I also deal with a lot of fisherman from the area and from what I'm hearing from them is that Offats is pretty safe from being contaminated, and it would take a serious change in wind with tide movement to effect it now. Not scientific I know but it seems like everythings going to work out for us. |

From what I've heard on the new the port is back up and running and fully operational. The same goes for the surrounding beaches. Nothing has been mentioned or written about a swim cancel as of yet. I'm would encourage everyone to prep and plan as if nothing ever happened. Don't get psyched out, the swim is still on. I will do this......... |

I am not sweating it one way or the other, I am ready for the swim, but will do the race even if the swim is cancelled. I just think that a little more communication in a situation like this one would be appropriate. I wonder if they know or believe it will be cancelled but are not saying so in order to ensure that Moody Gardens and other hotels don't lose reservations / Galveston loses dollars. (Scratching each others backs) If you don't think there will be a problem with having the swim then why not just say that as well. It could be something as simple as, Right now the oil does not seem to have affected Offats Bay and the swim is likely, but please understand that this could change with conditions. I just really don't understand why nothing is being said. Once again it does not matter to me one way or the other, but for some who are traveling, doing a first, using it as a training day, I could see this silence as being a problem for them. |

Besides, I like this uncertainty! How boring would it be if we just showed up and raced? No other race in the world has been threatened by an oil spill but this one. Calm cross wind on the way out and then it shifts to a SE tailwind between 8:00 and 9:00am. |

Looks like it will push us on the way out and possibly shift to a cross wind on the way back (depending on how soon your wave starts). My wave goes at 8:00 so I should avoid the head wind after the turnaround for the most part. |

A N wind would mind mostly crosswinds (with a very slight tailwind the first half and headwind the second). A NNE wind would mean some more tailwind the first half and headwind the second half. A NE wind would mean a very miserable second half but a very fast first half. A N wind is also going to make the swim a lot choppier. Edited by GMAN 19030 2014-04-04 8:08 AM |

Ironman St. George 2012. Swim started in near perfect conditions. 10 minutes into the swim all hell broke lose when 40-50 mph gusts whipped threw the canyon and caused mass chaos. Hundreds of people didn't finish the swim. |

Hundreds of people didn't finish the swim. Are you kidding! I'm sure they would have pulled my hind parts out of the water as well. There is no way I would every been able to finish a swim like that. I think I did great in Galveston considering that 1 1/2 years ago my swim form was nearly non-existent. I'm a self taught swimmer and this was an incredible challenge for me. Nearly got sick from all of the salt water I ingested. So I'll be looking forward to receiving my brass ball in the mail from the Ironman foundation. LOL |

The rest of the race was near perfect for me as far as the weather goes. My front tire blew going around a corner near mile 53 and I wiped. Still changing the road rash bandages every 6-8 hours. Finished the race with a strong run and met all my goals for the day. This was my second 70.3 and but first Ironman event. It's very possible I'll be back at Galveston next year! |

On the third stop I decided to change the tube. I took about 45 mins off my total bike time. After that I burned up my legs trying to make up time, my legs were dead for the run. Note to self: No matter what save your legs for the run, you'll need them. Living in North Texas the weather kept me from a lot of training outdoors due to the frigid temps and conditions. That being said, I'm moving back to Arizona where I have my eyes set on Ironman Arizona next November. I'll have plenty time and the ability to train year round for that one. I may be able to get back to Galveston to redeem my self. |
