Either that or people are afraid of a little climbing!Hope everyone's training is going well - race day is sneaking up on us! What is the participant limit? Last year was a sell out and they had 2171 participants, so this years 2100 seems pretty close to sell out. No? I think the 2171 was the number that showed up in race day. Add about 15% (the DNS number) to that for the actual "sell out" number. So 2500 is probably the cutoff.
That would made sense but actually the 2171 is All registered participants. The breakdown is as follows: DNS: 46 DNF: 140 Finishers: 1985 Total: 2171
Further breakdown: Pro: 28 (0 of which DNS, 4 of which DNF) Age Groupers: 2143 (46 of which DNS, 136 of which DNF) |

I find that surprising because I would assume Whistler would be more popular that penticton, but I guess not.

That's very strange. I wonder why the huge discrepancy between that blog and the Official Ironman site? Without any source or corroboration I would be inclined to trust the official site though.
A probable explanation for the difference is that the Ironman site only lists participants that checked in at the venue on friday, so the 46 DNS's are people that dropped out between friday and sunday. |

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Canada : Official Thread The DNS rate for every IM hovers between 15-20%. I did Whistler last year and I'm pretty confident the athlete guide and race week literature/meetings said 2500-2600 participants. There were more than 46 DNS in my AG alone. |

Wow that's crazy, 15% seems rediculously high. I know injuries and just life sometimes get in the way but wow 500+ people per Ironman race?!
Well based on that then yes this years ~2000 is pretty low. |

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Canada : Official Thread Take the Syracuse 70.3 yesterday. Nearly 2400 were registered and there were only 1775 finishers. Probably less than 100 DNF's so the DNS number was about 500 and 70.3 races tend to be more localized and regional with less of a DNS rate than IM races. |

Not trying to give you a hard time or dispute what you are saying, just trying to understand the discrepancy...
The difference is that for the Syracuse race the official ironman site matches what you are saying (more or less). From ironman.com: Participants: 2316 Finishers: 1832 DNS: 456 DNF: 49 DQ: 14
So why does the official ironman site match the numbers you are quoting for Ironman Syracuse but not for Ironman Canada? |

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Canada : Official Thread The passage of time. You'll notice that older results (results from previous seasons) lack a lot of detail in the results. Notice there are no splits for any of the times and things like that. The results right after the race were much more detailed and that's when RunTri did their analysis and got their numbers. At some point IM does a scrub of the numbers. Look at Syracuse's results for last year. It just says 1578 for 2013 and if you scroll through the data there are barely any DNS'ers. The few DNS'ers in there were probably race day DNS'ers that picked up their packet but didn't race for some reason. It doesn't include the 300-400 other people that were DNS and never showed up at all. I was at Syracuse last year and the announced field was close to 2000 but only 1578 people picked up their chip and show up in the results. Same with IMC 2013. 2171 picked up their chip. The other 400-500 were complete no shows and while listed in the athlete guide and race day tracker, no longer show up anywhere. Make sense? |

You said that past seasons results lack splits and other details, but from everything I see that is not the case. I see the same details in the current results as the previous results. So that means that according to your theory Ironman removes most of the DNS's after a certain period of time, but that is the only thing they remove? Unless I'm missing something that, of course, makes no sense. My theory, backed up by everything I see online, is that up to the end of last year they only listed the participants that checked in, as of the beginning of this year they began listing all participants (and everything else remained the same). |

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. Last year's results basically only show the 'Official Results" (for at least my two examples of IMC and Syr70.3) so all DNS's (non-check ins) were removed sometime post race. My athlete guide for IMC 2013 has 2600-something names in it. I just looked. You may be right in how they're doing it this year. |

Another question: When do we know our bib numbers? I recall from years past that we knew that by now, no? |

Veteran 2297 Great White North | Subject: RE: Ironman Canada : Official Thread The start line in the water is very very wide. Its a deep water start over 100 metres from shore so a th start would not work. There is a crossover point when the front of the field finishes lap 2 and the weak swimmers are finishing lap 1. The faster swimmers had to cut through the slower ones to get to the finish segment. Waves would make that a major issue. |

When swimmers finish the first lap, do they come out of the water and re-enter, or do you just keep going on lap 2? My understanding is that some IMs that have two laps require swimmers to exit, cross a timing mat, and then re-enter. Wasn't sure how this one works. Appreciate any comments. Thanks |
