My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult - about a 13 yr old who was conceived via IVF to be her older sister's salvation from Leukemia. She hits her teens and sues to keep her kidney...instead of being forced by her parents to give to sister.  VERY GOOD!

Just finished "No Country for Old Men" Cormac McCarthy and "Absolute Friends" John LeCarre. The LeCarre, as ususal, is a real page turner. The McCarthy...well, it is a stunning book, but very brutal and dark. As a Texas girl, though, you might enjoy it.

If you are looking for something fun try Jane Smiley's "Horse Heaven", or Angela Carter's "Nights at the Circus".

P.G. Wodehouse's books are good for a giggle. Jeeves and the antics of Bertie Sooster crack me up!

Also the "Last Lion" books by William Manchester (about Winsotn Churchhill's life) and "Class" by Paul Fussell.

The Corrections - Jonathan Franzen
Jitterbug Perfume - Tom Robbins
Love in the Time of Cholera - Gabriel Garcia Marquez (currently reading it because of a post by Renée) - Possibly the best written book I have ever read. Translation by Edith Grossman.

I scared people in airports reading David Sedaris' Me Talk Pretty One Day earlier this year. haven't read Naked, but I'm going to get it for my Christmas trip. Dress Your Children in Corduroy and Denim is fantastic, too.

Another funny book in an utterly different way (also quite beautiful): The Dork of Cork--Chet Raymo.
