I live in a family of gamblers from NOLA. When I was young, maybe 14, I started playing boure' (pronounced "boo-ray") with the adults, which is kinda cajun poker, but it's a trump game like bridge. If you don't take a trick or don't follow the rules, you match the pot on the next hand, and if no one takes a majority of tricks, the pot rolls over. So even though it's nickel ante game,  we routinely had pots over 20 bucks and several times over $100.

Now it's Texas hold 'em.

I haven't played boure since college. We used to play that all night. Also like playing washers. Midwestern friend brought the game to us. Basically it is like horseshoes but it is washers instead and you throw it at a wooden octagon with a pvc pipe in the middle. You get 5 points for in the pipe. 2 points in the box. and 1 point a footlenth from the box.

I was wondering if anyone else knew the game. We seem to have a fair amount of coonasses here...I'm surprised more people haven't chimed in.

Connect Four
Balderdash
Scrabble. I never lose at Scrabble. No one can beat me.

Those are popular in my house too. You may have met your Scrabble match

My other favs when I get together with friends are:

Sequence
Shanghai Rummi
Scene It
Spoons

And, for the times I have no one to play with, I recently discovered Sudoku. I'm only a few days into that fad, so we'll see how long it lasts.

My recommendation:

Blockus is a great, fun game for any age.  We have an 8 yr old and a 5 yr old which can make it challenging to find a game that we ALL enjoy playing.  Love that it teaches analytical thinking!!

Just my .02

Looks great - my almost 5 year old will be getting that for Christmas!

I love Cranium, Sequence (Sequence for Kids is great too), Scattegories.

Now I am off to find out what PIT is...

I steer away from any game that might startle me. Operation stinks! My kids like to buzz it on purpose and it makes me nuts. Jenga freaks me out too. Games shouldn't be so stressful. Or maybe I just drink too much coffee.

Courtney, I am the scrabble queen. I wrote the words "Scrabble Queen" on the outside of my scrabble box, just so challengers could beware. I know, I know....scrabble queen, aquagoddess, I have issues.

I just had to edit this because I spelled Courtney's name wrong....some scrabble queen!

I have Scrabble on my computer. Too easy to cheat though, it gives you hints.

We usually play Scrabble when the kids are home for Christmas.  My son, the math & science whiz, who always struggled with his English classes, is the reigning family champion. Go figure.

I, on the other hand, am the Undefeated, Uber Grand Champion, El Supremo, Untouchable, Master & Commander of Trivial Pursuit.  My head is just exploding with billions & billions of trivial (useless) facts.

Mark
