Hello everyone!!  Happy New Year!!  I am motivated but Please, Please, Please push me!!  I am just worried that with everyday business I will slack off!! Any training advice is greatly appreciated.

I am starting to feel a little more comfortable in the pool.  The swim is my biggest concern, but I am forcing myself to jump in and just swim.  With my concerns about swimming, I don't want to slack on the running and cycling.  I work 3 -12's a week so training is going to be very limited on those days.  Any advice on how to make my workout balanced, getting enough swimming experience in?

Thanks

kduncan - 2011-01-02 12:44 PM Hello I would love to Join!  Training Now
Name: Karan/ kduncan
Story: This is a personal Fitness Challenge that I set for myself last May when I turned 40 I was at 271 pounds. Started a couch to 5K program had bad foot issues with plantar fascitis, took the summer off went to swimming. Started back in the fall to complete the Komen in Nov. and the Jingle Bell in Dec Currently at 230. I am slow but determined. I used to be a competitive swimmer in high school.
Family Status: Married 3 boys 9,7,4 very busy and athletic. Working Mom needs to keep up -
This Year's Races: I have a 5k On Feb 20th and the Danskin Tri on June 5th (Sprint)
Current Training: I pulled the 5 month beginner schedule off this site. I have not purchased cycling gear yet. I have been using a stationary bike, swimming laps, and road running. Took a since my last 5k on Dec 12th.
Weight loss: Obviously: A big Goal. I am currently on Medifast and have lost 40 pounds since Oct. Wondering if I should enter the Athena division or age division or if it even matters since my goal is completion.
What will make you a good mentor: Encouragement for someone totally out of their comfort zone. Realistic advise.

Thanks--I will check out "map my run". It would only work if I can map my suburb in Saigon. Smart phone won't work as mine is a "dumb phone" that only makes phone calls!  I think a time graph might be simpler for BT purposes--I usually average 1:30 to 1:40 per 100m in the pool over the course of a 2000-3000m swim workout (not counting rest intervals), so I can do the math and put the actual sets under "comments".

Tammy...I thought maybe you missed me??  Didn't think I was that short!

I am very excited for the group and the upcoming season.  I get my very first triathlon bike this Friday and am sooooo very excited to put in on the trainer!!!  The running is ramping up as the IT Band is still resolving.  I have been working hard in the pool and improved my breathing...thank goodness!!!  Wink

Very much looking forward to getting to know everyone!  Now, if we could just get rid of the snow and get outside and bike!!!

Hi Susie

Its good to take some time off structured training...the yoga and strength are perfect for off season.
Where do you live?

cyclingsusie - 2011-01-01 5:26 PM Story: I started being active in 2005 when my friend convinced me to do the bike ride across Iowa. I loved everything about it--training, socializing, the affect on my body . A couple of years later, another friend got me to sign up for a sprint tri. It doesn't take too much convincing! I did 2 that summer.i took the next year off fro competing due to laziness, and the year after I had shoulder surgery. This year, I did 3 tris. I loved how much I improved, but I want to move up in my age group. Family status: boyfriend and dog Current training: I need to work on this. I was burned out last month, so I mostly swam, did yoga,step...no real training. I'd like to continue yoga and do more strength, swim/bike/run at least 2 times a week. 2011 races: signed up for Oshkosh Half Marathon and Trek sprint. Considering doing and oly and maybe a full marathon. Weight loss: I'd like to drop some weight so I can increase my speed!!

I live in Oak Creek, WI. I'd love to find new training partners!

Where do you workout right now?  I'm in Waukesha...when it comes time to ride outside maybe we could ride together sometime.

