New user 30 | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks Group - Closed well day 2 walked again and did another lap the last lap was not all that fast, but at least I stuck it out and increased by one. My laps are 0.36 of a mile and I did 3 yesterday and today. Monday I am going to call the pool in town and see about swimming there. I am going to go back to the rehab at the hospital where I work and do the tread mill and maybe a bike for a while. Really getting into this. Thanks |

Veteran 329 | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks Group - Closed Bob,I have yet to do any OWS. And living in Alaska makes impossible now and very limited in the summer. With that said, are there any drills I can do in the pool to replicate open water swimming? |

I can't sit still for this long. wish me luck! Thanks for the laugh, LOL!! So how was the movie - did you make it through? It was almost as hard as my first HM. I was squirming like the 6yr old girl in front of me. It was a pretty decent movie and I've filled my movie quota for the next 6 months. |

Veteran 209 New York | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks Group - Closed rstocks3 - 2010-01-03 8:22 AM Speaking of swimming. Anyone have any swim questions? Flipturns, OWS sighting, OWS start? Anything? any tips on how to get me bilateral breathing? I've been using some drills/technique workouts from http://www.swimsmooth.com/ (great site by the way) and purchased http://www.triswimcoach.com/ to help me along. I can go for 100M and then my breathing starts getting out of whack. Also not sure if my form is staying intact. Lately, I've been doing a lot of one arm drills to work on my balance and turning my body and also using a pull buoy with bilateral breathing to take out the kicking various. |

There is really no reason to learn bilateral breathing Tuffli. If you are comfortable breathing every stroke, bilateral breathing will only put you in oxygen debt. It would be like holding your breath for another stride when you are running. I breathe every stroke to my left and have for 40 years. The fastest swimmers in the world breathe every stroke (for any distance over 100 m). It is important to know how to take a breath on your weak side in case conditions warrant that. For that it's just practice. 1 length to your left, 1 length to your right. |

Bob 2194 Binghamton, NY | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks Group - Closed Time to get into the swing of things. Back to work tomorrow. Organization is the key to getting the workouts in. If you can't get the planned workout in, improvise! I used to think that a ride wasn't doing me much good unless I got a good couple hours or more in. Turn up the intensity and do some intervals if you need to shorten a workout. I hope everyone had a great weekend! |

Extreme Veteran 330 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks Group - Closed rstocks3 - 2010-01-02 6:22 PM What kind of workouts are you doing in the pool Renee? Let's see if we can't figure out how to make you faster. Generally it comes down to swimming more with faster people. Don't focus too much on drills, that's a common mistake in triathletes. (IMHO) Speaking of swimming. Anyone have any swim questions? Flipturns, OWS sighting, OWS start? Anything? Well, you'll be happy to hear I'm not doing drills. Honestly, I haven't put much thought into my swims, knowing I planned to join masters this month. Mainly I've done continuous swims of 1200 or 2000. I guess masters will be good for swimming with faster people - I usually have the pool to myself! I'm WAY intimidated to go tomorrow, but I am hoping it will help!! I'm sure I'll have more questions for you after that! Swim questions - I bet I'll be the only one tomorrow that doesn't flip turn - ugh! Any advice on learning? I've tried different times, but always get so much water up my nose I end up giving up on it again. Thanks for your thoughts on the TM and on bi-lateral breathing - I was happy to hear you didn't think it necessary. I also find it interesting you breathe every stroke. That would be my preference, but I figured it would slow me down - obviously not the case for you I'll bet you did get some looks going 3.5 hours on the TM - WOW!!! I'm impressed at the sheer mental strength! With -15 temps here I'm staying indoors for a bit longer. I can't believe I'm wishing for 20, LOL! TTYL! |

Veteran 209 New York | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks Group - Closed rstocks3 - 2010-01-03 7:45 PM Thanks for the feedback, Bob. I always had the impression that bilateral breathing would get me faster, but it always got me winded. Still, I'm pretty weak on my left side, so focusing on that will be key. I'm happy to know that you can still be fast in the water breathing every stroke.tpnguyen10 - 2010-01-02 10:27 PM rstocks3 - 2010-01-03 8:22 AM Speaking of swimming. Anyone have any swim questions? Extreme Veteran 330 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks Group - Closed Hey all! I just wanted to come say - I did it! I went to masters swim - did I mention I was intimidated to go? Almost missed it - woke up WAY late - 4:45 and needed to be out the door by 5 - YIKES! It was intimidating walking in and getting the lay of the land, but I was mostly at ease once I got in the pool. Thank goodness I am fast enough (barely) to keep up with the slowest lane, LOL. Now to figure out how to move up a lane Actually, by the end of practice I was catching the people in front of me and having to slow down - so if nothing else (at this speed) my endurance is good! I just need to figure out how to go faster without being totally out of breath! The coach isn't there this week, but others assured me he does help out with stroke improvement ideas, etc. The person who filled in for him today said my stroke looks good but that I need to lengthen it and that the coach would be able to help with that when he got back. I am surprised to have really liked the atmosphere!! It was cool to see so many swimming at once - around 30 I bet. I only had to share with 3 others - I hear one of the faster lanes had 10! How scary!! The hour flew by this AM Dare I say I enjoyed my swim? Wow! Looks like I'm signing up - I'll be back in the AM (unless they cancel for weather - grr!) Gotta run - just wanted to share Happy Training! |

Bob 2194 Binghamton, NY | Subject: RE: Bob Stocks Group - Closed I've been posting in a thread about stroke count and wanted to touch on that as a swim topic. There is a simple concept when it comes to swimming. Distance per stroke = SPEED! The more distance you cover per stroke at a constant effort the faster you will swim. Say you are swimming at a 50% effort (easy swim) and it takes you 20 strokes to cover 25 yds in 30 seconds. At that same effort, if you can cover 25 yds in 10 strokes your time will decrease by close to 50%. This is an extreme but it is a good example of how decreasing your stroke count will increase your speed. |
