Royal(PITA) 14270 West Chester, Ohio | Subject: RE: June Battle of the Triathlon Sports Challenge Hey bikers, I got out to ride tonight, keeping it a light pace. In fact.....it was barely a Z2 ride.
I changed my goal from 250 miles to 12 hours because my legs are kind of quirky again and I don't want to jinx things or cause an issue pushing for a mileage goal. Edited by QueenZipp 2011-06-02 7:25 PM |

Extreme Veteran 668 Melbourne | Subject: RE: June Battle of the Triathlon Sports Challenge bodhi_girl - 2011-06-03 5:19 AM Crushers: Just got home from my job interview! I think it went great ... however I have a HUGE concern - despite giving them 3 current and relevant work-related references, THEY WANT TO CALL MY SUPERVISOR for a "supervisory" reference. As you well know, she's a moron (a really very bad supervisor, actually) who really doesn't like me and I'm sure would not only give me a bad reference, but also would spread gossip around the entire section about my pursuing another position! I'm really unhappy about this. As you well know - she's a huge part of the reason I want to leave the section I'm in! Sigh. So ... today not sure I'll get to the gym for my planned run ... or outside, for that matter ... I just got home, and the cabinet ppl will be here to fix my bowed cupboard anytime over then next 5 hours ... I must get groceries, do laundry, and clean the house as it's back to work tomorrow ... maybe I'll tack on a short run Sunday, take today as my off day instead. Sigh. I've got the same issue at the present, my direct manager is a twit. Thankfully I'm in a dotted line relationship with another manager who I have considered as a referee. However to play it safe I have gotten a former GM I worked really well with to be my referee, he's only been gone from the current org for 3 months, however I would have still used him if he was still here. Might take a bit of thinking outside the square, but you will get there. If the recruiters are any good, they will realise people take jobs because of the organisation, but leave them because of the manager in most circumstances. |

I love riding on my own but I figure for longer rides it would be nice to have the option to ride with others occasionally.... |

Can you tell them that: a) You prefer they not contact your CURRENT supervisor, as you're still working there and have not received a written job offer from them yet? And then.... b) Then give them the name of a PREVIOUS supervisor at a job that you had before? This would allow them to get a supervisory reference, without causing any bad feelings at your current place of employment.... |

Extreme Veteran 668 Melbourne | Subject: RE: June Battle of the Triathlon Sports Challenge ok, got my news from the specialist, not what I wanted to hear at all but based on that, I will join the bike team this month. I've managed to do a slight tear in my other achilles, so that's a slight tear in my left one last October, and now a slight tear in my right one. I can do gentle walking, swim breastroke and easy riding (ie no standing up to pedal) this time so bike it is. Stupidest thing is I did this one while walking backwards 2 steps. Oh well, at least it isn't 3 months of doing nothing again like last time. |

Elite 3913 far northern CA | Subject: RE: June Battle of the Triathlon Sports Challenge I finally had a good day today! I taught my Spinning class this morning and then went to the other gym for a swim, sauna, and shower. When I got home, my son took a long nap and I did some yoga. I hope this good day carries over to tomorrow when I run in a women's only 5 mile race. I know I won't be very fast due to recovering from pneumonia but I'm extremely thankful to just be able to race again. |

Veteran 392 Calgary | Subject: RE: June Battle of the Triathlon Sports Challenge Thanks all for the positive feedback on my supervisory reference issue ... The deal is that I work for the City, specifically the Police Service, and it is City mandate for supervisors to NOT give references for past employees ... it is *supposed* to be easy to move laterally and to apply for promotions, supervisors are supposed to support qualified employees moving on and up - however MY supervisor is, unfortunately, a small mean-spirited spiteful woman ... she's worked there 20+ years with virtually no change, and doesn't like people like myself who challenge or threaten her. (As an aside, this particular position is "Team Leader" - NOT a supervisor - my Section is set up weird it's a long story...) I've contacted a past supervisor from another Section (I've been with the Service a long time!) but she can only provide a personal reference ... City policy - current employee applying for a promotion (which this is for me) means contact with their current and immediate "supervisor". Sigh. When HR calls to say they're doing the reference checks - I'm going to explain the situation tactfully and professionally ... just say that I have some privacy concerns about them contacting my Team Lead and would they mind instead contacting the Section Manager? Also as an aside - my Team Lead has a terrible reputation in the Service as she cheated on her husband, a cop, with several other cops including high-ranking management .. it broke up their marriage and she's well known in a negative way as it was quite the blow-up - people actually got demoted because of their "indiscretions". So ... hopefully that common gossip will be enough to support my request to HR to contact someone else ... Sigh. It'll work out the way it was supposed to, right?! |
