You are funny! Thanks for that advice! So glad I could join your group! I am in Mableton - pretty close to Vinings. I also teach in Sandy Springs at Ridgeview Middle School - close to Dunwoody... but I just moved here 3 years ago from Cocoa Beach, FL. I am still discovering new areas of Atlanta... but I love it here!

run4yrlif - 2007-05-17 9:31 AM

Always room for Aimees...I have one of my own, and you guys are awesome. So welcome! Wher ein ATL do you live? I grew up there...Roswell/Dunwoody. After we got married we had an apartment in Vinings, and then a house in Druid Hills (still my favorite neighborhood of all time).

Here's my first piece of advice: don't breath in the water. Turn your head, and then breath. No charge for that.

AimeeTeach - 2007-05-16 5:19 PM If there is still room I'd like to join your group! I am 3 weeks into training for some sprint tri's this year... I live in ATlanta and have always played tennis, but am ready to try something new! I am sure I will survive the run and bike at this point, but I am really working on the swim right now. I have asthma so I have to keep telling myself to breath in the water... and I keep my inhaler at the edge of the pool - HA! Okay - I will post more later if you have room for me... Aimee

Thanks Jim,
I am glad to have made the cut.
HELLO TO EVERYONE IN THE GROUP!
Next week I will start doing some easy bricks as you suggested. It is a beautiful, windy day today here in Chicago and I can not resist - I have to go for an easy run.

The first tri went really well.  It was the Mullet Man right on the beach border of Florida and Alabama.   It had a 400 open water swim, 17 mile bike and 4 mile run.  I did it in 1:34:42.  The areas I really need to work on I think are the transitions.  I could really learn to save a lot of time there.  Aside from that, It was a great time.  I'm also really glad to be in a group now.  Thanks.

I'm relieved and excited! I was looking at my email account & all the Subject lines said the group was closed but I went up to the forums and my name is on the list. Thanks, Jim 14 people is a bunch, but if we all make our fitness goals and develop new friendships it will be very rewarding.

Swimming, I enjoy swimming I'm just very slow, I picked the name Pollywog because this is what Mr. Westpoint officer called me when I was practiced at the Kingston, NY YMCA for my lifeguarding test. The swim lanes were crowded. I was practicing all my strokes and he was trying to intimidate me into leaving the swim lanes. He said hey Pollywog swim lessons are held in the morning blah, blah, blah, I think He and the lifeguard on duty thought I was crazy when I told him I was going to be there 3 times per week until I could pass the lifeguarding test. 14 years later I am still a Pollywog but soon will be a superfrog.

Bismarck Tri swim is 500 yards of open water in sheltered man-made bay off the Missouri river main channel. Water temp is 68 degrees as of last week. I do not have a wet suit. This is my first open water swim, Navigation shouldn't be a problem the bay is probably 30 yards wide at current Missouri River water levels. Fear of drowning still a problem but water depth averages about 5 ft. according to my 2nd hand info.
The swim coach I had contacted moved to Fargo so I am currently looking for coach in Bismarck. I was looking at ordering the Total Immersion DVD or if you have suggestions for other DVDs.

Our dog Kenai broke a toe nail two days ago & now has a cone on his head & has to be hand fed. I'm 210 miles away from home working on Cyclone Rig 18 so my wife is not happy.

OK... I've come up for air long enough to write my bio... but add me to the list of asthmatics around here so I'll keep my inhaler handy .

NAME: milaminute/Mila  (it's pronounced MY-la)
STORY: I live in the Atlanta suburbs... moved here from Maryland about 6 years ago.  I'm at home with my kids but I dabble in teaching spin classes and have a private educational consulting business.  As far as mulitsport... many of the participants in my spin classes are triathletes, and they have been encouraging me for years to get out there and tri.  Apparently, I listened.  I have been a recreational cyclist for some time, but when we moved to the ATL I turned in my road bike for a mountain bike, so it's been an adventure getting back to my roadie roots and I'm still not quite used to my new bike.  As a former competitive figure skater, my balance and flexibility are solid but not much else from that translates well into the S/B/R thing (though sassy outfits are available for all of the above).  I'm truly a newbie.  When I started training in January, I struggled to swim 50 meters and I hadn't run a mile in a very long time.
FAMILY STATUS: I'm married to John (who is interested in Adventure Racing!) and have three kids... Kate is 9, Colin is 6 and Luke is not quite 2 but somehow has missed the memo on that as he feels certain he can keep up with the big kids.
CURRENT TRAINING: I'm on the "I work at a gym and have difficulty balancing my training" plan.  While that sounds silly, I'm actually quite serious.  Because my job requires a lot of physical activity, avoiding overtraining and finding time to train myself instead of others is a challenge.  I have a swim coach (she rocks) and two well-qualified friends who volunteered to be running coaches because they couldn't pass up such a huge challenge great opportunity.  I ride either indoors or outdoors 6+ times a week, run 3 times (but I'm limited in my running distance due to some joint issues) & try to hit the pool at least 3 times a week.
2007 RACES: I'm registered for my first tri (Ryka Iron Girl) which is *gasp* a month from today.   My goal is to get through that without dying.  If all goes well, I'm planning on the Acworth Women's Tri in August and the Peachtree City in September.

