Tuesdays at 4pm PST should work okay for me. I am at work though so I may have an occassional meeting conflict or something.

I am going to see if I can get the Mental training book from the library. There's a good one close by. I'll check it out on the weekend.

I usually go for a long ride on Saturdays and Sundays and Saturday night I am riding in the velodrome. I could chat between 2:30pm and 5:30pm PST on Saturday.

sorry jen. log on when you do get up and see if we are still there. no day/time seems to work for everyone, so we'll probably move the day/time around so that everyone can make it at least one or two.

it was just me and elektra tonight. since scott, jen, and brad have not been able to make it to a chat yet, i though i would leave it up to them to pick the next chat time. i will bend over backwards to be there. the only times that donot work for sure for me are monday and saturday mornings. most other days, i'm pretty flexible, so just let me know.

this week in the weight loss challenge, i posed the question 'where do you get your nutritional information?' since most of us are working towards weight loss goals, and all of race and need to have a nutrition plan for a race, i thought we could talk about our nutrition plans, race nutrition, etc. or any nutrition questions we have.

for me, i've figured out what works race day, but during training i have a hard time finding the right balance between lower calories for fat loss, and having enough to fuel my workouts and feel good (and feel warm - between the loss of insulation and fewer coals in the furnace w/ reduced intake, i get cold really easily when i'm restricting calories).

I could definitely use some help in the nutrition area as well.  I know how to nourish my body during a marathon but I'm not sure those same guidelines will work.

That sounds like a great topic for me as I have NEVER had a gel or done any refueling during a race. This past weekend when I went for a run with my running buddy, she had a gel before we left (about a half hour prior to running) and complained of stomach pain throughout the first half of the 6 mile run. I am a little anxious about eating while running. This weekend, my long training run for the half marathon next month is 12-13 miles. This will be the longest distance I have ever gone and I need some coaching.

i have only had some minor stomach upset from gels...usually when i take them w/o enough water. i started out using clif shots, but once i tried some other brands, i realized that they tended to give me a burst of energy, versus sustained energy. egels seem to give me the best sustained energy, but w/ some stomach upset, and way too much crap added (added food coloring - what is the point of that???). i have just started using hammer gels, and so far so good (and no added color). of course, there are lots of other things you can eat, including solid food - bananas, oranges, bagels. there are gummi sharks and gummi blocks, and drinks galore. try a few things and see what works...but try them out in your runs a few times before the 1/2 marathon. you don't want stomach upset race day.

hey y'all! sorry i haven't been on task the last few days. we've had a crazy couple of days...plus fi has a cold AND cabin fever, so she hasn't been too tolerant of me being on the computer. anyway, hope everyone is doing well.

anyone have any specific goals for february? here are mine:

+ swim at least once a week (that's not asking too much, eh?)
+ strength train 3x a week (or yoga, pilates, or bodypump class)
+ use the heck out of my new gym membership
+ ride my bike outside (well, one of my bikes at least)
+ stick with the chris carmichael periodization nutrition plan
+ work on mental training once a week

next?

My goals for February (depending on some things)

* do yoga as many days as possible before surgery

* go to PT as soon as I am able and STICK WITH IT! No matter how much it hurts

*get back in the pool and on my bike as soon as possible

*listen to my docs and my PT

* keep on smiling, baby

*try not to lose muscle mass in upper body and left leg (I probably will lose weight as I lose muscle mass- so I really want to watch what I eat)

Glad to see the group going again! I would love to hear everyone's goals and am still interested in talking about nutrition. I also bought the Mental Training book and have read the first few pages. I, too, have had a rough time with kids being sick and still struggling with that. However, my goals for February include:

* Run my first half marathon on February 24th which means I will probably still focus on my running the most

* Strength train 3X per week

* Get back in the pool!! It has been FOREVER since I have been swimming and need to start paying attention to this. I am NOT a fast swimmer, but I am steady and can easily swim a mile without training too much. I just need to work on getting faster and I am hoping that my strength training will help this

* Get outside and put some miles on my new bike! The weather has not been conducive to outdoor riding and I don't have a trainer. However, it looks like their is some good weather in the forecast

* Stay consistent with weekly weigh ins and continue to pursue weight loss goals

OK, now for my question. This past weekend, I did my long training run and I am now up to 14 miles. This was my longest run ever and it was GREAT! I had been in a meeting all day and was meeting up with a friend before the run so I didn't have much time to prepare. I didn't take a gel or use any other nutrition and didn't at all feel like I needed it. So my question is, if you don't feel "hungry" or low energy on a long run, should you still refuel during the run?

Hi guys,

Sorry February has been a busy month at work. My goals are for the season:

  • Tour De Delta Crit Finish With the peleton
  • Kelowna Criterium 1st place
  • Cypress Hill Climb top 5
  • Team Coastal Thursday Night Criteriums: Race with Cat 4 men
  • Escape Velocity Spring Series 1st River Road race: 1st woman
  • 40km TT in under an hour

I guess my February Goals would be to make the weekly hours in my training plan which is:

This week: 5.5 hours

Next week: 8.5 hours

Week after: 10 hours

Week afer that: 11 hours

The 11 hour week which is just the end of February includes one of my goals (Escape Velocity Spring Series 1st River Road race: 1st woman) as that is the first race of the season.

Weightloss is one of my goals though I don't really know how to go about it.

I feel somewhat stuck. I guess I am fairly satisfied with my weight, 130lbs, so I don't put much effort into weighloss. I would like to lose 10lbs, to help me get faster and to feel better about myself, but I guess I don't want it enough. For example, I work in an environment where there are lots of snacks available whenever we want. I usually try to take a banana, but sometimes I end up eating way too many pre-packaged rice krispie squares, wagon wheels and chocolate covered granola bars. I feel like I have no willpower.

My nutrition information mostly comes from friends/my SO. My SO is fairly well read up on nutrition for cyclists though, so I feel okay taking his advice. When I grew up, my mother taught me about healthy eating and I did a lot of the cooking for the family when I was youngers, so I feel like I have a good grasp on what I should be eating, it's just harder to do in practice when there is tastier stuff (i.e. chocolate) readily available.

I also think I eat too big of portions, but food tastes so good.

Thanks for bringing this topic up autumn.

Boy do I agree on the weightloss issue! I have recently lost 15 lbs, but my goal would be to lose another 10. That would put me at my ideal weight. However, my motivation is waning right now and I HATE cooking. Maybe if there were healthy meals delivered at my doorstep, I could do it. Oh well, I am just feeling disgouraged right now as I just finished my son's Cheez its which he didn't eat and they have 11g of fat!
