Sorry for the late intro Kelly. I am the official Kelly Burns stalker, and do whatever she tells me to do.

Name: rizer22 (Jeff), age 34.

Story: 2010 was my first experience with anything endurance, other than high school sports, and being a gym rat. 2010 started with Mountain Biking, and completed 3 XC MTB races. Had a severe illness in the fall 2010 that sidelined me for three months. Plan was to buy a road bike to build my endurance for mountain bike racing.  Yeah, that turned into loving the road bike, and committing to Triathlon after seeing the local hospital sponsoring their first Sprint Tri in my hometown. That was august 2011, so I had time for plenty more events before then. Started training, and found out how much I loved the sport.  Golf clubs pretty much stayed in the basement all of last year. I now feel better than I have in ten years since dealing with major sinus issues and 11 surgeries on clearing those sinuses.

Family Status: Married, two kids (Cole 7, Brayden 4).  Cole completed his first kids Tri in June 2011 as well.

Current Training: Interesting subject. Currently riding trainer few days a week, and hitting the gym to work on strength.  I have two medical issues I am dealing with, that are killing me. IT Band issue, that won't seem to go away, so I have not been running. And a shoulder issue.  I was involved in a not at fault accident in Sept 2011, causing a posterior and anterior labrum tear, and partial rotator tear in the right shoulder.  Surgery Jan 13th. No swimming for 12 weeks.

2011 Races: Cupids Chase 5k, King of Burlingame Mountain Bike TT, Winding Trails Route 66 XC MTB Race, Domnarski Farm Route 66 XC MTB Race, Glastonbury Ten Penny Ale Duathlon, Lake T Weekday Series Sprint Tri, Niantic Bay Sprint Tri, DKH Sprint Tri, Hartford Half Marathon, DAS Cross Race.

Planned 2012 Races:  Still building on this.  Original plan was Rev3 Quassy HIM in June. Shoulder surgery has nixed that.  So tentatively, here is the sched as of now:

Glastonbury Ten Penny Ale Duathlon, Rev3 Quassy Olympic, Niantic Bay Sprint, DKH Sprint, Timberman or FirmMan 70.3, Hartford HM, and some various races mixed in (5k's, another Olympic etc)

Looking forward to another round of mentoring.  We have some great people returning.  It also looks like we have a VERY talented group with plenty of IM finishers.

DDVMM - 2011-12-19 10:16 PM

Welcome to all the new names!

Name: DDVMM/Michele

Story: I have been running on and off for years. Just when I thought I was in the best shape ever, I was diagnosed with metastatic thyroid cancer. I had surgery and radiation and was thankful I had such a good level of fitness to get through both of those with minimal problems. I joined a group called Surviving Strong - a group of cancer survivors that ran HM's and triathlons - it was then I was introduced to the world of triathlon. I did my first sprint last summer with the great support of this group and I was hooked!

Family Status: Happily married with 4 very busy children, Kaiya (12), Marnie (10), Quinn (8), and Ellie (3)

Current Training:I am doing a weight training only month currently and will be adding cardio back in after Xmas.

2011 Races: Unite HM, NJ State Sprint, Danskin sprint, Philly HM, a few 5K's and tri club sprints

Planned 2012 Races: Unite HM, NJ state oly, Danskin, Irongirl MD, Philly HM

Weightloss: I am at a pretty ideal weight but would love to get down another 5 pounds (we are never happy are we?)

I just wanted to add that I LOVE this group! Kelly is a FANTASTIC mentor and I have learned SOOOOO much from her and everyone else here!!!!

Very inspiring Michele.  Glad to see you back.

Name: jsklarz (Jeff Sklarz)

Story: Busted up ex-jock.  College football player - Defensive Tackle.  Played rugby in law school.  Then got married, had kids and got fat.  Lost about 40 pounds 5 years ago via tri.  Kept it off mostly, except I am up at about 230 right now due to a general lack of good eating or exercising following a bout with bronchitis.

Family Status: Married, 2 girls (8 and 3.75) and a puppy (who will be a boy for about 1 more month).

