Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: Team Liquigas Official Thread Bripod - 2011-07-07 6:04 PM dalessit - 2011-07-07 6:36 AM I hear ya on the morning rides having the whole day to do whatever - doesn't work for me though because I'm just not a morning person! haha I've become WAY bike-focused since I got signed up to do RAGBRAI, and I've really been toying with the idea of trying my hand at a crit in the future, once my achilles gives me the go-ahead to really stomp down with serious force. I did a time trial about two weeks ago when I wasn't really in time trial shape, but I talked the foster kid into going with me and he ended up becoming the de facto state champion in the 10-14 age group, since the kid who beat him was from Iowa! So that was kinda cool. There's a place in Lincoln called Champions Fun Center where he wanted to go for his birthday gift from us and I talked him into waiting a week so we could do the TT and on the way back home from the TT I turned to him and said, "See, if you had gone to Champions today, you wouldn't be a champion today!" What's everyone's excuse for doing the TdF challenge? I figured it would keep me on track to average 25 miles per ride as part of my regularly scheduled RAGBRAI training, since I knew I would do at least 12 rides between the start of the challenge and the start of RAGBRAI which just so happens to start the last day of the TdF challenge! 25 miles done this AM, it feels great to get a 6am ride in and be done for the day. I've switched more to bike racing this year than tri's so I have to get out with these guys as much as humanly possible. They rip my legs off the majority of the time but it was nice this morning to be able to hang for the whole ride. Have a great day everyone Also, post more, we're way behind Dee's group, can't have that. just post about anything or nothing at all, that's what she does ; ) I've been doing it the last 3 or 4 years, it really got me into watching the TdF. Also more excuses to talk about bike racing. |

Yeah in years past there was a lot more talking going on between teams, I was on Sanuier Duval a few years ago, and every time Ricco (doper looser) won, I posted his picture in everyone elses team blogs.

Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: Team Liquigas Official Thread So any exciting plans for the weekend? Doing a 90ish mile ride out to recon a race course I'm doing next weekend. LOL, 1 lap of the course is only 13 miles but we're riding up to the course from DC. |

HA!, you might be the first. I fell over in front of a group of people when I first put them on my mtn bike years ago. The trick is to make sure when you lean over that's the side that you have unclipped. Not good when you lean left and have the right foot unclipped. |

What's the over/under that he makes it through the Tour without falling over? It's not a matter of forgetting to un-clip when you come to a stop, at least in my case it's been a matter of having to make a snap decision, coming to a stop and not having time to un-clip. One time I was coming up to an intersection on the trail that rides right along with the street. The light turned yellow and there was a car to my left that wanted to turn right. I hesitated because I wasn't sure if he was going to turn right in front of me in order to beat the light, and I went down. Goofy stuff like that will get ya. |

Veteran 329 El Paso, Texas | Subject: RE: Team Liquigas Official Thread Rode six miles of intervals this morning. (Then swam a mile of boring drills.) Now - do I go on our local bike club's 60 mile ride tomorrow or do I put the clipless pedals on the bike and practice, practice, practice unclipping? And I just know some wise-acre is going to suggest putting the pedals on tonight and riding tomorrow. No—I have an aversion to blisters and this wouldn't be a good time to break in the new shoes.

If you're prone to blisters then I'd say hit the group ride and try the new shoes throughout next week. If you're not particularly prone to blisters then I'll be the smart-ankle and tell you to get them on there and do the group ride - you will surprise yourself with how efficient you are and how much better it feels, and worst-case-scenario you just cut it short after 10-15 miles or something. I was ashamed that I hadn't gotten my shoes and pedals put on my bike sooner than I did (had the cleats/pedals for two years before I got shoes to go with them) because of the huge difference it made over toe straps and running shoes! All my friends started teasing me that I will no longer have lightning fast T2 times anymore |

Agree, if you're at all nervous about new equipment, I wouldn't use it on a 60 mile ride. Got in another ride today, just a quick spin to get legs ready for tomorrow. |

Pro 4339 Husker Nation | Subject: RE: Team Liquigas Official Thread Got a hard-fought 11.5 miles in today. Hooked the kid trailer up to my bike, rode it to our other foster kids' daycare, then we took the trail home (read: the long way). Wind was coming out of the southwest so I really was in a crosswind or headwind 80% of the time, so I'm surprised I averaged almost 13mph considering my normal average with the kid trailer is under 12. Off day tomorrow and then team duathlon with my wife on Sunday! Woo! |

Veteran 329 El Paso, Texas | Subject: RE: Team Liquigas Official Thread Bripod - 2011-07-08 9:02 AM What's the over/under that he makes it through the Tour without falling over? You should have set the over/under for the first day of riding with clipless. I was fine, I had traversed to the start point after a break and I just wanted my bike pointed slightly differently—I was almost parallel to the road, but needed to move my front tire over maybe six inches. Lifted the handlebars and pushed the front end to the left while the left foot was clipped in. I was in front of the ENTIRE group, not a single person missed my tumble. Veteran 329 El Paso, Texas | Subject: RE: Team Liquigas Official Thread I had a 63 mile ride with the local bicycle club this morning. My longest ride EVER! Bicyclists are funny. They encourage drafting—oh how much easier that makes things. And they stop to rest a lot. We went 20 miles and stopped at a convenience store, then went another 12 miles and stopped for coffee and muffins at a restaurant. Then we stopped again at the C-store on the way back and took one more stop since it was a nice shady spot. |

I ended up only getting in just under 80, I was planning on doing closer to 100 but had some back issues, and severe calf cramps, lol I ened up losing 5 lbs on the ride today.

The nice thing about falling down while clipped in is that the anxiety is now gone. Now you can focus on trying to pedal while not clipped in and banging your shin or achilles on the pedal. Not that I would know anything about that... =) Bicyclists are funny. Yeah, drafting is really awesome--one of my favorite parts of riding with someone else. Who knew 18mph was so easy?! How often you stop with a group of roadies largely depends on the roadies and the type of ride they're doing. Wednesday nights here there is a no-drop ride and if everyone can hang on to the pace then they don't stop, but if someone falls off they usually stop at the next turn to allow them to catch up. Sounds like you've got a good group there! |

Champion 7821 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Team Liquigas Official Thread Ok... Finally got to enter my details in the spreadsheet. My totals are based on my HIM training plans, so just under 200 miles for the next few weeks. I had planned a 35-40 mile ride this morning, which would have put me ahead of the game, but I had one mechanical problem after another-- first a flat tire, then a defective inflator, then a bent valve stem. I managed to get just enough air into the tire so that I wasn't riding directly on the rim and then limped home. I tried holding up my arm like they do in the TdF, but no magic yellow car appeared with a new wheel for me. Bummer. I'll try to make the miles up on the trainer tonight. |
