gordon_mom - 2013-02-19 1:49 PM Last year we went Friday evening and it was great. I think there were maybe 5 others there. Year before did the Saturday check in and waited over an hour in line which to me is just way to stressful. If you can get there Friday that is totally the way to go for anyone able. As someone mentioned, the race start is about a mile away from packet pick up. Whatever you choose just give yourself enough time you can check out the transition area and that loooooong run up the sand and maybe a quick dip! |

Veteran 513 Chicago (Old Town) | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread I like the Friday idea! I was thinking of just leaving Chicago Saturday morning, but going Friday does sound nice! Would also be nice to make a 4-day weekend out of it, too.. BTW, is anyone else staying at the super-luxurious Estupendo Ocho (Super 8)? |

Yeah, we did packet pick up on Friday evening, then dropped off the bikes on Saturday. |

Veteran 203 Boulder | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread Thanks all for the great info on the check-in and expo! I also didn't know that we had to drop off bikes on Saturday. The last 70.3 I did you just checked them in the morning of the race. That's why these threads are so great! |

Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread Bikes must be checked in Saturday, no race day check in. Ok well I think for the pros but what do I know. So yes going Friday for packets means going back Saturday to drop but with zero stress. We met a bunch of people for a swim and then went and racked our bikes. Really a nice way to do it if you can. |

I'm inclined to stay Sunday night so I can relax after the race... Not sure what the folks do that come in from out of town. If you decide to stay Sunday night, there are some great outdoor bars/restaurants on the harbor in Racine and Kenosha. Might be worth it to relax before a long drive home. Cyndi |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread JimmieIII - 2013-02-19 2:34 PM bsantelik & brigby1 - Thank you very much for your feedback. I am going to train and give this a shot. Again, I really appreciate your time and look forward to seeing you at the race! Good luck! Really emphasize the intervals too. Just cruising along on a spin bike doesn't work that well. Have to make yourself work. Both shorter and longer ones. Had a discussion on this with someone smaller when we realized this. She was smaller and newer, so not as powerful. That means the flywheel would be helping out considerably at more typical efforts for her. I'm bigger (180 lbs) and strong on the bike, so have the resistance up higher. It really changes how the bike feels as the coast down time is substantially shorter where I'm at, so it's a better workout for me. Not quite the same as the trainer, but closer than what the other person was seeing. So with this, do what you can using the intervals to get in more work at a higher level. Sometimes shorter ones of a few minutes, and sometimes longer ones of 20 min or so. One should be doing this frequently anyway, but it'll be especially important on what you're riding. I'm currently on the fence with this race, but will still keep checking in from time to time. |

Any recommendations on which one(s) are the best that we just don't want to miss? My favorite is the Milwaukee Ale House ( http://ale-house.com/). I like their unfiltered beer. There's also Lakefront Brewery ( http://www.lakefrontbrewery.com/). And then there is the Horny Goat. I'm not sure if they do tours or even have a restaurant location: http://www.hornygoatbrewing.com/wordpress/ If you want to get a taste of micro brews in the area, I might suggest Cafe Benelux ( http://www.cafebenelux.com/menus.php). They have a wide variety of local beers....however they do turnover their inventory, so you may not necessarily get what you want on a particular day. Just on a side note...there is a great Microbrew (New Glaurus) that you'll find in a lot of the restaurants. I highly recommend you try the spotted cow. It's another unfiltered beer. New Glaurus is not located in Milwaukee and they do not ship outside the state (at least not that I'm aware). Cyndi |

Any suggestions on where to stay? I've been there to watch a few times and have arrived similar to a lot of the athletes. Plenty early to go down for the pro start, but also not first on site. Have had good luck getting a spot in the area just south of the beach. A number of lots there are used for parking and are only a few minutes walk (5-10 maybe?). |

Regular 107 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread Pick up some New Glarus Beer. Available anywhere. Moon Man (no coast pale ale) is my fav. I would suggest, since you are from Denver, to goto Lakefront and Horny Goat. The bars that carry lots of beer selection most likely distributes those selections in Colorado. At least you cannot get Lakefront in Denver (as far as I know). And New Glarus doesn't ship outside WI. NG is famous for Spotted Cow - a session/wheat beer. But they have all kinds of delicious beers. Three Floyds is within a 3 hour drive and would be worth going to for their Zombie Dust (DIPA) and Gumballhead (Wheat Beer). I will try and get you some of that if you wish tho I trade NG for 3F all the time |

Regular 107 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread Basically right under the zoo. Just north of North Beach. At the top of this hill (Behind Craig) is the best spot for spectators. You will see the runners 3x (the 4th time you want to be at the finish line). My family and kids (and friends) will be there with coolers of beer if anyone is interested. |

My photo set included a nice time lapse of me walking up the hill, seeing the photographer, and then starting to "run" for the picture. Very flattering, almost like a flip book. |

Very flattering, almost like a flip book. Haha, ok. I was photographing people I knew and some pros from the previous hill, by the zoo exit and big staircase area the year before (2011). And the other guy was right, this is a fantastic area for watching as it's a very nice area, you get to see the people multiple times without moving, and can still see transition as it's not too far away. Also plenty of time to get to the finish after whoever you're watching goes out on lap 2. |

Veteran 203 Boulder | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread Thanks Cyndi and Troy!! I will definitely check out the places you guys mention. I have had Lakefront Brewery's India Black Ale (good) from LiquorMart in Boulder. And I've sampled their stuff (can't remember) at GABF. NG sounds intriguing, especially since they don't ship outside of WI. We're driving so I'll have to grab some to bring back to CO. And of course, in the back of my truck will be plenty of good CO microbrews, if I feel good enough after the race |
