No training today, swapping days offs, usually Thursday.  I did alot of speed intervals on my runs and my legs feel like a tightened rubber band.

Tommorow I'll go 36 miles on the bike, and a 2k swim.

Early swim for me today, on the road for work.  I did get in just under an hour before the pool  closed.  Tomorrow I am looking forward to a longer run.  Should be fun as I am at my old stomping grounds, MSU.  I can't believe it has been almost 20 years since graduating.

PennState - 2010-04-07 8:33 PM Dylan, great day of training yesterday!

thanks! I am already liking this mentor program haha. It seems that people here will appreciate hearing about a good workout rather than the two typical responses i get:

1) wow you ran x mile yesterday..thats amazing (whether its 3 miles or 20 miles)
2) Dylan...i get it...you work out a lot

Todays training was an off day!!! I have slowely learned to like these days. It helps make me push even harder during the week knowing i have a day off to try and recover..rather than my old mantra of a day off is a day wasted.

furiousferret: what kind of time were you looking for in IMSG seeing as your swim times were around 2:05/100? My swim time is around 1:55-1:58/100Y...and im trying to get a gauge of what my swim time will be like at IMLP...and where to start.

Fred: How much of an effect does the mass start have on slowing an indivduals swim time? I see the videos of LP starts (and get so excited) but wonder how much time i can expect to drop because of that.

I'm looking at 1:28 if I can keep a 2:05 pace, but I'm guessing my range will be between 1:28 to 1:45.   I just want to get out of T1 by the 2 hour mark.  I'm hoping that I can find a 1:50/100 swimmer who I can draft and does all the sighting for me if only I were so lucky!

I've never done an OWS with such a large group for a long distance, and I'm expecting there will be a few things that may slow me down.  The main reason I'm doing an Oly is to have an OWS where I actually have to sight amongst bodies and draft.

Name: Sara

Bio: Living in Binghamton, NY and working as a Health Program Specialist for our county.  I get my diploma in May for my MS in Nutrition!  I started my multi-sport lifestyle one month after my dad died.  I did my first duathlon in his memory and finished 2nd to last.  I vowed to only get faster from there on out.

Current Training: I think I'm hitting 12+ hours/week now, sans recovery weeks.  I'm learning that my body can't handle the bike/run combo volume, so I need to incorporate more pool time in my training in the way of aquajogging so that I can get the cardio benefits and increase muscle strength.

Prior Races: Steelman Tri, Broome County Tri, Mountain Man Duathlon, Musselman, Keuka Lake Tri, Lake George Tri

2010 Races: IRONMAN LAKE PLACID!

Weight Loss Goals: It'd be nice to not be an Athena anymore.  I tried the "smart" way to get my BMI under 25 when I was getting married 3 years ago and honest to God I couldn't maintain that weight.  So, I guess I'm kind of stuck being 155 lbs at 5ft5in, but I'm okay with that.  My weight has increased over the last three months so I'm hoping it's just muscle!

Why me?: I mentored a group last summer and LOVED it!!!  I had a swim-focus and really enjoyed answering questions.  Right now, I still keep an eye on the mentees, but I'm in a place in life where I have to focus on me and this HUGE race coming up in July.  I'm hoping everyone here can help me keep on my training plan, especially with LOTS of motivation to get on the bike!

Thanks Fred!!!!

Just tried to get some run time in tonight after last night track practice. My legs were rubbery tonight and sore but I still got 3 1/2 miles in. I am still building my base on the run so I'm pretty slow right now. Tomorrow will be my rest day as were going to a photography art gallery opening in the evening.

Glad to be in the group.

I noticed you run in Newton's.

I just started running in them and really like them. What are your thoughts?

As you can see I only have about 50 miles in them.  I'm naturally a forefoot runner, started out with some stability shoes and grown to hate the excessiveness of them.  Started with the Nike Triax (11s, then got some 13s), shifted towards the Mizuno Wave Elixir 4s and started hating the big nike's.  Then got a set of Newtons and am really in love.  All those other shoes tried to force me into heel striking since that's what they were meant for, the Newtons let me run the way I prefer.  I picked up a pair of Vibrams, but not sure if my feet are ready for those, plus, you can't put those on that fast during a tri.  The Newtons are quick to put on (just add some speed laces) and I noticed a big drop in my HR at the same paces I run with my other "standard" shoes, talking 5-10bpm less with the Newtons.  I'll be taking them out for their first race this Sunday for a half marathon.  Hoping to come close to run it at the pace I'll need to BQ.  Figure if I can run that pace for half now at the altitude in Denver, then by the time my goal BQ race comes up, at the end of October at sea level (Marine Corp Marathon), that I'll be in shape to keep that pace for the entire 26.2

For the Newtons... Anyone that naturally prefers forefoot running really needs to try a pair... the price tag is hefty compared to some deals you can get on other stuff, but it's really worth it.

Good advice Fred,

My experience at Lake Placid, being my one and only mass start (all the others have been less congested wave starts) was better than expected and feared.  I did stay to the back at the start to avoid the worse of it as swimming is not my forte.  I finished at about 1:20, just under 2:00 per hundred.

One thing I found interesting is the second lap the small lake had a slight whirlpool effect.  I could feel a slight current at the end of the dock!  Did you notice that Fred?