I'm a member of the Y--I workout at South Shore, downtown or SW. In the summer, I go everywhere, but rarely exercise indoors. Although, I think I lost some swimming skills (if I ever had any) last summer by doing too much open water.

jlp..hey, I certianly will post a pic of my new beauty tomorrow as my dinosour computer at home doesn't have the pic on it.  I bought a Trek Speed Concept 7.0 and it is awesome!  I would definitely recommend a bike fitting.  Tammy encouraged me to have a "good" bike fitting when I was looking to upgrade from my road bike.  I went to Madison to Machinery Row and LOVED it!!!  Great people there!  My bike fitting took 3 hours as I was told I am very short...(yah, thanks) and so there were many accomodations made to the bike.  I also spent alot of time trying different saddles and by the time we got to the fourth one...wammo...heaven!

Great to meet you in the cyber world..hee hee!

Hi everyone! I'm still away from home and can't wait to start getting into the groove this year.

Do you have any suggestions to gain weight/muscle while training for a duathlon?
I have done some research and it boils down to: eating more, weight training, and getting enough rest.

I would like to know if you guys have a good 12-week duathlon program for beginners...

Did the first workout tonight 24 minutes on the spin bike and 12 minute swim. Not bad. I really gotta work on getting comfortable on a bike. Until I get equipment, which bike at the gym is the best to train on? I used a spin bike tonight.

Yeah..Id say eat more...esp before during and after training  Lots of protiens and good fats too.

Does BT have a duathlon plan?  If not Id take a sprint plan and sub a bike or run for the swim portion

I just got the same  bike Jodi did (trek SC 7.0 wsd).  Despite some minor tuning issues that I am still dealing with I love it.  Of course right now it is on the trainer so I have no problem with the aero position....as some of you know that might  be a whole different story when I get outside in the spring   FYI don't crash into a wet lawn that just got mowed...grass goes everywhere! LOL

Susie -  I know a couple of people that workout at that Y.  I teach at the Waukesha Y and also at Princeton Club in New Berlin.  I totally am with you on the no inside workouts in the summer idea.  I never swam in an indoor pool until I moved to the midwest.  During the summer I really dislike that idea but there aren't a lot of options.

The group can't be too full for ME, can it?

NAME: texastrim (Chris)

STORY: Weighed 330lbs at the high point. I lost 108lbs and decided to do a Sprint Tri. I finished it and felt as though i had completed a double ironman... ha!! I have raced  a handful of Tri's and a couple of Running Races. I have completed two HIM's and did ok. My strong point is the Bike and my weak link is my Run. Doing IM MOO in 2011.... Tammy has been coaching me for two years and under her direction I improved immensly.

FAMILY STATUS:
Dating - 3 Kidos

CURRENT TRAINING: A little bit.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: I only raced two races in 2010.. Galveston HIM - 5:49:46 and Dallas Rock 'n Roll Half Mary - 1:49:34.

2011 RACES:  Ironman Wisconsin. May be persuaded into a few more races... Just want to beat LRUNFIT in a couple of sprints...

WEIGHTLOSS:
I want to go below 195lbs and see what type of run speed and power on the bike I can get.....

Tam is a great coach and Lisa (lrunfit) and Dave (oriolepwr) are great folks. Let's all have a great season and hit our goals....

I used to teach at the Downtown Y, but I quit a few months ago. Kinda itching to go back. One of these days, I'll come to Waukesha to take your class!!

I was hoping someone would have some insight into a persistant injury. Late last summer, I increased my running mileage too quickly (probably) when training for a half marathon. After a 10k, the outside of my right ankle starting to hurt, to the point of limping for a few days. Of course, I ignored it, because I didn't want to be told I couldn't do the half. After that was over, and I still had pain, I went for a free injury eval. I was told I had a strained peroneal muscle, and was given several exercises. I was told I should feel better in a few weeks. I felt somewhat better, but the pain is still there. I got a case of the lazies in late November/December, and didn't run very often. I did a 5k on Friday, and have had constant pain since. I haven't ran since Friday. I'm going to try new shoes. Anyone have anything like this? Here's the especially weird part...when I run, it doesn't really hurt. It's mostly bad when I walk and when I move my ankle from side to side. ???

Do you think you need more stabilizing shoes??
