Thanks guys.  I read that article and calculated my MHR and it is between 188-190.  So, I'm not going to worry about it too much.  I do think I will make a dr appt when my husband gets home just to be on the safe side.  I'm one of those freaks who NEVER gets sick so I haven't been in quite some time.  Can't hurt!

Hey Jeff, thanks for stopping by.

Verna,
How do you use your Garmin? I only use it to track my speed, distance, cadence and HR. I know it has some more advanced features like training buddy and alike. Have you used any of those?

Hello everyone!  I was absent from my computer yesterday, so I'm just now catching up. I tell ya, this whole not working thing is really fun

Erica, about your HR, I wouldn't compare your MHR with anyone else's - its a completely individualized metric.  I would recommend using LT (Lactate Threshold) HR instead of a calculated MHR to determine your training zones.  There are tons of articles on this site and others instructing how to do a LT TT (Time Trial).  I checked out Joe Friel's _The Triathlete's Training Bible_ from the library and he has some really good information about HR training.

I totally did not meet my goal of swimming 4x a week! Ah! I just have no confidence in the water - I'm even scared to go to the Master's swim here and its honestly 6 blocks from my house. I just need to get over myself.

1/2 Marathon on Sunday and I'm thinking I'm going to 'train through' it.  Its definitely not an A race and I don't really want to push myself to run fast.  Running 13.1 miles will be enough of a push   Tomorrow its supposed to be 75F which is nice because it was COLD this weekend (40F high and windy!) I am planning on a long-ish ride....hope the wind isn't too terrible.

Ok, have a great tuesday!

We had a discussion about HR training in the last mentoring round I was in, too. Here are some of the links that were shared in it:

Lactate Threshold Heart-Rate Zone Testing Protocol
Being in the Zone
Calculating HR Zones (Excel file)

There are also several different articles related to HR training on the D3 site. Here's a link to their articles page:

Thanks for all the heart rate info guys. Much appreciated.

I bought new pedals and shoes for my bike today! Laughing That will make up for my poor performance, right? Maybe not BUT, it can't hurt! Now I just have to get my bike to the LBS to have them put on. I won't be able to have my bike tuned up until next week though. Cry That makes me sad since I have a brick on Saturday but what can I do? Nothing. I am anxious to see how much of a difference the pedals will make. AND how many time I will fall off trying to unclip!Embarassed Any bets people?

Erica,

Perhaps we should have a contest to see which of one of us falls the most times while learning to clip and unclip our pedals.  I started practicing in the living room last night, and will have my first outdoor adventure with the new pedals after work on Thursday.

One of my co-workers thinks he is very funny, and brought in his son's elbow and knee pads for me to wear.

Don't feel bad ladies. I'm still learning to ride a bike period. I have to battle falling off and I just have regular ol' platform bike pedals on my Hybrid. Perhaps one of these years I'll move up to a better bike and clipless pedals. LOL

I have been out on my bike once this season to try out my clipless pedals and they scared me to death. It doesn't help that a lot of the roads in my area are country roads and very rough from farm equipment traveling on them constantly. At this point, I am actually thinking about putting my other pedals back on before the tri if I don't get comfortable with my new ones. At least I have until 7/13 to practice.

I have SPD's...am currently struggling to get clipped in (as I watch TV, run my mouth and hang on to the doorway for dear life), but seem to do okay clipping out.

A couple of girls from my training group are taking me out to our riding area ( a six mile loop around an office park--not much traffic at all) for moral support tomorrow night while I do my first real ride while clipped in.

Should be fun.  It's very entertaining to me that I am actually looking forward to an experience that will probably result in me falling off of my bike.  My, how the times have changed.

I went with the Shimano M520. I just couldn't bring myself to spend any MORE money right now. So I opted to the bargin! I took them for a spin this afternoon and didn't bite the dust once. Beginners luck! Laughing I am sure I'll fall at the most embarrassing time such as this weekend with my tri class during our brick. Yup, what a good time for a fall! Embarassed I really could feel a difference in the pedals though. I am excited to get out and ride. My parents are watching the kids for me Saturday so after the brick with the tri class, I think I'll re-ride the route and see how I do. It has to be better than last week! I hope anyway. . .

I'm not sure if this will work right or not, but I put together a little table with all of our names and links to our logs. Hopefully I did it right. LOL I copying & pasting it into your log doesn't work, just let me know and I can post the HTML code here.

Well, I tried to copy and paste it again into my log to be sure it worked and none of the table or background came with it. Use this code if you want the glittery background and such.

Thanks Melissa!  I put it right up on my training log.  I love it!    What is everyone up to today?  I have a swim ahead of me today as well as some weight training.  Gotta tone those legs!  Happy training!

I'll be back at the gym today on the bike and use either a crosstrainer or elliptical for running because they are calling for rain this afternoon.

Yesterday was a beautiful day here so I decided on my way home from the gym that I was going to take my bike down to the park to work with my pedals, which are the Look Keos by the way. I was doing fine with the pedals but ended up walking around a mile home with my bike because our streets took a beating with our harsh winter and I ended up with 2 flat tires. I only had one extra tube in my bike bag so I had no choice but to walk the home because my mom was late leaving work and my wonderful younger brother did not understand why I would need a ride because I wasn't that far from home. I guess I should tell him he owes a new set of cleats because mine will now probably need to be replaced.

I am just finishing up my coffee then heading out for my long run.

I ran out of coffee this morning! Cry Not good! I NEVER run out! I am blaming Bryan, I think he took my coffee when he left. Probably not but he's not here to defend himself so it's his fault! I had to stop at Starbucks and picked up a Tall Skinny Vanilla Latte with an extra shot of expresso to make it through the morning. I also picked up a bag of Organic Sumatra. I'm pretty excited about that. I love their Sumatra but have never had the organic. My coffee MUST be strong so I have high hopes for this. Still not used to not being able to run out and pick up Kona coffee whenever I feel like it (lived in Hawaii for three years). So sad I know! Undecided Hope your run went well!

Perhaps you need this smiley, Verna.

I know a few people that could use these smilies in their signatures... Not me though. I am trying to stay away from coffee as much as I can - so I have only one cup a day (if at all).

I had a good swim earlier this morning. However, I still struggle with flatter kicks and today got special attention and help from my group's coach. I hope to improve on my kicks as it will/should make me a better, more efficient and a faster swimmer.

Anyone has special triathlon race/training plans for the weekend?

I am signed up as a volunteer for Spring Sprint Triathlon here in San Diego. I will be a swim buddy.
