I'm trying to choose my shoes... Mostly roads (asphalt?), though I think there are some patches of dirt here and there. If they have Quadzilla, you're going to have a few miles of dirt. If it's the route from last year(and it looks like the course map is the same) then it's almost all pavement. Last I heard, but I haven't confirmed, no Quadzilla this year. |

Master 2238 Dallas | Subject: RE: LongHorn Ironman 70.3 Triathlon Festival : Official Thread weissjaz - 2010-09-01 10:54 AM Just over 6 weeks to go. This upcomming weekend I'll be at the Disneyland 1/2 (just for fun and getting pictures with characters). In the following weeks I plan to get in at least 2 more 60+ rides. This is longer in time than my plan, but I know I need the time in the saddle. The other weekends my plan calls for bikes of 2.5 hours as bricks of either swim/bike or bike/run. Since biking is my week sport, would I be better off to throw in another 60 miler, or should I stick with the shorter rides with other workouts? This is my first HIM and I know the bike will take me around 4 hours. Get at least one more ride in, you have plenty of time to recover before race day. Bike endurance is built over miles and proficiency. |

Is Aqua jogging an option for you? that's what i would recommend at this time. I used it for a few weeks during one season in HS cross. Raced on saturday's, aqua jogged 5 other times during the week. Kept me in shape enough to PR that fall. |

Member 16 Pittsburgh | Subject: RE: LongHorn Ironman 70.3 Triathlon Festival : Official Thread The key there was "plan". Since I have a phobia to marine life, I tend to swim faster in open water. I have a cycling background so that is my strength. Even on two healthy legs I would be struggling to finish in 3 hours on the run...I am slow as molassas! Thanks for the info on the acqua jogging, I will try that! Edited by sunlvr71 2010-09-02 1:41 PM |

Member 175 Indianapolis | Subject: RE: LongHorn Ironman 70.3 Triathlon Festival : Official Thread I'll be making the trek down for the race... being a first year triathlete and a college student ($) is making working the details out a little tougher than I planned. If anyone could give me some advice on what to do, this is what my plan as of now looks like... FRIDAY: Flight out of Indianapolis 8:05 am. I am planning on flying with my bike (in a soft case) and 1 carry on. I am not sure whether or not I will need another bag or not, but I am not planning on bringing a whole lot of extra stuff. Right now my main concern is my aero helmet. Arrive in Austin ~2:25 pm. Cab to roommates family's house nearby. Dinner around 5 and athlete check in/expo before 7. Short run. Assemble bike. GOOD NIGHT SLEEP. SATURDAY: Check bike/bags in at some point (ps, is it clean transition?, i havent used bags for a half yet) SUNDAY: Race. MONDAY: Fly out of Austin at 6:30 to be back for my 2pm class. Anyone have any good recommendations or tips for me? I think I had nerve problems going into Cedar Point and I would like this trip to be as calm and relaxed as possible. |

Veteran 189 | Subject: RE: LongHorn Ironman 70.3 Triathlon Festival : Official Thread Just finished my longest ride ever; 65 miles. I hit the 56 mile mark at 3:55 which is about race pace as far as I am concerned. Then rode the extra miles easy. My Garmins shows 2000' of ascent, and mapmyride has it 1400'. I am hoping that is about equal to Austin. I probably should have done a short run afer, but the temps are now in the 80s and the wind is blowing. One gust almost took me down about 2 miles from home. Got to love the high desert of AZ. |

Elite 3088 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: LongHorn Ironman 70.3 Triathlon Festival : Official Thread Just checked the site and the runs maps have been updated. It's back to the course from 2 years ago: 2 laps with Quadzilla making its return. I would rather have seen last year's route maintained. I'm not a huge fan of the grass running. |

Oh wow, they must've just changed it! I was looking at it a day or so ago and it was still the 3 loop course. This is discouraging, I haven't been training for running big hills and have instead been focusing on my bike ride. Am I doomed? Heather |

If memory serves, with Quadzilla involved you're looking at 40-50% grass running. If I had to guess on the grade, I'd say at least 7%. It's been a year since I was last there though, so somebody else can correct me. |
