Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh and another one. In reference to "sweet" tea. I was reared in Ms and then moved to Louisiana. In Ms, we had "sweet tea" and cornbread. In South LA, we have "tea" and "sweet cornbread". |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know you said Texas wasn't really southern, but I was raised in Texas and moved to Ohio in 8th grade. They all considered me a southerner and teased me accordingly. A couple of years later, our high school band took a trip to New Orleans. The bus driver was from LA and had a heavy accent. When he would say something over the PA, all the other heads would turn to me and they'd ask me to "translate". I told them that it wasn't the same accent, but I managed to interpret---THEN, the meals were provided for us at the hotel, and most of the kids had never seen grits---wanted to know why they were being served Cream of Wheat at dinner. And they asked me, "What the heck is sweet tea?" I shrugged my shoulders and said, "hello---tea with sugar in it!" Just bizarre. But what still grates on my nerves is when people say, "Loo-wheeze-E-Anna" instead of "Loose-e-anna." |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh, y'all are makin' me so homesick I could cry. Honey, you come on over here and you'll ALWAYS find a pitcher of sweet tea in the fridge. I don't get enough of the rest of the home-cookin' that I'd like, but that's partly because I can't eat it all by myself. I found myself a good-lovin' man, but one that doesn't like cornbread. Now, I'd like to say that in my part of Louisiana, we ate salty cornbread. That sweet stuff don't taste right. Martha White's Cotton Pickin' Cornbread, to be exact. Sadly, I can't buy it out here, and have to ask my mama to send it to me. Did any of y'all see Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard on TV on Sunday? Meet the Press, I think it was. My South has grown men who cry like babies when they talk about their "mamas" or anyone else's mama. In my South, hugs and tears are always close at hand. Family always comes first, even when you disagree. You may fight with your sister in the morning, but you'd defend her to the death that evening. My South has carports, not garages. In my South, catfish and hushpuppies are standard fare. Red beans and rice on Mondays, fish on Fridays (even if you're not Catholic). In my South, everyone is called "honey," "sugar" or "babe" regardless of how long you've known them. In my South, people don't take down their Christmas tree after New Years, they just change the decorations to Green, Gold, and Purple to signal the start of Mardi Gras season (from Jan 6 through Fat Tuesday). And, in my opinion, having lived in both Louisiana and East Texas, parts of Texas are considered the South. I think the westernmost border of "the South" would be Dallas. Houston is certainly in there. As is Port Arthur and Beaumont. But, then again, I'd think parts of Virginia would be too. Certainly West Virginia is. |

Science Nerd ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I guess I've adopted the South as my home. It's been quite an adjustment going from Wisconsin to Virginia. I'm not sure I'll ever get used to the heat and humidity during the summer. It's a nice place to be, but I miss Wisconsin. It's funny because I never thought I'd say that, but I'm looking forward to the ability to go back. I like the comment about being buried in cheese. It's so true! |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You might have hockey, but I was fortunate enough to watch most of your team play high school and college, God I'm glad Danny Heatly graduated. He is so good and I hate the Badgers. A great deal of my family is in the south, and my friends that I grew up with always seem to look at me funny when I say something "southern" or when I eat something and just pour the hot sauce on it. We had one restaurant here that as part of their advertising used the saying Ketsup is not a spice! That's pretty accurate, I have to really look for hot salsa in our grocery store, but when I find it I but them out. Or I make my own. Good Luck, Jay Check out WCHA hockey on the dish this winter, see the future of the NHL, or stop down to Florida in Dec to watch the UMD Bulldogs in the hockey classic. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm not sure about the dncing badger, but I love Wisconsin too. I'm over in Minnesota but spend most of my freetime chasing trout on the Kinni in River Falls or hunting deer in Downsville. Might want to wait until spring to come back. Tough to train at 20 below. Good Luck, Jay |

Once you cross the Mason-Dixon it simply does not exist. My mom just visited and ordered sweet tea. The server said, "uuhhhhh well, there is sugar on the table. I guess you could put that in some tea. Is that what you mean?". Moms was like WTF?!?!?!?!? What, your iced tea is sweetened too? Whenever I'd had that strange stuff that they call iced tea in the States, I was wondering WTF I was drinking. Thanks for letting me know that I can drink iced tea if I go to the South. Jen |

JenYeah, the trick is... you put the sugar in while the tea is still warm from steeping. People in the South take iced tea very seriously. It's considered the "house wine of the South" afterall. All Southerners I know who live out here are almost always certain to ask a waitress, "Do you have 'real' iced tea? Without any froo-froo flavors?" Funny story, I went in to a local fast food restaurant once to get a drink and asked the guy behind the counter, "Do you have 'real' iced tea?" Meaning, not that fake stuff that comes out of the fountain machine. His response was, "No, all we go is that brewed stuff." Uhhh.. ok. Edited by madkat 2005-09-07 1:20 PM |