Current Training: Trying to get my butt back in gear.  Sick of losing to Kelly and Rudy

2011 Races: Tris were Rev3 HIM, Griskus Oly, Park City Oly, Martha Vineyard Oly.  Bunch of HIMs, bike rides, 5ks, etc.

Planned 2012 Races: I only race local due to family/work responsibilities: Savin Rock HM (March), Hartford QM (Kelly's Race! - April), Bloomin Metric century ride and hopefully a sprint or oly or DU (may), Rev3 HIM and Griskus Oly (June), maybe RI 70.3 (July), ParkCity Oly (August), MV Oly and New Haven Road Race (Sept), Hartford HM and Marine COrp Mary (Oct.).  Maybe some other stuff, who knows.

Weightloss: I would really like to get back to 210.  I'd be a bad mofo at that weight, but I really like beer and cheese, so its a struggle.

I am very happy to count Kelly and Shaun as good friends and glad Kelly let me back for a third take at her mentor group. Oh, I tend to be very sarcastic and blunt, so if i offend anyone, blanket sorry.  But i mean well.

Okay, another question -

Is it worth actually paying for a BT subscription?  At the moment I'm just working with a free one.

Sort of like public radio, you dont have to but this is a good resource and the folks who keep it going do need to make a living... also you get access to certain training log features and plans.  I have had all levels of subscriptions and find silver works for me.

I agree with Jeff, I think the silver plan is really worth while.  You get access to all the plans and get to use the full range of features.

While we all listed facts about ourselves, I thought it would also be useful to list our goals for 2012.

I pretty much have one goal for 2012 -- to qualify for Kona.  I have two shots at it, Ironman Texas in May and Ironman Florida in November.  I need to shave about an hour off my PR and get down to a 10:30 to have a realistic chance.

Wow, sooo many different people in the Mentor groups, I have no idea how you keep track...

I have a few goals for 2012, most of which involve hitting benchmarks at various distances:

5k - sub 18:00,

10k - sub 38:00,

HM - sub 1:25,

40k TT - sub 1:02,

OLY - sub 2:10,

70.3 - sub 5:00, hopefully sub 4:45

Despite the fact that obtaining these goals largely depends on race day weather, they still serve as markers for me to work towards!

Got some intervals in this morning on the treadmill.  It was raining here so I didn't have many options.  Hit up some yoga afterward.  Have an hour forty run scheduled for tomorrow.  I think it should be paced somewhere in the low 8 min area.

Goals for this year:

Get on a new ride

Approx. 2:30 Oly

If I get to do a 70.3 I'm looking for something in the 5:45 range.

Just numbers really.  I just want to keep progressing and getting faster. I'd also like to see the 150s on the scale.

Good morning, all!

It was really nice to actually take a rest day yesterday and spend some time really focusing on my kids.  I was ready to work out this morning though!

My goals for 2012:

-  1:45-1:48 at the Cleveland HM (as a new, slower runner, I would be beyond ecstatic with a finish time in this range)

-  5:30 finish at Half Rev Cedar Point (a 5:30 would put me in top 10 women 30-34)

-  All my other goals are more form focused, and any other races I'm participating in are prep for Half Rev Cedar Point.  I'd like to go 2:40 at my oly races.  I'd like to start riding in groups this summer.  I think it would push me on the bike.  I'm also going to participate in my first century ride as part of my HIM prep.  I'm doing a 2 mile open water swim race in July (also a first for me).  I'll be focusing on bike handling skills, riding and running lots of hills, and swim form with a master's team.  I'd like to hire a swim coach in the spring to give me some one-on-one attention, so I can really see where my flaws lie.

Good morning-

I tried a few months ago to set up a picture and failed.  I asked my wife to help and she decided it was our computer.  We recently set up a new computer so I will give it another try.

2012 Goals

Train injury free.

I really want to continue to build a base since I keep reading that with a good base comes faster times.

Right now I don't have number goals for races but I would like to break 2 hrs for a HM.  As I get closer to my HIM and IM I am sure I will have an idea of what I will want to do timewise.

