I have a 5.6k on Saturday.  I'm not expecting any times worthy of posting though.... considering all 1000+ entrants will be wearing gorilla suits.  I'll be a surfing gorilla... a gorilla in board shorts holding a surfboard.  So I'm hoping to just go sub 35minutes on this one.

I ran the 5k this morning.

Good news-  PR'd.  1:16 faster than my last 5k.

Bad news - missed the goal -- 20:33

Chanting "H-T-F-U" over & over helped, but not enough.  I'll keep an eye out for another 5k after Thanksgiving & redeem myself.

In the meantime, I'm focusing on 1:35:00 for my first half-mary.

Still planning on running one on Thanksgiving and I have done no specific 5k training. I've mainly been running two times a week in the same specific route. 4.61 miles along the marina (golden gate). Tends to be a little windy. I've gotten my pace time down from about 7:30  to 6:50 in about a month. Wondering if I should do some sprints or keep running this route. Wondering if I can bring it under 20 during a 5k...? Thoughts...?

Racing in a 10 K this coming Sunday that I signed up for before joining this challenge. Might sacrifice my 10 K time and run it like a 5 K and see what my time is at the split. Had to deviate from my training a little as legs have been giving me trouble but filling the void by riding more.
My last few training runs have been either really good or really bad, hopefully it'll be a good day come Sunday.

Riel - 2009-10-06 7:34 PM Hi all, Did a 10K run last weekend and came in at 46:33

I did a 10k last weekend and managed a 46:20 (which I am thrilled with).  I'm not up to trying for sub 20, but will try next weekend to break a 7 minute mile over 5k.

Finished my 10K race this morning and came in with a 5k split of 21:02, blah. Looks like the elusive sub 20 will have to wait until spring time. Maybe I'll try later on one of my training runs if the weather holds out.

I'm still having a hard time fitting in just a 5k.  I have a 4 Miler scheduled for Thanksgiving, so that might be close.

I did a half mary yesterday, 1:43:03 total time, but the last 5 miles were all at 7:30-7:35.. which gives me about a 22:50 3 mile pace... adjusted to 3.1 that's around 23:35.  Not exactly sub 20, but hey... it's a sustained pace after an 8 mile warmup done at just barely sub-8s.  So I'm telling myself I'm getting close without actually knowing what I'd do during just a 5k.

Anyone else getting close?

I have one more chance! Running a 5k race this coming Sunday and hopefully I'll pace myself better and see what happens. I believe this course has a bit more hills but I feel like Ive learned so much from my last outing that I will improve my time. We'll see what happens...

No luck in today's race. Came in at 22:21, groan... but in my defense the weather was bad and the course rough and soggy from the rain. Some of the route was on trails and grass so the rain made for lots of puddles and slippery conditions. Not giving up just yet, just means more training...keeping my chin up.

There's still time before the end of the year.  Hopefully you can get a perfect day for a race up there.  Based on some of the other times you've done during 10ks for your splits you should be pretty close to hitting the mark.  Good luck.

Ran the race this weekend and came in at 21:12.  I am incredibly psyched about that time.  No more 5ks before the end of the year, but I have to say I am very satisfied with my improvement in performance thus far.

If I keep improving at this rate I will be sub 4:20/mile by June of next year.  Bekele better watch out. Wink

I am not doing this particular challenge as I rarely run short distances in races.  However, I went from running a 12:00 mile a couple years ago to running a 23:30 5k a year ago to running a 26:20 4 miler with the 3 mile spilt being at 20 minutes.... so a 20 minute 5k may actually be possible for me next year.  Granted that 4 miler was at like a zone 5b pace.  Keep up the good work folks.

My goal is to break 20 minutes in the 5k in 2010. Are you guys rolling the 2009 challenge over into 2010? If so, I want to be a part of it!I'm 46 and male. Starting running about 3 years ago to get and stay healthy. Haven't tried a triathlon yet. My PBs are 24:03 for 5k; 50:16 for 10k; 1:58 for half; and 4:17 for marathon. Three years ago I weighed 218. Today I'm about 193, but know I need to get sub 180 to achieve my goals for 2010 - sub 20 in the 5k and sub 4 in the marathon.I'm also new to using these forums. Hope this post goes where it should.

I'm still working towards a sub 20.  Didn't quite make it to that point, but I did drop nearly 2 minutes off my time since October.  Just have 2 more minutes I need to drop to get there.  I think I'll be there once the summer comes around though... I perform better with a little warmth, my last race was around 15 degrees, snowing with a few inches of fresh snow on the entire course.  Not really the race to set a PR at.

I know this challenge was to get to sub20 by the end of the year, but I'm still working towards it.  Did a 22:00 5k yesterday.  So not quite there yet, but still a tremendous improvement over where I was in September.  I'm hoping to hit sub 20 around July, better late than never

Hello everyone!

I'm still in it as well. Just getting back into running after an injury (bike crash) and presently training for a half marathon in 3 weeks.
Planning on another sub 20 min 5k attempt later this spring or early summer.
Good luck to everybopdy.

Here we go again! Signed up for a 5 k race on March 7. Not expecting a great time but will be good to set a benchmark for future races.
This is the year I go sub 20! (I hope). I'll post my time after the race.

Ran the Bazan Bay 5 K race this morning. Came in at 21:49 (Garmin time) gun time was 21:51.
Not the best race I have ran but I'm going to try again this upcoming weekend. Going to sign up for another 5 K and try for a new PR and come in under 21 minutes for the first time.

Signed up for another 5 K this Saturday. Not too happy with my last 5 K attempt but feeling confident about coming close to breaking the 21 minute barrier this time around, baby steps...
