Caius - Awesome website you have and noble work you are doing as well.  My family too is affected by Altzheimers - my 3 time-retired pharmacist stepfather now has the mind of a 2 year old.

Wind is my nemisis - I hate it (at least when it's in your face).

Rode last night and got punished going out. The legs are aching, you're going nowhere fast, and your mind keeps telling you that this sucks. I think the mental game is just as important as the physical part of training. I get thoughts stuck in my head that I can't do something, or that I should quit (i.e. sit up on the bike portion cause it's tough), and I reconginze that the negativity has an adverse affect on my perfomance, but I can't get rid of those little nagging parts of my brain that tell me to give up....very frustrating. I find that I'll yo yo during a workout. Work hard and suffer through the difficult parts, and then suddenly give up and coast, until I remind myself that this is not supposed to be easy, and then I'll go back and forth between the two throughout a tough workout.

This is just me ranting a bit, but I figure if anyone else has these same thoughts running through their mind that they're not strong enough to be doing something, or that it's too difficult, just remember this - you're not the only ones thinking this way. Ultimately, I think that what seperates the truly strong athlete from the middle of the pack athlete is their ability to psych themselves up - not out - during their training and racing. I need to learn how.

Good post, and very true!

The mental part is indeed something that we need to work on. It's good that that you didn't give up and kept at it. I'm sure when you finished your ride you thought, "I'm glad I was strong enough to go through that and finish my planned workout."

Next time you're out and you have a tough session, remember this workout and you were able to push through in the past therefore you will be able to push through again. The more times we do this, the more positive reinforcement we give ourselves, the easier it will be to overcome future mental hurdles.

Side note: I've read, and have noticed personally that when my mind starts to wander and I want to just give up, sometimes it's an indication of not having enough calories stored up to complete the workout. A gel or two usually does the trick and my attitude perks right up. Something to try!

I have been practicing zazen (a form of Zen meditation) for some time now and it takes care of those discouraging/distracting thoughts that come up during training.

In this form of meditation I focus on the breath.  When a thought comes in and sticks, such that I am taken away from the breath, I acknowledge it and let it go.  No matter how often they come up, no matter how long they stay before I notice and let it go, I just keep the process going.  The result is that, as time goes on, these thoughts don't stick and I keep my focus for long periods of time.

Distance sports have a meditative aspect to them and I just transfer this process over.  Instead of the breath, I focus on the road or the cadence, or whatever needs the attention.  My "I can't do it" thoughts gennerally get me before I go to workout.

*please not that this is a by-product of a long time meditative practice, and would take time to develop.

Thanks for the responses. I definetly think that works for me, I need to set short goals when I'm suffering through a workout. Stare at the road right in front of you rather than 2 km further ahead - which probably looks like 100 km ahead - but also try to think about the end product = doing well come race day (and I like the idea of thinking back to previously tough workouts).

Hi everyone,

I took my new bike for its maiden voyage outside today. I've put about 200 miles on it on the indoor trainer the last few months, but the weather was at least half way descent today, and I had the day off of work so I ventured out. It was a very interesting ride indeed! I had to battle 25mph winds for the entire ride, but thats not what made it interesting. About 3/4's of the way through I was riding along and a car passed me, had to be doing 70mph (about 113km/hr for those of you who speak metric . They swerved to the left to avoid hitting a truck that was stopped at an intersection in front of them, and just ahead of me. Well, they managed to leave the road and went airborn and careened off of a power pole and down into the ditch. The power lines were right above me and started sparking all over the place! I thought they were coming down on me for a moment. I jumped off of the bike and ran across the street to see if they were ok, dialing 911 while I was running over there. Lucky I had my cell in my jacket pocket. There was a 1 year old kid in a car seat in the back that me and another lady who lived across the street helped pull out. The driver was the kids mom. I gave the kid to the lady who was helping and then tried to get the mom out. She was in shock and not very coherent. She refused to leave the car before she could get a cigarette in her mouth! I believe she had a broken arm, but I think that was it. The child only had a minor cut on his forehead, thank God! I got her calmed down, and now by this time there were several bystanders there, all doing a great job helping everybody out. The paramedics rolled up and took over so I went back across the street to collect my bike. I happened to look down at my HRM and notice my rate was through the roof. It was saying 216! I don't think that is even possible, but I realized my heart was racing. Well, I jumped back on my bike and road home, but now that I sit to type this out I don't really remember much of the ride home. I'm just glad that the cars passengers were ok!

Whew, I hope all of my rides are not as exciting as this one was...

Wow Tim!  That is a ride you'll never forget!  And on your new bike's initial ride outdoors!

