Just read a few RR's and now am getting a more nervous about the ice cold water swim!  guess i'll be doing some aquatic park swims in february to acclimate.

btw, Vineman 70.3 registration just opened yesterday...

This past year i was scared about the cold water swim too. However, it was 45 and a little windy at 0445 when transition opened and standing around until the race start was almost down right cold to me. When we hit the water it was actually kind of nice. I was never cold during any part of the swim. I also pee'd in my wetsuit before moving over to tread water at the race start.

ETA
Just saw you are from the bay area so you will be used to the temps.

I was worried about the cold this past year, too, but honestly it was never a factor during the swim.  I did feel a bit chilly standing around in bare feet during staging and the first few miles of the bike were definitely not warm (I was fine by the time I climbed the first hill on base).  Bring some throwaway socks (and perhaps arm warmers?) and you should be fine.  I did wear my neoprene hoodie, but I really don't think I needed it.  Now if the water temp is < 55°, that could be a different story...

If I am not mistaken, I think we're next.

Was supposed to be on the 20 week plan but my tendonitis has other plans... trying to get fully healed (again) before kicking up the running.

They had the pool closed last week for cleaning and it feels like i lost all my swim skillz. I feel like i am just windmilling away and sinking in the water.

Ankle tendon injury. But I think I'll take the opportunity to ride the course and just do it as an aquabike and then cheer you guys on for the run

in 09 it was cold in the morning but once you put your wetsuit on it's all good, as you will be insulated like a seal.  just wear some socks that you can toss once you get ready to hop in.  For me, I was in the M30-34 AG which was the last wave and I believe a full 1hr30min (maybe longer) before we got in the water.  At that point the sun was out and it was not that cold.  You won't even need the extra neoprene hoodie for the water.  If you start late prepare yourself to be looking directly in the sun on the way back.  Sighting is very difficult...I recommend just look to your side and follow the pier...you won't get lost.

Carlsbad Marathon this weekend...Good luck to all of the runners racing either the half or the full!  Having the marathon on the schedule kept me (kinda) honest through the holidays so the run fitness is there.  Hopefully, I won't get beaten up too badly on Sunday.

Been loving the Tri Club Saturday rides from Del Mar up to the Oceanside Harbor (transition area) and back. ~38 mi. at 20-22 mph on the road bike is good prep for the race!  After Cbad, we'll start adding some out & back stretches through Pendleton to bump up the mileage and preview a section of the course.  If you're in the San Diego area, come join us Saturday mornings at 8:00 A.M.!

Been keeping up with the CompuTrainer / spin as well.  Hopefully, they'll come out with the real course videos of the Oceanside course soon, but my guess is that it won't be released in time for the race.  Hope I'm wrong.  They do have the course on the packaged software, so you can ride the course, but you select the scenery from one of the packaged backgrounds.  It's not the same as one of the IRCVs.

Now if I could just get back in the water more than 1 or 2 times per week, I think I'd be ready.  Plenty of time for that though.  The water temp in the Cove is not all that enticing right now.

How's everyone else doing?

As far as I've heard it will remain the same. Guess I ought to go down there and practice on the sand some.

my brother withdrew from the race. it was the smart thing to do for him. He thought since i had done this last year he could do it too with no training. I am glad he wised up before dying on the course.

I on the other hand am sick with some stupid cold or flu. I wish it would run its course so i could get back to training.

The sand wasn't bad last year it was right before the 1st aid station so it just made for alonger walk break.

Hey Guys,

I'm new to the thread and the CA 70.3 will be my first HIM. I have a sleeveless full-length wetsuit and I'm in the men's 30-34 bracket.

Will I be OK after I start the swim and get warmed up or should I suck it up and buy another full length, fully-sleeved wetsuit?

Thanks,

Josh

Hey guys, I was just wondering how I could get somewhat of an accurate depiction of the hills on the bike ride via training. I often ride from Huntington Beach to Dana Point, then back. And I believe the overall climb is about 2500 feet. would this be an accurate depiction of what it would be like?...thanks again guys and happy training...
