jrcody - 2008-12-08 6:13 AM Here is a stupid question for the group --- which bike should I use? I have 3 (road, full suspension MTB, and a hybrid road with MTB tires and road gearing). Thanx from the WF Newbie.

If you are in M40-44, ride the heavy Mountain Bike, you will thank me later    Oh, and don't bother training hills for the bike or run.  They say it's a hilly course, but that's just to scare you

Thanx, but I am in the next age group up I'll be 47 per the USAT rules. does the advice still go?

I don't know anyone in that ag, so go ahead and ride the fast bike

Thanks a lot, Chris... :P

1.  You'll miss the naked co-ed run Saturday night

2.  You'll have about a 40 minute drive into the park, plus extra for parking.  If it's all about the $, check what the day entrance fees are, might end up paying close to the camping pass costs.

3.  If you're not into camping, you'll probably get a better night's sleep

Turns out you get free parking for the car and everyone in it if you are in the race. So I think I am going to stay in the hotel. (what can I say, I am a sucker for a good nights sleep)

I am going to do the Redding Marathon this weekend and the American River 50 in April as a lead up to WF. Where are you going to stay?

The tri clubs by you are Tribe and Silicon Valley Tri Cub. They should have a bunch of people training for Cal & Wildflower.

We need to give this thread some love

I train on Mavic Aksiums and have HED3 race wheels.  They are basically the same weight, the race wheels just give me that "bike looks cool' factor.  OK, a little more aero.  Not exactly light climbing wheels.

I did Pumpkinman (pretty hilly) half on them

For WF - HEDs or leave the Mavics on?

I dont think the Mavic Askiums offer any edge, they flex allot, parachute spokes, not that lite. Good beat up training wheels. If they weigh the same I would go with the HED, they have to be stiffer, will give an advantage on the flats and downhills. If your in the 40-44 AG go with the Mavics .

Aksiums it is then    Points on the HEDs make sense, not just weight.

Hill training on the bike starts tomorrow!

Hi Chris.  Glad to see you're doing WF.  Hope we can meet!

I say HEDs as well.  I used my trispokes 2 years ago at WF.  I'll probably go 404/808 this year.  That downhill after Nasty Grade is pretty scary with the wind blustering although I'm a lightweight so the wind always blows me around.

I'm looking forward to this race as it will be my first time there.  Me and 2 other buddies are driving up from Carlsbad with my toy hauler.  I believe it's going to be a long drive there and back so that might be part of my endurance training.  ;-

I'm interested to what the camping is like there.  My trailer is a 23' and I was wondering what the camp spots are like?  I'm hoping for at least water and sewage.  I paid for it so hopefully I actually get it.

What did you pay for, camping or hookups?  I've only camped, but from all I know, if you don't show up by Wed or so I wouldn't count on any hookups.

As far as camping, it's more like squatting.  Find a place to park/pitch your tent, that's your site.  It's not assigned or designated camp spots or anything like that.

Actually was curious whether you could reserve hookups, didn't think you could, I was right.  From the website (emphasis theirs):

*Regular campsite are always available all pre-paid camping locations are on a first come - first serve basis (tents and RV's). Campsites with full hookups for RVs typically fill up by Tuesday afternoon. Pre-Paid camping does not reserve you a RV or hook-up site.

I am so mad I broke my wheel on a hill ride. I cracked the rim. I was riding Down Sepulveda Blvd. into Santa Monica. I was going 46mph I had and SUV next to me and a really big pothole in front of me. If I was going slower I would have made some money and fought with the SUV but at 46 MPH I didn't want to come home in a white bag, or worse break something and not be able to race so I hit the pot hole and cracked the rim now I can't do hills until I get the $ to fix the rim (GRRRRRR!!!!!) hope this doesn't put me to far behind!