I went to my LBS today to pick up my racing uniform (they FINALLY came in).  Had to drool over the $2000 Specailized Transition.  (only drooled)  Had to sit on it... rest my arms in the aerobars....
That is a sweet bike!

Wow!!! What a story! Great job for staying calm and helping out the child and the lady. I'm very happy to hear that they were both okay, especially the baby.

If I read it correctly, it sounds like she was doing some careless driving. Wonder why she wanted to swerve around the stoped truck? Anyway, glad that no one got seriously hurt.

Oh, I can imagine how your heart must have been racing. Great job Tim!!!

Hi, Everyone!

I'm back from my vacation in Las Vegas, NV!!! I was visiting family and having some fun at the casinos. Oh I also had a one day conference. Perfect weather right now.

Training there went well there. It could have been better. I did ride up Red Rock Canyon!! It was beautiful!! We rented bikes - 2008 Cannondales Carbon (forgot the specific names). They were worth $2,500!! We also did some running.

Happy to be home but nervous about my Triathon on Sunday. I know I can do it. I am worried about the lake temp. I am borrowing a wet suit and you are right it took like 20min to get it on & off. My friend said it should be glove tight. I am going to try the cooking spray and body glide and put bags over my hands and feet to see if that helps. Some people from my area said it is do able to not where a wet suit but it definately would be more comfortable. Plus the bouancy factor. Never worn a wetsuit so I first want to try it out.

Talk you Later, Kristina
Keep training hard!!

Yesterday was a rest tday, but I'm placing myself on the DL today (possibly tomorrow) with a (semi-annual) nasty sinus infection.  12-hour (team) mtn bike race in less than 72 hours (Saturday).  Will visit the doc shortly then to bed.

Tim, that is one heck of a ride story. I thought I got freaked out in my first group ride last week when the guy beside me carshed and almost took me out - I've got nothing on you.

Caius - thanks for the geography lesson, that's pretty cool.

Kristina - good luck for the weekend. I went back and tried on 3 more wetsuits this week, and realized that after trying on 6 suits, I'm not much better at it than the first time. Just try to bring someone with you who can help get it pulled on, and if that doesn't work maybe try to find someone else getting into their suit and each of you help the other.

I'm hoping to try on a couple more suits this weekend, and if I'm still unsure I'll rent one for a weekend just to see if it's the right size and go from there.

Kinesio,  any Vegas stories to share?

I love the map, but to be compeltely accurate, I live in Amherstburg.  It's much nicer than Windsor. Laughing  Party at Tim's place.  He is pretty central.

Hey Caius nice map. Yep, looks like I'm in the middle, so party at my place

Terry - Hope your feeling better! Good Luck in your race this weekend!

Kristina - Good luck and have fun this weekend as well! Let us know how it goes.

Just did an easy run today, last workout before my 1/2 mary on saturday in Indianapolis. 35,000 runners and the course includes a lap on the speedway!

Looks like the forecast for my race is rain. I've not had to deal with that during a race yet, anyone have any advice?

Yes, thanks for the map.  It seems you are a data & map geek (like me).  In my new job I am going to be working a lot with both.  What a great time to change jobs - just before my first triathlon!

Tracy

PS - I will be bike commuting in part of the way to work tomorrow as the weather is almost decent now!

I did a week 5 work out in the 0 to 1650 swim program today.  The main set was supposed to workout to about 930 meters continuous.  I felt good though, so I extended it to 1020m.

Swimming 1k continuous was on my short term goals list, so that felt pretty good.

Thanks for the Map, to be exact I live in Idaho Falls, SE corner of the state , where we got 5 inches of snow for the first day of May !

Tim, that was quite a ride you had, I won't complain about riding in the wind  anymore if everyone stays on the road where they should be .

Good luck Kristina on you Tri , I know you will do great. Mine is in 3 weeks, and I have to rent a wetsuit too.

I plan to do another brick workout this weekend, I learned some things to do and not do last weekend, it should go better.

hope everyone has a good weekend too !

Invigilator - congrats on the swim. I'm also giving myself a congratulatory pat on the back as I also swam for 1000M continous for the first time yesterday. I did mine as a pull drill , cause I need a little help with bouyancy, but nonetheless I had a big grin on my face for the rest of the afternoon.

I'm off the DL and back among the living.  Antibiotics kicked in this afternoon and I got a light core workout in after getting up from a 1.5 hour nap.  I should be okay to race tomorrow.

Good luck to everyone this weekend, I believe we have a tri and a half mary!

Just wondering what everyone's views were for shaving down before a race? Does it help with the other sports or just the swimming???
