Leavenworth Tri Club is going to be doing an open water swim practice on the 11th down by T1 around 1 pm I think. Might be worth emailing them/checking out the website.

I know I'll be there freezing my everything off, hopefully it will feel good after Running with the Cows 13.1 that morning!  Got to know what I'm in for with this water temp...

kuatb - 2013-05-02 1:36 PM We still got 18 days for it to warm up! (Looks out window...starts crying).

LOL We will be okay. A little cold water never hurt anybody . . . wait, um.

It's going to be fun, and it has to warm up a little, right?

Saw an updated run course on the FB page.  Haven't had time for a detailed look yet. They also mentioned they're looking closely at water temps...

1)  The new run course makes sense and will be much easier only going up the hill once, but will be pretty crappy for spectators to have to lug down there to see the finish.  Might take away from the number of spectators in the campground area that makes it so cool.

2)  If they remove the swim, I might go postal.  Wink

Fingers crossed that they don't cancel the swim. or even shorten it. I don't care if it's cold. It's got to be warming up a little. (The Clinton Lake page still says 48F for water temp).

I would be happy to have to run up that hill only once. Just saying.

ETA: Reece -- what facebook page are you looking at?

So.... looks like 1 transition area?

That's a narrow road for all of the bikes coming in, runners leaving and 2nd loop runners coming and going.  Transition will be a zoo for that little access road, but it was a zoo at Longview Lake for that access point as well.  However, the run exit was on the opposite side of transition so less congestion at the bike in.

I do enjoy the "about" section on the facebook page;

"The 5150 and Sprint Triathlon has moved" - so the KC Tri didn't move, just the 5150 and Sprint.  Ha.  Good stuff.

This will be fun, still no athlete package as of 8:00 am, all those Facebook comments from the race planners about the water temp. So do you think 1) It's going to be a duathalon or 2) They are making changes to the swim course to keep it along the shore in shallow water so it's warmer?

Discuss! Surprised

I recall racing Heritage Park triathlon in Olathe in early May a couple of years ago and I'm pretty sure the water was in the 50's.  It was a smaller event, but I would think they would hold the same standards for safety and they kept the swim, but it was only like 500 yards.

I couldn't feel my feet until about a mile out from the finish line.  That was a cold suck day.  Hopefully the swim stays.

But, since I'll be in Iowa for the USAT level 1 coach certification the 16th through the 18th at 5:30pm, I will be out of town for all of the packet pickups.  I'm a little nervous that I won't be able to work something out to get my chip and race number.  I've started the process trying to get a hold of someone through FB page and Ultramax web site contact form, but it's discouraging to see the smattering of posts of people not getting answers from race organizers.

That was Heritage Park 2 years ago. They announced the water temp every 5 minutes as 56 degrees and wanted people to switch to the Du. That was the shortest swim I have done, and the worst swim I have done. No one wanted to warm up because the air temps were in the 40s and the water was in the 50s. Jumping in was a shock to the system to say the least. Never fully recovered.

It's going to be interesting to see which of these RD's chooses to make a move first.  I wonder if one will cancel the swim and the other keep it?  That should make for some interesting discussions.

I was wondering that as well, Longview has to be having the same temp. problems, wonder if they will make a change.

At this point, I think you have to assume they are changing it up, if not, why no race guide yet?

Looking at the 2 week outlook, I don't see many cold night, and plenty of days in the 70s. I will bet the water will be 60 by race day I Longview. Clinton is a bit bigger, but it should still warm up a bit.

I'm hoping this doesn't happen, as the swim is actually one of my strengths, but has anyone ever been a part of a tri converted to a du on race day?  When would you guess they make that call?

I'm a couple hours west, but it's sunny, clear, and warm (78) right now here, so the warmth is heading that direction (if it's not already there).

I never had a thermodynamic problem in school to estimate lake temp based on ambient temperatures over a period of time but my gut tells me if these temps hold true, we should be over 60 deg F by race day.  With the swim Patrick crushes me by 10-15 minutes w/o swim only 5-10 minutes :P

The numbers in % are chance of rain.

If the RD has balls the 5150 will have a swim. Many better run and communicated races in cold water areas state if the water is below 65*F you must have a wet suit to race. You would think that would be a no braineir anywhere on a races web-page, along with how transition is setup (i.e. assigned or not), and having the dad-blasted course not changing one week before the race!

Just got this from the WTC explaining the new IM and IM 70.3 swim start changes this year. It also included this nugget...Water temperature below 52 degrees Fahrenheit or above 88 degrees Fahrenheit will result in cancellation or shortening of the swim portion of the race Originally from: http://www.ironman.com/triathlon-news/articles/2013/05/swimsmart-in... know the water temps will be over 52, so if they follow these guidelines, the swim should be on.

I think that ITU races require wetsuits below 57 deg F.  I'm fairly confident the temps will rise to at least 60 by race day.