I think the TI DVDs will be great. They're (in my opinion at least) excellent for teaching "poor" swimmers. If you use them and incorporate the drills into your swimming, you should improve immensely. And speaking of swimming...I checked your logs and you're not doing much of it...

So is that an oil rig?

Milaminute...I get it...

So it sounds like you have a great support system--and it's excellent that you're working with a swim coach. I think you'll find tht the balance you have from figure skating will help with your swimming, though.

I'll see you at Irongirl! My wife is doing the race and I may volunteer...

Did a 6 mile lunch run today around the Northside Hospital area. Very hilly...both ways amazingly (but no snow). My time wasn't what I would want but it was alot hillier (if that is a word) than the Peachtree. I realize I probably need to go to Big Peach Running to get a better analysis of my "running stroke". I don't think I run efficiently/correctly. It results in a muscle cramp in my very lower right back (just above the buttock) that doesn't seem to go away. Does anyone else experience this? Are there certain stretches I should do before that would help this?

I was having SERIOUS back pain last summer by the end of the summer and tried massages and stretching and such and finally went to a chiropractor. Within 2 weeks the pain was gone. This was after quite some time of trying the other options. My pain was very lower left back. Have you ever had chiropractic care? I was pretty skeptical before I went but I can't be now. =)

Funny you mention that. I went to see a chiropractor just to see what it was like a few months ago. It was nice to get your back cracked, but I felt like it was a one treatment fits all, three cracks and he is done thing. I didn't think I was getting anything out of it so I quit seeing him. Maybe I should go back and see if they can help. They also called me everyday to try to get me to come in so I felt like it was a little shady, but it is in my office building. I will go back and mention that specific need and see what they can do to help. Thanks for the tip.

It did feel WORSE right after the adjustments at first and it took a few weeks of going 3 times/week for me to feel better. I just kept going b/c I wanted to REALLY try it before I went to a Dr. =) Good luck!

I find that the Chiro is limited... I found that once they got me "straightened" out (pun intended) I still had to go back once a month for adjustments. Yes... it does take a few weeks of going 2 - 3x a week to get everything to stay aligned. It wasn't until I saw a Physiotherapist, and was given the proper back exercises to strengthen the muscles around the spine, that I saw some success. I think a good chiro and PT together should be able to get you "back" on track.

Kev

Not much swimming is correct, The Community Center pool was drained for spring cleaning when I was back home. The nearest pool to me is 110 miles away in Dickinson, ND no excuse but the ponds are to cold to swim in this early in the spring.
Cyclone 18 is an oil drilling rig. Currently we are at 14211' measured depth. We have lost pressure in the wellbore for some unknown reason. No pressure means no drilling. We are supposed to drill out to 18,100' measured depth.
I look at the rock samples to make sure the wellbore is in the correct rock layer. We also monitor associated gas, methane, propane, butane & isobutane. We also use a Gamma tool to make sure we are in the correct zone. The target zone for this well is 3 ft. thick. Red River Upper B porosity. Sorry this is probably very boring.

If you don't think you run efficiently, try this: count your strides for one minute. You should be taking ~180/minute. Overstriding causes lots of problems because when you extend your leg too far in front of you, you intiate a braking response and that transmits force to your knee, hip and back.

Also, low back on one side is sometimes cause by weakness, or strength imbalnces in your hip flexors. When you have weak hip flexors, as you become fatigued you tend to drop your hip when you swing your leg through. And when you drop your hip, you apply torsional forces to your low back.

Does that make sense?

So it's not an off-shore rig? I was going to say if you were at an offshore rig, you could just swim off the side of the platform...

That does make sense.  I feel like I am slinging my legs forward not striding.  I will try the stride count on my next run and see how I measure out as well.  Good tips.  My knees are definitely swollen/stiff after the run.  I think I will spin during lunch to get some of that worked out and try to do a bigger bike ride this weekend.

JBD,
My experience is doing the hip flexor strenghtening works for me. I also started to do a lower back exersice that is the opposite of a cruncher that seems to help.
I also like the Chiro. I barrel rolled my pick-up on I-94 back in 2004(5 times according to witnesses). The chiro definitely helped.
