we'll have to plan to meet somewhere before heading in so we can all sit together. We may want to exchange cell numbers as well!

I'm not a good person to answer your question Leanne because I'm always cold.. anything below 70F and I'm in long sleeves on the bike. At my last race (Aug 3) I froze on the bike and wished I'd had a jacket.... I don't know what I'll do in Muskoka.. I'm bringing clothes for every scenario and hoping that it's warm in the morning.

The 14 day weather forecast for Huntsville says rain and high 22C for Sept 14. ... let's hope that changes !

I can't find a 14 day forecast. This week is still pretty warm but the 10 day forecast is showing cooler and wetter weather coming in. My half IM races are usually finished off by a meltdown on the run, so I'm kind of looking forward to cooler weather as long as it does not get too cool.

That sounds like it will be good temp and conditions.

I swam at cherry beach last night to try out my full wet suit which I bought on Friday. Was pretty good. Swam for 45 minutes and the water was warm and calm. Hope the lake at Deerhurst is as calm and warm.

Because the body of water is smaller in Muskoka than at Cherry Beach, the water should be warmer - easier to heat up from the sun. Last I swam at Cherry Beach (last week), the water was so warm that my coach didn't even wear a wetsuit.. I wore a sleeveless one and was sweating at the end. Water temps shouldn't be an issue. Plus it's only a 1.9 km swim, in there for no more than 40 minutes hopefully!!!

Based on my 51minutes at Cobourg for a 1.5k swim, I'll be in there for almost an hour. Hopefully, if the lake is calm, then maybe I'll be out in a decent time. Anyway, I'm going to ask to be moved to an earlier wave, just to make sure I can get out before the 1hr 10 minutes cut off time.

They will not move you to an earlier wave, only to a later one.

The cutoff is 1:10 from the start of the fnal wave, so it's not likely anyone will miss it.
