I'll be the contrarian on this. Sometimes the other person is actually curious about why I'm putting myself through all this. I usually tell them that I feel much better when I'm exercising regularly, and having a goal like a triathlon motivates me to exercise even when I don't feel like it. Sometimes this has led to an interesting conversation about goals, and I've encouraged them to set goal for whatever exercise they are pursuing -- walk a 5K, run a 10K or marathon, cycle a metric or regular century. I would rather recruit another exerciser than have them go away thinking I'm a superior-acting jerk.

Now if it's someone who's just yanking my chain, or someone who is persistently negative, that's different and I'll just walk away and not waste my breath on them.

Yep, I agree that most people who are giving you a hard time are jealous and they secretly wish they could do it.

How about this: The next time someone gives you a hard time ask them well what are you doing to keep yourself healthy and keep a healthy lifestyle? I bet you get a dumbfounded look and they can't answer.

The only one who's ever been negative about me doing triathlons is my wife and she's only really concerned about sacrificing family time. She's come round though, especially as our 3.5 year old now wants to do Tris too

Apart from that everyone is supportive. OK, some people think I'm nuts, but that's a compliment here in th UK.

But aggiecatcher, can you ask Ron about a name change. It sounds too much like Maggie Thatcher and is freaking me out a bit........

I've had the opposite experiences.  It seems everybody who knows what I'm doing seem to be more impressed, in awe, supportive, and encouraging (Maybe it's because I'm a 50+ year-old and they're able to appreciate some of the challenges triathletes face as more pronounced.   I guess the biggest negatives have come from a few old friends who knew me in a different time of my life, and about all they do is joke with me about wearing so much spandex.  I just ell them it makes me feel pretty...

Clifton - 2008-01-30 11:53 AM I encounter this quite a bit as well, most from people I used to go out to the bars with. Generally I just tell them my #1 reason for completing Tri's of all lengths, including my first Ironman this coming summer.... I have all the time in the world when I am old to sit in a bar pounding back beer after beer. You only get one youth and the last thing I'd want to think when I am shuffling along in my old age, unable to do much of anything, is "I wish I would have done more then sit in a bar during my good years". Besides if I am pounding back beers when I am old, in a nasty little corner bar....at the very least I'll have some interesting stories to tell about Ironmans.

x2  Plenty of time to drink later - - and I'm in that industry.  I get a lot of crap sometimes when we're at some function and I'm the only one not tipping a few back.  It's not that I don't have the occasional cocktail or a few beers, I do. It may sound corny, but I have more fun completing some distance than I do "after a few."

aggiecatcher - 2008-01-30 12:39 PM...I'm partially sensative about it since I'm frustrated about being injured, and more than one person has said, "well, you did that to yourself" since I got hurt playing sports by choice (it was actually my job when it started)...

LOL, I would just have to tell 'em, " I'll remember that line when you're (hoprfully) recovering form your heart attack or stroke. D.A."

My family and friends are supportive (supportive by not being negative, they really don't say much at all on it) of me and my triathlon lifestyle however occasionally I get the off comment on how it's no guarantee I'll outlive them just because I'm much more fit etc.

My brother in-law was at our house the day Ryan Shay died in the olympic marathon trial and I was talking about it with my wife and he says, "I think it's safer for me to just stay out of shape." And this is from a 36 year old heavy drinker and 2 pack a day smoker.

I responded to him that his comment might possibly be the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life....

I guess because I live here in good ole NYC, the mecca for the type A personality, I don't get harrassed for doing tris. Usually, I get people telling me I'm not training enough (which is true)!

aggiecatcher - 2008-01-30 1:09 PM  I need a snappy comeback that's not too insulting...any ideas?

Look them in the eye, lower your voice, lean into to them a bit and say "If you had any idea what being this fit has done for my sex life, you'd be training twice a day starting this afternoon."

Of all of the responses.......this wins hands down....too funny
