Crazymama - 2010-12-28 12:16 PM I hope I am not out of my league in this group but here it goes

I am a 32 year old mom of 3 (5, 4 and 18 months) and have been married for 10 years. This week is my first week home as a full time stay at home mom. I have worked as a Registered Dietitian for 10 years at a critical care hospital here in Indianapolis.

I have never done any sort of training for a tri. My sister has done an ironman and has caught the "bug" to keep going. It has rubbed off on me so I am going to train for the tri (olympic) in Cincinnati in July. I am also thinking about doing a Sprint in Kokomo, IN in June--not sure about that one.

I have always been fairly athletic and feel I can do this, but honestly I have no idea what I am doing. I work out 3-4 times a week (I am 5'5", 127# and this is the best shape I have been in) but typically just do free weights and a little cardio. I haven't done a lap in the pool in at least 10 years. Are floaties allowed...lol.

I will take any suggestions, any advice, any motivation available. I didn't know where to start but found some programs available on here...is that the best way to get started? I just have no idea what I am doing but I know I can do it!!

Thanks for the support!!

Leslie

The beginner plans on the website are a nice way of easing into training.  Try to input your workouts into the website's logs.  It really helps us give you feedback.

sand101 - 2010-12-28 3:36 PM I guess I should reintroduce myself:

Jacques - 39

Background: Back at the end of '08 I weighed in at 215 and hated it.  Bought a mountain bike and lost 45 lbs over 5 months.  Found out I was better at bouncing off of trees than MTB, so decided to try something else.  I used to be a swimmer, so I picked that back up and started running.  Even after a 20 year swim layoff it came back pretty well; the running was more of a challenge.  This last year was a good one for tris.  And I managed to complete a 3.3 mile swim in under 1:30 - the best achievement I have had in a long time.

So I can swim, and biking has come pretty well.  Just don't ask me to run.  Trying to fix that (again) over the winter.  Trying to get a half marathon done in under 1:37 in a month or so here.

2011 goals:
Sub 1:37 HM
Sub 1 hour 40k TT
Sub 1:25 3.3 mile swim

Which 40k TT are you going to race?

sand101 - 2010-12-28 5:54 PM All right Alabama guys.  I just signed up for Mercedes, Buster Britton, Mountain Lakes, and Rocketman.  I'll plan on joining the crowd up there in August.  Probably bring the family up there and bring the kids to go see real rockets after.

BTW, if anyone wants a discount code to use with Team Magic, use 2011dateswap?maybe/maybenot   or    ACT_prs120092

$10 off and as far as I know it doesn't expire.

Thanks for the code.  I've got to register myself and the wife for a couple races.

2011 is the year of my comeback.    Sick and injured for a while

What's going on Gary.  It's been awhile.  Hope you've gotten over your health issues.

 thanks big guy

At the end of June I was pretty much cleared to start going again with lots of blood work every two weeks for apx 2months to be sure.   So once I got going again, I ended crashing while mountain biking in Colorado breaking three ribs and two bones in my hand.   I lost about a 1/3 of my joint for my pinky on the left as part of one of the breaks. so it's funny watching that hand as I swim you can see that finger going backward since I don't have the strength to hold it there yet.

I've got an IM in 20 weeks so I'm slowly wrapping my head around just making the cut off time

now I'm thinking to just experiment and see how little training I can do and still make 17hrs.   Hopefully some sane people will talk me out of that idea

I've never done an IM so I don't have any outstanding credentials, but one quote I've always heard is this:

"Keep yourself warm, keep yourself fed, and keep moving. You'll get there...eventually" - Jill Homer

She holds the record for the Women's fastest time on the Tour Divide. Surprisingly, she's right.

Actually rode a bike today for 26 miles. I haven't ridden a bike in over 5 years--no joke! I am feeling really drained so I think I need to work up a bit more.

Also, should I be training in a certain heart rate zone? Is the length of time for a session more important than the speed/distance?

Thanks!

Wow! I'm sure Mark will chime in a little more, but I'll offer "my" advice.

You haven't ridden a bike in 5yrs, then jumped on it and did 27miles. It's almost common place that you're going to be pooped out, sore, tired, whooped, etc., if that's the most you've done in a long time. I don't see too much in your logs to back it up, but that's my guess.

Have you been riding any? Running any? What's your "normal" schedule like? That'll help us. If you're new to the whole thing, I'd throw the "zones/HR/Power/etc." out the window and just ride. Ride for time, ride at a steady pace, throw some pickups in there, but other than that, I wouldn't dwell on it. If I'm way off base (your speed makes me think you're not all that new to this), then maybe you should look into the Jorge Winter Cycling Plan over in the "challenge me" forums.

