possum - aw, don, I am glowing because you love Joni Mitchell! Me too! Do you think we were separated at birth? And Blind Boys of Alabama? Another of my faves. you and me- we're soul sistah and brutha

Works for me.

My mother passed away years ago, but I saw a photo of yours in your album. Maybe she could adopt me?

don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got till it's gone...

ha ha. she's a great mom, but you'd struggle with her stubborn refusal to ask spiritual questions. On the other hand, I've seen YOU album, and if all those great kids came with the package, she might even cave and go church a few times!

Well, then it would definitely be worth it.

I'll even move to China first if she needs it to be a foreign adoption.

Thanks, that just move to #1 on my list.

My Dad died three years after my Mom.  He's buried at Arlington, and of course they played it at his grave site.

I may have never cried more during a song.

OK, here's the HAPPY tearjerker. It's about how it feels to get it RIGHT, at least, it's how I feel.

Words that Bring a Tear
(Buskin and Batteau)

Too many deadlines clouding up my sight
Too many voices in my ear
Too much of daytime, take me to the night
Where the truth goes walking out beside me
These conversations we have in the dark
They rattle through the empty in my soul
You’re my salvation you have struck a spark
Now I’m following a trail I thought was cold
(chorus)
How did one so young become so wise
I think you’ve opened up my eyes
And if you and I go wandering down the days imagining
We would find the things that we hold dear
Like the shadows on the snow
Like the light this time of year
Like the birds that never go
Like the words that bring a tear

Too many dollars to pretty up the lies
I add my contribution to the din
‘Til I wake up sweating and I find to my surprise
That I can’t go out the door that I came in
That old temptation it roots me to the spot
I can’t imagine giving up the game
You’re my inspiration, you show me what I’ve got
Though you call it by a dozen different names

How did one so young become so wise
I think you’ve opened up my eyes
And if you and I go wandering down the days imagining
We would find the things that we hold dear
Like the shadows on the snow
Like the light this time of year
Like the birds that never go
Like the words that bring a tear

Too much delusion dressed up in the light
There’s too much phony science bein’ sold
I’m in confusion take me to the night
Where the foolish go out walking with the bold
This course correction, it might be into the wind
But somehow you make my worrying absurd
You’re my connection to where all songs begin
And I hope I’ve got a few you haven’t heard

How did one so young become so wise
I think you’ve opened up my eyes
And if you and I go wandering down the days imagining
We would find the things that we hold dear
Like the shadows on the snow
Like the light this time of year
Like the birds that never go
Like the first star to appear
Like the coming of the dawn
Like the running of the deer
Like the words that bring the tears

dontracy-Thanks...it was the hardest thing I've EVER dealt with in my life. We lost my gramma, grampa, dad, aunt, and a very close friend all in a six month span from Oct 94 to March 95, OUCH...it's a hard time of year for me, that's why I'm glad I have all of you guys here!!! Y'all are great! And I can see from a previous post that you know what I'm feeling in that regard.

Anyway, a couple more I thought of...

Beth Nielson Chapman - Sand and Water. They played this song at the end of and ER episode a couple years back (the episode was called Sand and Water as well) and they played it a mother was taking her premature child up to the top of building to die, she just wanted him to see the sky. UGH...so so so sad...I think I actually cried myself to sleep that night cuz part of the lyrics were "all alone I heal this heart of sorrow...all alone I raise this child". Reminds me of my mom trying to raise my brother without his father. UGH...now I'm all upset. I need to get off this topic!!!! LOL

Celine Dion's rendition of Ave Maria...just absolutely gorgeous.

Lift High the Cross - We sang this at my dad's funeral and I can't even sit in church and NOT sing it without crying nevermind trying to actually open my mouth to even get out a sound.

I Know That My Redeemer Lives - Another weep-inducing hymn.

OK that's enough for me before I have to get up from my desk and go to the bathroom to cry. And yeah, I'm sooooo not afraid to cry. I don't care if I don't live up to the "men don't cry" thing. I cry more than some girls I know...just keeps me balanced!

I agree with the above. Try playing taps and not choking up before you are finished.

For me, Abide with Me and Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ra(An (Irish Lullaby) do it every time. Abide with Me was one of my grandpa's favorite hymns and was played at his funeral. My Aunt would rock us to sleep as kids while singing or humming Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ra. I heard it again for the first time in about 15 years a couple months ago. She passed two years ago at this time. It stopped me in my tracks and brought tears.

coredump - 2005-12-15 11:05 AM I've got a couple:

Harry Chapin - Cats in the Cradle
Fleetwood Mac - Landslide
Johnny Cash - Hurt ( doesn't make me cry, but tears at my soul )

-C

Cats in the Cradle gets me every time.  Every time I hear it I immediately think of my son and wanting to spend more time with him before he grows to old to want to do things with his Dad.

I agree.  Thanks, Chris.  No way to describe it until you are standing there, watching the flag being folded up.  That single instrument, clearest sound you ever heard, playing a tune you know so well but it's like you're hearing it for the first time.  The silence afterward is the loudest sound in the world.

I agree with a few of the other songs... Amazing Grace, such a wonderful song.... however it always reminds me of funerals. And my inability to change reality. Random Christmas songs make me cry, if I pay to much attention, because they remind me that my uncle died on christmas day, or more specifically of the three young children that he left behind.

"She's Falling Apart"
Lisa Loeb

They pull up their chairs to the table
She stares at the food on her plate
At the toast and the butter
Her father, her mother, she pushes away

And they rise in the morning
And they sleep in the dark
And even though nobody's looking
She's falling apart

She gets home from school too early
And closes the door to her room
There's nothing inside her
She's weak and she's tired of feeling like this

And they rise in the morning
And they sleep in the dark
And even though nobody's looking
She's falling apart

They call her for dinner, she makes up a reason
She looks at her arms and she rolls down her sleeves
And her mother is starting to see through her lies
And last night her father had tears in his eyes

And they rise in the morning
And they sleep in the dark
And even though nobody's looking
She's falling apart

And we rise in the morning
And we sleep in the dark
And even though nobody's looking
She's falling apart

Maybe the lyrics to this hopeful song will give you a lift:

ALLELUIA
(Julia Fordham)

ALLELU
ALLEUIA
I MADE IT THROUGH
THE DAY WITHOUT YOU
JUST A DAY
ANOTHER DAY
BUT I'M ON MY WAY

    FOR A HUSHED SWEET MOMENT
    EVERYTHING MADE SENSE
    AND ALL MY MISPLACED JUDGEMENTS
    WERE AWASH WITH INNOCENCE
    FOR A HUSHED SWEET MOMENT
IT FELT LIKE TIME STOOD STILL
I ONLY KNOW I LOVE YOU
    AND THAT I ALWAYS WILL

BY THE SHORE
NEAR THE HARBOR
A DISTANT LIGHT
SHINES ON THE WATER
JUST A LIGHT
OH DISTANT LIGHT
GUIDE ME THROUGH THE NIGHT

    CHORUS

AN ALLELUIA CHORUS
RANG OUT ACROSS THE WAVES
I HAVE NOT GONE THE DISTANCE
BUT I AM ON MY WAY