2012 goals: (disclaimer:  I am not a fast person)

Mary: sub 4:30, preferably sub 4:15 (totally do-able, I've just had factors outside my control for previous ones)

my first IM: finish within the 17 hours and have fun

Train injury- and burnout-free

Improve my swimming and biking - technique and distance

And I am Rudy

Name:Rudy B  (rudedog55)

Story: I started all this for a charity bike ride in June of 2008, i weighed about 260lbs, i signed up for the 12 mile ride, training went well, so i bumped it to the 25 miler. 2 and a half hours later and lots of cramping and a near fall where i could not pedal up a hill that resulted in a 6" scar on my legs i finished, totally spent, but it laid the groundwork for the next 4 years. I have since been doing Tri's and bike racing since that charity ride and have completed 2 half irons and a bunch of sprints and olympics. I currently weigh 203lbs on my way down to 190 hopefully by March 1 for the start of bike racing season.

Family Status: I am married with a 2 year old daughter.

Current Training: I am currently working with Coach John Hirsch, who is a professional triathlete. I am run focused right now, as Jeff Sklarz told me, train your weekness and race your strength.

2011 Races: Ridgefield CT sprint, Patriot Half Iron, Mossman Sprint and Martha's Vineyard Olympic. I PR'd at all 4 races, Set bike course records at both sprints and won clydesdale in the two longer races. I also got in about 15-20 bike races of varying disciplines from Criterium to TT and Cyclocross. I am currently a Cat 4 roadie with enough upgrade points to achieve Cat 3, which i will do in the spring of 2012

Planned 2012 Races:  Spring bike racing, REv3 Quassy, Patriot Half iron, Mossman Sprint and the Martha's Vineyard Oly,  as well as another 20 or so bike races

Weightloss: i was a skinny kid that got fat on booze and crappy food, i am currently on my third winter diet to lose the last 25lbs, i have already lost about 15 of those and have a little bit more to go.

Goals: I am an ultra competitive person, i set big goals and work my tail off to get to them, all while trying to maintain a life/family/race/training balance. It is not easy.

Rev 3:  Sub 5 hours, have a top 5 amateur bike split

Patriot: Sub 4h 45m, place in AG m40-44 and have fastest bike split of the race

Mossman: Sub 1h5m, place or win m40-44, lower my current bike course record

Martha's Vineyard: Sub 2h15m, top 5 overall, Sub 1hour on bike

5k: sub 20m

10k sub 40m

Bike racing: win the Bethel spring series Cat 4 class, upgrade to Cat 3. Place in a Cat 4 Cyclocross race and upgrade to Cat 3

As you can see, it is all about the bike for me, my race revolves around it and i train it to race it all out and then worry about the run. As Jeff-y says, i am the Chris Leito of this mentor group.

Kell-y was one of my first BT friends and real lif friend, Jeff-y is probably one of my best friends in real life, both of those guys are partially responsible for me being where am today.

Don't hesitate to ask questions, this is one of the best mentor groups EVER on this site, you all have joined a great group of people.

I really want to continue to build a base since I keep reading that with a good base comes faster times.

This is actually a fantastic point.  In my experience, consistency is the key to getting faster.  What this means is swimming, biking and running in a sustainable way day after day.  Getting faster is not about a 12 or 20 week plan or key speed sessions, its just about getting it done.

Right now I'm in the middle of 12 weeks of base (all aerobic biking and running).  At the end of February I'll start building for IMTX.  In any given year, I'll spend about 20 weeks in base, building (and re-building) the aerobic engine.  For me. doing aerobic base work is the best way to stay injury free and stay consistent.

And now I'm off for my run.  Thank goodness for winter break (I'm a teacher).

EDIT:  I forgot to add, this was right after I crossed the finish line at my first marathon and my friends had come to cheer me on.

Has anyone used it? Did you feel race ready?

What other plans have people used?

In 2000 I put together my own plan and went sub 11 at IM Florida but I don't know if I was lucky, stupid, or just young
