Did any of you get a feeling the swim was too long? Judging from the times of the top swimmers from last year and this year it appears the swim was about 150-200 meters long. I know my swim time was more than I expected. Everything else was OK. I can't judge as I don't have enough experience. Isn't there a fudge factor with the swims though? My personal swim was a bit long 'cause I was on the outside of the mob. The fast swimmers were between 2 & 3 minutes slow. That means the slower swimmers may have been 6-8+ minutes slow. If it was only a couple people it would be one thing, but not a single person was under 20 minutes whereas last year many were close to 18 minutes. A guy I know who went about 18:30 last year was about 22:00 this year. Two weeks ago he swam 18:30 in a local Splash & Dash so he hasn't lost any speed. I did the same Splash & Dash in 28:30, but at the Peak I was 33:43 (out of the water in 32:40 ). I don't think either of us suddenly got lots slower. I don't mind that the swim was long, but it messes up comparisons with past races. I was also slower on the bike than my previous efforts and I think the speed limit was a factor. Not only does the speed limit cost time in that little stretch, but since the speed isn't as great going into the next section it costs time there as well. I hadn't done the Peak for several years and the last time I hit 56 coming down Old Stage. These little things helped turn what could have been a course PR into a PW. Of course my lack of training was also a factor. |
