m.a.burghart - 2010-12-27 7:33 PM Info:

Name:  Jr

Age:  24

Height: 6ft
Weight: 180

Previous Experience:  I was a collegiate baseball player, but other than conditioning, have little endurance training.  Lots of weight training, plyometrics, etc.  Just finished P90X and am ready to push myself.

2011 Goals-  My first triathlon will be an indoor sprint in February, but am planning on 2 outdoor ones in May and June.  I am eyeing an Olympic Tri in early August, but don't want to get ahead of myself.  I am not just looking to finish, I want to be on the podium when I'm done.

I am open to any advice, ranging from training, equipment, race day prep, off season conditioning, etc.  I am so excited to get going!

Welcome to the group Mark!  That indoor tri is just around the corner.  I hope we can get you ready!

kitkat724 - 2010-12-28 5:37 AM Hey Neal!  Hope you have room for one more!

Name:  Christine

History:  This will be my second year participating in triathlons.  I did 2 sprint tri's last year (having to sit the third out due to a broken toe), both pool swims.  I have ran a few HMs.  My biggest issue is swimming and I have recently began trying/learning TI via YouTube/books.

Training:  I fell off the wagon after I broke my toe in late Aug.  I have been running....just not too much swimming or biking; however, I have been strength training (I drink the Crossfit Kool-Aid!).

2011 Races:  Nation's Triathlon (9/11) and the Half Full Triathlon (70 instead of 70.3) are on the calendar for me, but I would like to add a spring open water sprint/oly to the mix to get used to open water swimming before the fall.

Goals:  My goals for 2011 are to improve my swim and to complete the HIM.

I look forward to learning from your experiences!

Hi Christine!  Let's get you ready for that half iron distance!

[email protected] - 2010-12-28 8:22 AM Any room left for an out of shape Texan?

Name: mlsmith142 / Matt

Story:  Played college baseball but after full shoulder reconstruction ended my career.  Let myself get way out of shape and then "life" took over.  I got off my couch and decided to train for an Olympic distance Tri that I completed 4 years ago.  Work and life once again took over.  I find myself out of shape once again and looking to push myself back into shape.  My long term goal is to complete an Ironman.  This has always been a dream and I now find myself ready to start the journey.  I travel 5 days a week for work but have access to a gym in each location that has a pool and spin class/bikes.  Not perfect but I have to find a way to make it work

Family Status: 37, married with 2 daughters

Current Training:  Have been back in the gym lifting weights for the past 2 months but really feel the drive to do the tri thing again

Last Tri was in September of 2005 with very limited training since.

My goal is to lose weight - currently at 225 - and get back in shape.

If you are ready for a challenge, here I am!

Welcome to the group Matt!  Sounds like you have some challenges with the work travel, but with the right mindset you can get it done

m.a.burghart - 2010-12-28 9:03 AM Hey guys, Looking to buy some gear for my first tri.  Its going to be an an indoor sprint, so I wont need to provide my bike, but is there anything I should be looking for specifically for an indoor?  I already have shoes, goggles, cap, but was wondering about a tri suit or anything for the transitions?

Jr

I've never done an indoor tri, but tri shorts would seem to be a good option as that would be one less thing to change in transition

good question? i was wondering what to wear for the swim. Will chlorine totally ruin my tri shorts? Must I swim in swim trunks then change into my tri shorts and jersey?

Chlorine will ruin your tri shorts with repeated swims so I wouldn't recommend swimming in them all of the time.  I think you would be able to get away with wearing the shorts for the race.  Just make sure you rinse them out good afterward

MMF0710 - 2010-12-28 7:34 PM I have only ridden for sake of leisure. I'm mainly a runner. This bike will be for leisure and training. I'm only wanting to spend about 250-350 right now.

I would check Craigs List or e-bay in that price range. Go to a local bike shop and get sized, you want to get a bike that fits you.

This is very good advice.  When I first started out I got sized at the LBS and then bought used off of Ebay.  It was good enough to train for my first tri and I still ride it leisurely around town, to work and stuff, but I invested in a tri bike shortly after my first race.

The other thing you may want to consider if you do plan on buying a nice bike later on is possibly borrowing a bike for your first race to get a feel for the sport.  That way you have some extra cash leftover for the nice bike!

Hi i'm Dee
I use to run and do track when i was in middle school, but had to quit because of my dad, saying i'm girl and should focus on other things, it was a horrible experience letting my team down. Now i'm old enough to make my own decision and want to make my dream of doing a triathlon a reality. Years of not being active and living a college junk food life style have taken its toll on me, i'm not at my old fitness level. I would love to have you as a mentor, reading your brief bio gives me inspiration.

We're glad to have you, Dee!  I gained weight in college too.  It was nice to discover running and triathlon because having a race on the schedule seems to motivate me to make sure I am getting workouts in.