Also, looking at your post count, you're new to BT, so WELCOME! Glad to see new faces!

Looks like a good ride for the first time in 5 years.  I probably couldn't do that right now.

I agree with Sheep on throwing the zones/HR/Power/etc. out the window for now, unless you have some background in training by HR.  I'd focus on getting out and just riding/running, etc.  See how you feel at different paces, then coorelate that with RPE.  After you get back into it, then you can look at other methods that may work for you.

What works for one person doesn't always work for another, so keep your options open til you figure out what works for you.

Totally forgot the whole introduce one self bit

Screen name Gaarryy  = real name Garry
age 44..
doing tri's since 2005.   ran a few 1/2 and full marathons before starting triathlons.
Have done all distances except for a legit Olympic oddly enough.. there is a local race that I've done a few times that has all Olympic distances but the swim is 1500 yards not meters and then they cut it short. They litereally tell you that in the pre race briefing.. "don't freak out about the swim, it's 100-150yards short"
Been on BT??  a while

Starting feeling crappy in spring of 2009, went to the doctor and didn't take stuff too seriously. after a while doing the cycle of training, feeling crap -like, taking a break, dediced to get more test.. yada, yada, yada....  started training again this summer and after a month, just running and taking cross fit class, ended up breaking ribs and hand in a bike wreck..

So I'm a truly just getting back into things and need some sort of accountablity.

Thanks all! I wear a heart rate monitor but typically just for cycling class and interval weight training. When I do cycling classes I found my HR getting too high for me so would back it off to 150. (I am 32 years old so I thought this seemed about right).

You are right about nothing in my log book Before I got this triathlon idea in my mind I worked out 3-4 days/week typically with weights and very minimal cardio (like 15-30 minutes 3 days/week). I have 3 young kids though so I guess I do get a fair amount of activity I ran 2 1/2 miles yesterday just to see if I could really run...hahaha.

Ok, good to know about just getting on and riding. That is what I am thinking about doing the swim...I just hope I have it to even swim 100 m...I haven't swam a lap in probably 10 years. Like I said, I am in good shape but this tri stuff is way new to me.

Thank you for your help!!!!! I really really appreciate it!! I also started a blog to show anybody that they can do this crazy stuff

Agreed, dont worry about HR at all at this point. Just go swim/bike/run. Become fanatical about consistency, as it is more important that duration, volume, or intensity when starting out.

If I'm way off base (your speed makes me think you're not all that new to this), then maybe you should look into the Jorge Winter Cycling Plan over in the "challenge me" forums.

Also, looking at your post count, you're new to BT, so WELCOME! Glad to see new faces!

27 miles for a first ride is great.  Averaging 19 mph is even better.

What type of HR monitor do you own?  Did you record the data for the 27 mile ride?  Robert makes a good point, for now just get out and ride.  But wear your HR monitor, and record your averages at the end.

I also agree that if your more serious at least do the field testing mentioned in Jorge's blog.  This is the third or fourth year Jorge has provided the winter cycling program.  He's one of the better thought of coaches trolling the website.

Is it too late to join this group?  I'm not an RD, so I can't help out there.  In fact, even though I've been doing this for a few years I'm still very much a beginner.  But I am a woman, so if you are still looking for some more estrogen...

Welcome to the group.  How are the beaches?

Hey everyone!  Our beaches are great -- come visit!  This summer we had a little problem with the oil spill, but nothing like what the media made it out to be.

A little bit about me -- I did my first tri about 3 1/2 years ago, my first (and only!) HIM a year and a half ago, and that was my last triathlon.  A little over a year ago I was in a minor car accident, but it messed up my knee.  In Feb I had microfracture surgery to repair my "OCD" (and no, it's not the behavioral OCD, haha).  The recovery was really a pain, including a month of non-weight bearing, not something I want to repeat.  But in June I was finally allowed to start running (my first love!) and biking, and I've spent this summer and fall building up my base again.  I ran a half marathon back in November, and have another one a week from Saturday (Disney).  I'm not back up to my previous speed, but that's something I plan to work on this year.  I may start small again with triathlons, and only do sprints or maybe an Oly.  I have nothing in the plan except for some running races.

Oh yeah, I've been married to my very supportive husband for 26 years and I'm an "old" lady -- 53.  But in the recent past I've been a competitive runner (at least locally) for my age, and am going to work on getting it back!
