For the race I would suggest taking bottle hand up's (I think they do them) instead of schlepping all the water and extra weight on the bike. How does that work? I have run a half mary so I know how those aid stations work. How frequently do they have water available during the bike portion of an HIM? Oh, and how does it work? I know during a run it's easy to grab half a cup of ice water every 3 miles or so but during the bike it takes a lot more water if it is hot. |

Veteran 135 columbia, md | Subject: RE: Savageman HIM : Official Thread This course will have three stops. It's fairly easy but you may want to practice with someone first. You ride up, slow down and then grab a bottle they give you. I usually start with my own bottle (a old one) and then discard that just before the stop. Then pick up a new one, place it in my bottle rack and pick up a bottle of water and douse myself with it. The drinks are usually a little cooler then anything you take with you that's baking in the sun. Check out the website and they show you the where the stops are. Hope that helps |

The same day I inquired about that, there was a thread about bottle exchanges in the tri-talk forum. I am guessing I will lose a little weight over the next two months but I'll still be just over 200lbs going into this. I am a heavy sweater so I am more concerned about hydration than anything. I have run a half mary so I know that those quick aid stations are sufficient to hold me over. For the bike, I was contemplating towing a wagon with the water cooler from work to be safe.

Veteran 135 columbia, md | Subject: RE: Savageman HIM : Official Thread Prerode the course. It is SAVAGE, not only hard but roads in bad condition, gravel etc, you have to be super alert. Got chased by dogs..... Wall was not that hard, it's what comes afterwards.... a lot of pain LOL |

118 | Subject: RE: Savageman HIM : Official Thread There are two stretches now that are rough, but both should be good by race day. The freshly chip-sealed gravel on Spring Lick will be smooth and broken in and good road by race weekend. The next few weeks will be dodgy though as, like most roads on the course, that road gets little traffic so will take some time for cars to grind the gravel into the tar. The torn up stretch on Big Savage descent from the rough winter will be repaved this summer. Are there any other bad roads to report or just those two spots? The roads always have been pristine on raceday and will be again this year. Except for the Wall. I hope that will only deteriorate more. Where did you get chased by dogs? Dogs as in plural? It's rural country so I make no promises that there are no territorial dogs, but I've ridden the course many dozens of times and never encountered a loose dog and have had no reports this year of dogs. Let me know where these dogs are and I'll have it investigated. Thanks. Edited by knyost 2010-06-28 8:56 PM |

Thanks about the road info, I figured that Spring Lick would change, we had a road like that around Ellicott City that took some time to sort itself out. Otherwise the roads were fine and the course is AMAZING.
Fourth: 2 dogs, tiny compared to the previous two, Westenrport & Aarons Run, house on the right just before the corner. Their effort was poor and they stayed on their property. I only mention this one because be we were edge when we heard the barking.
Kyle thanks you for your interest in this, it really shows that this is a great event with great staff. I am impressed. Can’t wait till race day.

Lance Armstrong says he wants to do triathlons next year. He is looking for races with tough bike segments. Where could he find one of those? |

118 | Subject: RE: Savageman HIM : Official Thread All right, so I've ridden both SavageMan courses this weekend. Skazi is right. There are stretches of road in bad conditions, and I encountered the rottweiler and the mutt as well. Spring Lick descent is still fresh chip-seal and not pleasant riding. No doubt by race day it will be fine, but it is breaking in slowly, surely because it sees very little traffic. The torn up road on Westernport Rd is dangerous because you don't see it coming and it's on a descent. I snuck by on the left side of the road with no problem, but it certainly is not in racing condition. It's going to have to be patched by race weekend. The rottweiler and mutt are a problem. The mutt blocked my way and the fat rottweiler then was able to catch up. He sounded vicious, but did no harm. Nonetheless, he is quite intimidating. We'll see what we can do about getting those dogs tethered. Now, for the good news. The 30.0 bike course is a thing of beauty. Beautiful, smooth roads. Beautiful scenery. Beautiful descents. Beautiful lack of any traffic whatsoever. Nice, steady climbs (hard to call them beautiful.....). If you are out to ride the SavageMan course, make sure to get in a ride of the 30.0 course as well. It is really a phenomenal ride. And, yes, I know a triathlon course with a tough bike segment. If anyone knows how to get Lance's ear, we'd take him. All - and I mean all - SavageMan money goes to melanoma foundation. |

Champion 5376 PA | Subject: RE: Savageman HIM : Official Thread I feel so far behind still. I just got my first 50 mile ride this weekend. (51.77 with 4k yds of climbing) I need to get down to ride the course but it sounds like twice in August wouldn't be too bad since the roads are yet to be optimal. Breen, I'll put this much in writing; I will finish the same day I start. |

118 | Subject: RE: Savageman HIM : Official Thread Ah, this reminds me of my 5K PR, a -0:30 overall time at the Dewey Beach Pump 'n Run. They had a bench press set up at the start line, and for every rep of your body weight you could do, it took one minute off your 5K time. I won with a negative overall time and took home a very Dewey Beach appropriate gold bracelet!! Ah, the good old days. |

IM CDA was my first full and by far the hardest thing I have ever done, but something tells me SavageMan is going to come very, very close Recently finished IM-CDA also and having done SM in 2008 I can honestly say that I felt way more trashed after SM than I did after IM-??CDA. ?Lo??oking for?ward to this year's race? as I have a score to settle with the course????. Hoping my form for the hills is ?b?etter than what it was two years ago.?? |

I am new to tri's but live in Deep Creek and was wondering if I could ride my hybrid in the Oly distance. Looking at the photos I am only seeing TT's and road bikes but just curious from those of you that have raced it if anyone is on hybrids? Thanks in advance. |
