You could get compression calf sleeves and I'd talk to the local running store about which shoes might help you the most. Most good ones have a treadmill there and can evaluate your stride and figure out if there's something there like an elongate gait or pronation.

Have you tried running with compression socks, calf sleeves?

You beat me by micro-seconds.

Also, how old are your shoes? Running shoes while training have a life span of 350 miles or so. so That's another reason why it's important to log your workouts. I agree with Scott have you had a Gait analysis done?

Is your group still open? I want to do an IM in 2012 and since it seems you've done one I'd love to get tips. I'll post a better profile if there is still room.

Thanks!

Well, I have never did a full 140.6 IM... I have done many 1/2 70.3 though. However my room is still open and would love to have you join if you'd like. Which IM are you doing?

I'm thinking about switching to a Garmin watch (so I don't have to wear the separate GSP device on my arm that is needed with the Polar).  Looking at the 910XT (which will give me all the details on one device - including power if I spring for a power meter).

If you can afford the 910 I'd do it.

Scott are you planning on a full in 2013(4)?

I went to Lukes Locker last weekend and had a gait analysis done. They told me that I had a neutral stride with flat feet. Got a brand new pair of Brooks that feel better than any previous shoe I've wore. Also bought some Zoot compression socks to try. I'm swimming tonight and will bike over the weekend and give my calf a rest. I will try to resume my running next week.

I'm probably going to volunteer at AZ when I'm out visiting Patrik, then sign up for next year.

I'm hoping to do the Red Man on 9/22. But I need to have plenty of time to train.

You only need 6 months of dedication to train for it... Are you going to follow a training plan?

My Profile:

Name: Chelsea Rae (I have two first names )

I'm married with a dog and a cat.

I was born and raised in Orlando. My driver's lisence still says I'm there, but really I'm currently a PhD student in the Midwest. Because we can't sell our house, my husband and dog still live in Orlando. I go to Orlando ocassionally  to visit  him and he comes up here sometimes too, we end up seeing each other about 3 days every two months and then 3 weeks in Dec/Jan. it sucks but we're surviving. Not having him around just opens up more time for training... right?

I love working out and when I'm not studying or reading I'm probably in the gym or outside. But I also have a huge sweet tooth, so I don't look like your average gym rat.

I've never done a triathalon, but am hoping to do an Ironman in 2012. I've always been best at distance sports. I've done a marathon, and that's been my only "race." I've also ran 20 milers in training a lot in the past but kept getting injured before the actual marathon. I swam in high school (the longest event 500 yards). I commute on my hybrid-bike to and from campus (except in the winter... I'm not that hardcore). One day this fall I just wondered if I could do a half-century ride, and did it that day and then kept adding miles. So far, I've done 4 century rides. I'm not afraid of the distance of the Ironman, I'm most concerned with transitions and staying properly hydrated and having enough nutrients for proper training and performance. My goal is to do a sub-14 hour Ironman... if I make through the training My husband (who once said he didn't want me training for any more marathons) is very supportive of me doing an Ironman, which is really motivating for me.

I'm excited to be in the group.

~Chelsea Rae

My plan is to get my base mileage up for running through mid-March. Hopefully by then the snow will be gone and I can start biking outside (I do indoor cycling classes, but its not the same). I will also find somewhere to do open swims once it warms up. I found a beginner Ironman training program on this website that starts 20 weeks out (which would be 5/5), I was planning on using that. I was also thinking of doing a shorter triathalon in April or May to get used to transitions and how everything is laid out.

Doing the a couple shorter races will definately help with transition experience and nerves. Race morning is so stressful and every time I end up with a new take away.

well depending on the triathlon or who the RD is, long distance racing is really not like short source in transition. So, if the only reason is to calm the nerves for transition then you might as do a 1/2 ironman instead of a sprint.

I did a 7.15 mile run this morning. First mile and last 1.15 at 10:00/mile pace around a mall where there's literally no ascents. The middle 5 miles were run at 8:38 pace and there were 184 feet of ascents which works out to over 36ft/mile, seriously hilly. The half marathon I'm running in March only has 177 feet of ascents for example. There are three major hills that make up the majority of that 177 however so this was good practice. Those three hills are spread out so this was actually harder. I'm hoping to run it sub 8:00 so overall a good training day to prepare.

It turns out the 910 is not on the shelves until March (hopefully).  I'll probably spring for it then.  However, I'm having a hard time justifying a power meter since then my watch and power meter would probably cost more than I spend on my bike (It's a $3,000 bike that I was able to get on e-bay for $1,500).

Do you find using your power readings on the bike so helpful that it justifies the cost?

I personally think training with power is very valuable... Watch and power tap, you could get for about the same price you bought your bike for. Are you going to get a wireless one?

I'm curious to see the Garmin Vector system when it comes out this Spring (a power system in the pedals) rather than having to build up a wheel.