Hi Neal, hope you have room for 1 more.

I'm Neal Hamilton from Atlanta, GA.  I'm 45 years old, ran track and cross country in high school along with working as a life guard.  Played soccer in high school and college and then played semi-professionally in Germany for a few years which was my first assignment after joining the Army.  Retired after 21 years in the Army and I'm now working on my 2nd career.  The 21 years in the Army, including 7 years jumping out of airplanes took its toll on my body including bulging disks in my back, a ruptured Achilles tendon, and bad knees to name a few.  Also a Type 1 Diabetic.  I got into bicycling last year to try to get a little extra exercise and fell in love with it.  I did my first metric century last year and have my first true century scheduled on May 15th.  I have never done a triathlon but plan on completing my first sprint in Jun and I'm looking for a good Oly towards the latter part of 2011.  My current training has been weight training, mountain and road biking 2-3 days a week including interval training on my trainer since weather has been pretty crappy here in GA, and working on the 16 week couch potato to 5K run program here.

Well... after two weeks of sickness and a "slow down" after Silverman, it is very disheartening trying to get back into the swing of things.  It's just hard knowing I have lost so much so quickly.  Hoping it comes back quickly!!!

so how does this work, I've never been in a forum before, I have been reading everybody's intros.  Is there a quick way to look at this from the training log or do I go through the half dozen pages before I find this link.  It looks like I'm the only Aussie so is all confusing with the races you talk about but I guess we're all here for one thing - triathlon.
I do know that now I am in a group I daren't miss a training session in the program, although today all set to go to the pool afte work then a reminder came up that I had to have a haircut.  So that went out the window, I will get up early tomorrow and do it.

Here's an idea, let's proclaim our New Years resolutions/goals for 2011. They can be Tri related or other to make things interesting. I bet we learn something about each other and ourselves. I'll go first..........

Complete my first triathlon!
Complete my 2nd,3rd and 4th triathlons!
Eat healthy!
Drink less alcohol. (ouch)
Curse less.
Give more time and money to charity!

Well, I'm feeling pretty proud of myself this morning. I ran my second longest distance ever (11.38 miles), 2nd only to my 13.1 mile run I did at the end of the Silverman in Nov.  The training schedule called for a 1:50:00 run Z1 to Z2, so I set the treadmill to 6.2 and started running. It only occurred to me about half that at this pace it would be the 2nd longest run ever. And then at some point a thought entered my head, you know what you can do this ironman! Although the last 15 minutes were really  hard, it was awesome to finish!!

Suddenly the impossible has become possible!

Ok, here's my 2011 goals:

1.  Complete my first bicycling century.  I'm already signed up to complete the Georgia Tour de Cure in May.

2.  Complete my first Sprint triathlon.  Looking at a few options in late May, early Jun.

3.  Complete my first Olympic triathlon.  Want to make this around Sep/Oct timeframe here in GA.

4.  Complete the annual Georgia 3 gap bike ride in north Georgia mountains. (Sep)

I'm really looking forward to hearing your comparisons of IMSG to Silverman.  With Silverman in "pending" status and zero chance for me to EVER qualify for the 70.3 WC's, IMSG may be my next trip out west in 2012.

It will be fun to see how the 2 stack up. My brother-in law who did the IMSG last year and come to watch the Silverman. He drove most of the bike course, and said that the Silverman is definitely harder, of course maybe he just said that so I would have more confidence gong into St. George.

It looks like I will just be a volunteer at the next Silverman.

On an unrelated topic. How do you put the message you are responding to above your message?

For 2011 the following is for me

To complete Cairns Challenge Half Ironman without pulling out, like other races due to vomiting or to be brave enough to complete the race even if there isn't enough water safety

To do any races leading up to this event in June and train well

To not let work rule my life so I can train well

To support my husband in doing Cozumel Ironman in November, he is trying to talk me into competing but I don't think I have an ironman in me yet

And being an Aussie I get to celebrate the New Year first, but I bet I will be in bed before then - Happy New Year to all my triathlon friends and lets hope 2011 brings happiness and fulfillment in whatever you chose to do.

to your last point, if you pick "Quote" on the top right of the message instead of the "Reply" the message that you are replying to is pre-populated in the response...

I haven't driven the IMSG course but I have heard the same thing.  The water temps would have me wary and the swim is my stronger leg of the race...

I am also worried about the cold water, and the swim definitely my strongest leg.

Over the 3 day weekend I should have time to throw a table together that will have a direct link to this thread and links to everyone's training logs.  You'll be able to paste the table into the dashboard in your log for quick easy access

Great job!  It's always nice to have a confidence boosting run like that.  Even more impressive that you did that on a treadmill.  That's a long time to be running in place!