I am travelling for work this week, so no bike or swim, just a run focused week!

I have mixed feelings about OWS in general.  Getting in the cold lake and feeling the water run down my back as I immerse  is always a jolt but having the extra buoyancy (for me in the legs) is huge.  I have never done a mass start though sometimes it feels that way especially when I have been in the same wave as some men and the aqua bikers.  I always hang back at the beginning of the wave start and let things calm down a bit as I will not save any time or energy by getting beat up in the masses. I have been in races that do a time trial start which is really nice.  Those mass Ironman starts are amazing.  Very scary looking. Do you Ironman/women ever wonder if it might be a good idea to do a wave start at Ironman distances or does that take away from the whole experience and earning the title of "Ironman" ?

for me...never doing a mass start...the whole idea of it is so exciting. Watching the videos on youtube always leaves me smiling. I am sure it will be crazy and it will suck to get kicked and punched, but the mass start is defintely a reason why i am as excited as i am to do an IM.

I'm SO jealous of your job!! I was really into environmental issues in high school and decided to go into psychology over enviro science when I was in college, but stayed active in the issues with MASSPIRG.  That's awesome for you to be out there!!

PennState - 2010-04-08 6:20 AM I think OWS is a really good subject to start with!

My personal swim times in HIMs tend to be low 30 mins. IM is about 1:05-1:06. For reference I swim my easy paces at 1:30 per 100 yds and threshold stuff under 1:20.

Darn! You and I should be swim buddies!  We're RIGHT at the same times!!! (It doesn't look that way from my blogs, but I swim the same times as you).

I'm totally the same way - I've only ever done wave starts but I love the swim start, it is one of my favorite parts of doing tris. I remember watching videos of the starts at IMOO, IMLP and IMCDA last year and they all gave me goosebumps. I'm sure it's chaotic and probably a little bit scary but it is also really exciting to me.

I am fortunate that I live about a mile or so from an awesome lake that has a bouy line just under a mile round trip.  Clear water, about 5 feet deep.  Any morning from Memorial Day to a week or 2 after Labor day there is always people out swimming in training for the various triathlons in the area.  Plus our masters group hosts a Friday night swim there as well.  I rarely hit the pool in the summer unless we have an extended period of bad weather.

This really helps with the swim portion of the races!  If I could only get a bit faster!

Man, I wish I had that attitude towards the swim start.  All my races have tended to be smaller venues with perhaps a max of 700 people.  I even had one with a 200m run to get to the water, that really spreads everyone out as some sprint, others jog, others just walk.  One of my races this year is the old 5430 Long Course in Boulder.  Which historically has always drawn some of the bigger named pros (Wellington, Dibens) since it's in their backyard.  But now that IM picked it up and is calling it the "Boulder 70.3" perhaps it'll be a little bigger and expose me to that mass start mentality in preparation for IMAZ.

I love OWS, but when thinking of IMAZ I'm wondering just how long I'm going to have to waste energy treading water if I want to get a good position on the outside of the pack.  I think wasting the energy doing that worries me more than getting elbowed or anything during the start.  I figure it would just be like the start to an old high school cross country race, just in the water instead.  Elbows just happen to hit you and people give a little nudge because they need to get around you.  No one is going to hold your head underwater for 5 minutes.... I hope.

Going out for my 1st OWS this Sunday. I have 2 more weekends until my 1st OWS race on April 24th.

The Oly that I'm doing is a 1000 yd swim in the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. It is pretty shallow and calm so I don't think I'll have to worry about waves. I'm guessing that there will be about 250-300 people total in the swim. My plan is to be on the outside and wait about 10-15 seconds to let everyone get going. Right now my 1000 yd swim times are just under 20 min so I'm guessing that my OWS times will be somewhere around there out of the water. I've swam in the pool in my wetsuit and I shave about 20 sec per 100 off my time but I'm guessing with bumping and sighting that the time will be about 20 min out of the water. There is about a 200 yd run up the beach to transition which is included in the swim time so I'll hit my watch when I get out of the water.

I bought a pair of Aquasphere goggles that I haven't swam in yet so I need to transition to those for the next 2 weeks to get use to them. I normally just use my Speedo Vanquishes in the pool. I had read that the Aquasphere's are good for OWS's. I also got them tinted because my eyes are sensitive to bright light.

I'm pretty sure that all my Tri's coming up will be wetsuit legal which I prefer because I feel more confident with the buoyancy that my Xterra Vortex 3 gives me. If I had to do a long OWS in a trisuit or speedsuit I think I would freak out a bit and panic.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks so much!! My best friend used to work for NYPIRG...and the other day in the mail i got a letter from CALPIRG. The enviro sci stuff keeps me real busy...especially out here in california! I work exclusively on former/current military bases...so i get to see some pretty cool stuff in some nice places.

What college did you go to for psychology??

Thats awesome! Yeah i am pretty lucky too...i live right on the bay here...and do OWS swims every fri night with a group of mostly tri guys. Except the water is SO COLD!!! It has been between 54-56 so far....

I bet the continued OWS practice helps a lot...even if not w speed just sighting and swimming straight (for me swimming straight would be equally beneficial as swimming faster )
