Happychick - 2008-12-21 3:06 AM I'm already signed up in another mentor group but saw a few buds in here (Erica and David) and decided to be a lurker if ya'll don't mind?!

You used the word "ya'll" and anyone that has that as part of their typing vocabulary is welcome and approved to lurk (I use said word all the time!).

wkirbytri - 2008-12-20 10:56 PM 1. Do you have a training plan? If so, are you comfortable with it? Does it make sense to you? Is it too much, is it too little? I have imported one of the beginning sprint training plans from BT and will start it next week when I return home from Christmas vacation. I did bring my bike and trainer with me so will attempt to get some sort of a workout in and not eat all week. 2. Equipment. What are your questions on what you need to race? Depending upon length of race and desired goal for the race, as well as how deep your wallet and desire to purchase gear is, will determine what you actually NEED. You do not need a tri-bike with race wheels, aero helmet, carbon bike shoes, and a $600 wetsuit to race...but there are some basic necessities and they do differ depending upon some factors. Bike: Trek 7.2fx hybrid with road tires. Originally bought this bike to commute to work. I have never been on a road bike before, but have been eyeing them quite a bit this past year after riding upright for so long and no place to move my hands. I'm not worried about riding my current bike in a sprint, but will I be able to get away with this bike in an Olympic tri? I really just want to finish a tri before I start getting over my head in goals. Most posts I've seen from people that are attempting their first triathlon seem to note they don't want to finish last. This was my thought too, but maybe I should TRY to come in last on my first race so no one else will be disappointed :-) I was ready to participate in my first sprint last fall, but a re-scheduled volleyball game for my daughter (I was coaching) changed that plan and then a minor injury put the rest of the year out. -Wes

You won't finish last.....believe me when you see the people that turn out for a sprint!!

x2!  In my first tri, my rear derailleur broke on mile 11 or 12 of a 14 mile bike course.  There was no way I was going to DNF my first tri so I ran my bike in the last 2-3 miles.  In my bike shoes.  In 90 degree weather.  No water.  It sucked.  Then I ran the 3 mile run.  It was awful but I finished and was not last.  Close but not DFL.  No worries, train smart and you will be fine!

Yeah, I kind of have a black cloud that follows me and strange things happen to me a lot!  It was an experience that is for sure!  It made my second tri a lot easier!

I think we need a group table for our logs.  What's everyone else think?  I'm not the best at whipping them up so if someone else wants to do it I'm good with that.  If not, I'll try to get something fun whipped up!

I agree...but I have no clue how to do it!! I just made links in my log, but if someone can figure out a table with links to the other logs, that'd be awesome!

BT celebrity!!

What does everyone think of this? (I just can't say y'all, sorry)  There is a fundraiser here for a memorial fund for a deputy's son that died of a rare heart condition when he was eleven. It is a series of boxing matches involving public safety personnel. My agency has never participated, but a dude just threw down the gauntlet to the whole dept looking for a challenger. I have never done any formal boxing (have done ju-jitsu), but if Mrs. Gator will let me, I might be in. How does that sound???

Kirk

I would say as long as the proper safety equipment is used and everyone realizes that this is for charity first and foremost(not a guy from another agency with an axe to grind), give it a shot.  Keep your guard up.

I was looking for a way to use my first triathlon as a charity fund raiser.  I was thinking of starting a pool where participants could guess my finishing time.  The winning person would receive a portion of whats collected, or maybe I could get a local buisness to donate a nice gift.  I would donate whatever was collected to a fund for an officer that was killed in a car accident on his way to work on 31 Dec 2007.

BTW, I was talking about doing a sprint triathlon to one of my co-workers today.  He said that he would be willing to do it with me andsparked the interest of his wife and at least 2 other people he knows!  The pressure on me has just went up a notch or two.

That is great to have that support at work! I did my first sprint with a buddy from work. He was way faster than me but totally supportive.  Here is another fundraising event that I do every May. http://www.rideformissingchildren.org/rochester/

Ah, that's right, you work at this time of the night!! It's Christmastime, slacking is okay.   On charities, I'm going to be doing my Ironman for the Wounded Warrior Project---supports programs that help troops who have been wounded in combat.  So, it is near and dear to my heart. I think racing for charities is great because it puts more purpose and motivation into it and involves others and exposes the sport--for a good reason--to a larger populace.

Evening Everyone!
I hope everyone is having a wonderful Christmas week.  It's a fairly light training week for me, and I don't mind at all.  I love training, racing, etc., but with as little time as I get with my family, my priority is definitely there this week and so it's all taking a back seat for me.  Things will get serious next week I'm sure as I get ready to tackle 2009 and the different challenges it is sure to bring.  BUT, until then, I pray you each enjoy your time with friends and family.
May your tables be blessed and your hearts be warmed!!

Happy Christmas Eve everyone!  I am supposed to run today but it is cold and raining.  I know, who cares and I usually enjoy running in the rain.  But, it's Christmas Eve and I have a lot to do.  In fact I have to leave in a few hours to take the kids to church, they are all in a Christmas play before mass tonight.  If I remember to bring my camera, I'll post some pic's of the kiddos.  Hope you all have a great Christmas eve and great Christmas day!!!

Merry Christmas Eve everyone.  Still snowing in Seattle.  Can you say cabin fever? This is going on seven days now.  The city is shut down once again because it refuses to salt the streets. And my body is starting to ache from lack of physical activity (I never thought that could happen!).  So I'll be out doing another long walk in the snow today just to get some air and a bit of blood flowing through the veins.

Enjoy your week!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS guys!  I've had a great day so far.  The kids were the best this morning.  All taking turns, thanking everyone.  Very relaxing.  Unusual for my crew.  I'm loving it!  I plan to take off and run here soon.  I have a few new toys to try out.  Bryan got me new socks, running shirt, jacket, head lamp......too warm for the jacket today but I know I'll get a lot of use out of it!

Wishing everyone a blessed day!
