Beautiful bike pictures. I had my first outdoor bikeride Saturday, by mile 20, my rearend was happy that this was a 25mi ride. I'm tapering for this coming weekend's half marathon. I cannot wait to complete it so I can go back to a more balanced swim/bike/run routine and launch this year's tri season. At least I shouldn't fear the 10K for my one oly after getting through the half marathon.

Congrats Melanie on your du!  Great job!

I also got out for a bike ride yesterday.  The weather man was wrong as usual but this time in my favor as it was a beautiful day!  Went 22 miles which is my longest ride this year.

Today was another story.  Plan was for a short swim and a short run at lunch but one meeting ran over so I only had time for the swim before the next meeting.  Felt good since I didn't get to swim at all last week.  Tomorrow morning's masters swim will be better.

May try and sneak my run in on the treadmill after the kids go to bed tonight.

I swam this morning and was planning a run at lunch, but work got in the way.  I had to prep for an afternoon meeting with my boss - not one that I could blow off.  Hopefully I'll be able to get outside at some point tomorrow for a run.  The weather is not supposed to cooperate...we'll see...it's been a while since I ran in the rain!

Yes, I am also trying to get back to the 5am workouts. Tomorrow will be the 3rd or 6th week in a row that I am trying to get up.  We'll see what happens.  Although the sun is rising sooner (and I have a skylight in my bedroom encouraging me to wake up), you would think it would be easier.  But guess what....they are calling for snow tonight.  I love Chicago!!!!

My body feels pretty racked up from increasing the mileage (in a 3 sports) these past 2 weeks.  Especially because I am learning how to properly swim (using 4 paddles) and doing sprint workouts running.  This week I am trying to start doing some interval work on the bike/trainer probably/ so that I am ready for the hilliest sprint in the midwest on May 16!  I am scared.  Let's just see if I remember that at 5am.

Hey---Heart rate discussion anyone?  I seem to average 157-162 running during competitions.  Does that mean it should be my max?  (I know, tammy, I need to do the threshold test). Maybe next week.  (But check out my log from last THursday track practice when I did the mile repeats.  Shouldn't that be a good indicator?)  Ok...crazy girl is singing off and hopefully hitting the pillow for that 5am wakeup....

So I got a nineteen pipeline wetsuit today. WOHOO!!!

The place was selling the suit for $300 but if you were part of a team they gave it to you for $260. I mentioned to the salesperson that another store was going ot be selling the same suit for $320. She was a b it shocked since Nineteen was advertising it for $300. She then goes on the nineteen website and sees they upped the price to $320. Now she says that she has to raise her price.

So basically I am probably the last one buying the pipeline for 260 at her store.

Good morning everyone-hit a milestone today.  My first 3000+ swim workout.  Had Masters swim at 5:30am.  Mix of pull work and varying levels of effort with freestyle.  When I started 7 weeks ago I had a hard time finishing a 50.  Still a long way to go to get more efficient and faster but feel like I am getting a solid base. Total Immersion clinic a week from Saturday-hopefully that will help.

Heart rate monitor-I have been using one recently for running and biking.   Never used one before when I was just running and in looking back I probably overtrained alot. Using one now primarily to keep from trying to push every workout harder than the last. Want to avoid overtraining/injury! Really helps keep me in check on long slow run and easy days.  There are several good articles on calculating heart rate on this site.  I have not had a real test done to establish max heart rate for run and bike but feel like I have a pretty good idea after lots of reading and workouts.

I probably should use a HRM as I have a hard time not pushing it on slow days.  But I really can't stand the chest strap.  I've tried to use it on my bike in the past and just couldn't get used to it....

Adam - good work on a PR

I am going for a swim tonight. I haven't swam in almost two weeks. Way too long since I have been in the water. Not sure what type of workout I'll do yet.

Atleast I get to try out my new googgles. I was saying last summer that I needed new goggles. I finally got a new pair 2 weeks ago.

Lynn - is the 157-162 avg during a 5k race where you are going all out? What was your max at this distance/effort?

My "aerobic" zone is quite small....154-156...my max is much higher...during my last running test an 8:20 mile my max was 169.

Nice job on the swim Adam!

I use wear a HRM for most of runs/rides.  I have never tested for my zones, I just like to get a general feel for my RPE vs. heart rate.  Some day I might convince myself to do the LT test and then I can see where I have been training all of this time!

I wear the SealXp...mask style. I feel safer during a race if someone karate chops my face

Tamio - 2009-04-21 7:27 PM Lynn - is the 157-162 avg during a 5k race where you are going all out? What was your max at this distance/effort? My "aerobic" zone is quite small....154-156...my max is much higher...during my last running test an 8:20 mile my max was 169.

Good question. I actually can not remember the last 5k I did!  But the 157-162 average are during half marathons....either stand alone or else in a half ironman.   I checked for the mile repeats last week....my may HR was 185 and 190 vs ave of 172ish (I think).  So I would say I was going all out during those repeats.  (The first lap was fast, the second was fast and I had to push, the third I was struggling, and the fourth I was really pushing it hard trying to maintain 2 to 2-05 per lap pace.)

So basically, what you are saying is, is that I should be doing workouts in the 154-156 range, but when I do intervals, I need to push it into the max range for a bit.  When I do long slow runs, I need to keep it below 154. Right?  I know...I should pick up the HR book this weekend and figure it out. (I think I have a link to a spreadsheet too.)

But thanks again for your thoughts.  I really appreciate it.....oh, and someone asked earlier on the thread..no you do not have to work out via HR (Chrissie Wellington does not). Just some of us are data freaks and it keeps our mindds busy

All,
Sorry for my lack of participation.   I took a few days off from work to get my life back in order.  I don't have a computer at home, so unless I get to a library-I'm out of contact with the 'real' world.  I hope everyone is well and I'm really excited about the amount of communication the group shares.  I'll be back on Tues. and you'll be tired of me by Friday.  Good Luck to everyone.  I look forward to meeting you all.   jeff
