The stairmaster is no joke! No matter how great shape I am in, that still blasts my HR through the roof. To answer Tim's post: I ran 4 miles this morning and did some light lifting. Had intended on running 8 miles, but I was feeling really nauceous so I cut it short. I'll join Tim on the trainer tonight as well. Tomorrow I will bang out that 8-mile run in the AM. |

I sort of adjusted down in size one of the workouts your posted above, Tim. It was the first time I've ever done anything structured on the trainer, and it really helped the time go by faster, plus I felt like I was really accomplishing something. Thanks! |

I've noticed the same thing. If I don't do a specific workout, I can't get motivated enough and then I don't push myself. Having standard go-to sets that you can incorporate into the trainer ride really helps. Once the weather gets nice (and you are more comfortable riding outside, Atlantia), you can do the same sort of structured rides on the trail. Rides fly by! |

I was just about to lock into a deal with a Saris Bones 2 until I read some of the reviews- not very flattering. This is a tough call. I started with the Saris Bones (the 3 bike version) and although I didn't have any major issues with it, any truck rack is a pain with putting it on/off, dealing with the straps, etc. Also sometimes tri bikes, with their larger tubes, don't fit perfectly. If money is a factor, a trunk rack is really the only semi-cheap option. I now have the Thule roof rack and couldn't imagine life without it. I have the fork mount and purchased the trays that have the cutouts for MTB disc breaks. I don't have a MTB with disc breaks but someday I am sure I will. Only negative IMO with a roof rack is parking garages...and don't ask me how I know ![]() I've never owned a rear hitch rack but have thrown my bike on my friends....two negatives...on some versions multiple bikes may bang up against each other...so you need bungies, rope, etc. to keep things in place...normal parking (esp parallel) can be a pain, although this is generally not that big a deal unless you have a SUV or long car. If your car doesn't already have a hitch, then you'll likely spend just as much this way as the roof rack. If you have the $$$, or you have a bday coming up and you can convince your parents, I personally would get a roof rack. If you keep an eye out, you can catch them on sale at REI and other places online. If you want my Saris three bones rack, I'll give it to you....you can just pay shipping...I just need to double check to be sure my brother and sister don't want it first. LMK. -Tim |

Wow, what a difference! Bike 20 minutes warm-up (approx 90rpm) 1 minute sprints x 10 (approx 110 rpm) 1 minute single leg drill, 1 minute both legs, 1 minute opposite leg x 10 15 minutes grind (hill climb) 15 minutes cool down (approx 90 rpm) Run (1 degree incline) 20 minutes warm up (Speed 6) 1 minute sprints (Catch up speed 7, sprint speed 8) x 10 10 minutes (Speed 6) 10 minutes (Incline 8, speed 5) 20 minutes cool down (Speed 6) Swim 500 yard warm-up 100 yard acceleration (start slow then accelerate each successive length) x 4 100 yard deceleration (opposite of above) x 4 25 yard underwater swim x 4 25 yard single arm drill x 8 50 yards flutter kick 50 yards whip kick 100 yard hip rotation drill 100 yard shark fin drill 100 yard finger drag drill 100 yard paddles 100 yard pull buoy 100 yard cool down 50 yard upside down flutter Anybody have other plans they care to share? |

SWIM Trying to go 2x/week...2000-2500m each. I usually rotate b/t three types of workouts: one with short repeats (eg, 10x100 on 1:40), one with mid distance repeats (eg, 5x300 on 5:00) or long repeats (2x1000, 1' rest). With wu and cd, its somethign like: wu: 1x500 2x50 kickboard 4x50 desc (each one is faster) main: short, mid or long repeats cd: 200 free/back BIKE Again trying to ride 2x/week. Almost exclusively on the trainer. Workouts range from 50m to 1h15m. Mostly harder z4/L4 intervals as noted in a previous post RUN Running 5x per week in prep for a March marathon. 2 shorter/easier runs. 2 medium runs, 1 of which is tempo. 1 longer run that starts easy and end at marathon pace. I agree, that planning the workouts help...both in terms of getting through an individual workout as well as load balancing day-to-day, and week-to-week to assure you get the most out of each workout. -Tim |

I used your suggestions as a jumping off point, Tim, and I write a new workout each time. I'm still doing volume building, so some of the workouts are short. Still, having a finite goal makes it so much easier to get on the trainer in the morning. |

Member ![]() | ![]() I just finished reading "Transformed by Triathlon - The Making of an Improbable Athlete" by Jane Booth. Fun, easy, and very motivating. Now I'm reading Racing Weight and the Athlete's Plate. I've been fortunate, the weather has been great in Southern California, it was in the 80 yesterday and today. I'm hoping the Pasadena Marathon will be a beautiful day. This Thursday is my Tri 101 class at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center, it was post posted from last week because of the BCS at the Rose Bowl. At the end of the month I'm going to check out the Tri Convention in San Diego, I've never been to one, so it will be a fun first. I hope everyone is doing well. Which triathlons, runs or rides are you all training for? |

Are you getting mine? There are two ways to see someone's workouts. (1) Click on the user's name, and then click on the "Logs" button. (2) The preferred way, is to add everyone to your Friends list by using the plus sign in the header of that section. That way you can easily jump from your logs to someone elses. It works really well if everyone has everyone in their log. That way you can jump Carol's to Aileens, to Laura's etc.... |

If so, and once weather improves slightly, would anyone be interested in getting together for a small group run or bike? I’m training for the Smithfield Sprint, Kinetic Sprint, Nation’s Triathlon and a few other events this year to include toying with the National Marathon. (Ran the National Half last year and had a ball!) |

My big spring race is the Bolder Boulder (Memorial Day). I've run it every year since 1986 (except for three years when I was out of the country). It's crazy and crowded, but always a lot of fun! I'm hoping to do a triathlon sometime in July. My wife has her 20 year High School reunion, so I have to wait so I don't double book myself! My big training challenge for triathlons right now is finding a swimming pool I can use. Until I find one I'm going to work on the cycling, running and some strength training. |
