Kerry, I know the rivers/lagoons in so cal and I would be totally freaked out. But since it is man made and Disney it *might* be clean. Yikes! I would check it out ahead of time.

So I think it's totally gross, and then I went to the registration page and they shortened the run to 2 miles and that sealed the deal on me not doing this one (and shortened the bike to 9 miles i think. Lame. not paying $100 for that, especially since the Disneyland factor is a drawback rather than an incentive.... seems like people are really into it being at Disney so I guess it's just me who thinks that's pretty stupid, especially since you can't even bring people to watch unless they want to pay the entrance fee. Anyway, that's my rant for today.

I had a longgg run today and immediately followed it up with a chocolate ice cream cone- am not sure that it qualifies as a great recovery food but I'd run 10 miles anyday if the run ended at the ice cream shop- so I highly recommend it!!

I DESTROY ALL ICE CREAM!!!

Sounds like that triathlon is set up pretty crappily. I would avoid it as well.

What a bummer on that tri.  That could have, and should have been a very cool race.  Shame on the organizers for totally dropping the ball.

Sadly, all ice cream destroys me

A couple of weeks ago I ate so much ice cream in one sitting, I woke up the next morning and told my wife that I was pretty sure that I had given myself diabetes. My current favorite is Ben and Jerry's "everything but the".

NYT has a lot of articles about triathlon, don't they? I agree with everything here and I think that most people would, too. If you want to run your best 1/2 marathon or marathon you need to run buckets of miles with very little cross-training--just enough for injury prevention. I don't know that anyone expects to run their best 1/2 marathon as part of an HIM.

Incidentally, I saw Desiree Ficker (who is quoted in the article) run at the Olympic trials. I yelled out "Go Ficker!!" as she went by and she heard me and smiled so I think we are pretty much dating now.

NY Times loves triathlon, from what I can tell. yesterday they had a whole article about tri shoes. Which pretty much confirmed what I thought- not a great way to spend $ when you have good shoes already...

Sometimes i wish ice cream made me ill-- then (maybe) I wouldn't eat so much of it :-)

Had my first swim in open water this weekend. I went camping so I brought my wet suit with me. The water was very cold but once I got moving it was ok. My face was the coldest part, hands and feet were ok. I found that I got tired way to quick, not sure if i was just going to fast or what but I did enjoy it so I will be going back in soon.

Sweet!  May have just been the cold water or adrenaline of the first OWS that got to you so quick.  I still have yet to get in the OW.  I'm jealous.

The race weekend went perfect.
I took Friday off work to drive to Ottawa so I wouldn`t have to rush getting there. It`s about a 5 hour drive without stopping, however I stopped along the way. Once, for coffee, then I met up with my parents (they were camping the week prior and ending it at Ottawa). We stopped for lunch in a nice little town an hour outside Ottawa. Altogether it took us 7 hours.
On Saturday we went into Ottawa, picked up the race kit and walked around downtown. We went back to our campsite in the afternoon as it had an indoor swimming pool and my kids wanted to go swimming. I went for a lite jog and then joined them in the pool. We went to my cousins` house for dinner.
The race had a 9:00 start (which I really like) the full mara started at 7:00). Having done this race last year and reviewing the race map I was ready. I started looking for my coral and I was quite shocked at how close to the start line I was. It took 34 seconds to get to the start. I had written in marker on the back of my hand the 3 goals I had to hit (5, 11 and 16 km times). I`ve tried the wrist bands but they never work well once the get covered in sweat and water. The first KM I was way too fast, under 4:00 min, then by km 5 I was more then a minute under my time that I required. My wife, kids and parents were near the 11km marker so I was pleased when I was able to see them. My dad took some good pics, I will post them.
The race started to get hard around the 14km point mentaly, so I just focussed on getting to the 16 km marker on time, after I did that I knew it was all flat to the finish line. The last 750 meters was tough and my heart rate sky rocketed to 105%. My avaerage for the race was very high as well, 94%.
Post race, I grab my food and drinks and started looking for a place to stretch, the legs were and still are sore.
We went back to the camp site where my parents had to leave, after saying good bye I went for a swim with the boys.
On Monday we had to pack in the rain, then we all went for another swim before we left for the long ride home.
I was pleased with my time 1:39:04 and the fact that I placed 541 out of 8300 ish.
Thanks for all your support guys.

nice race!! that's a great time and place!

I have a 1/2 this coming weekend, shooting to break 2 hours, we'll see how that goes :-) my last 1/2 I did way more speedwork that this one- this time I followed the whole "just focus on the long runs and forget everything else" plan. all my long runs have gone really well so here's hoping that it's good enough to chop the 6 minutes or so off my time... if not, at least I know I am going to have a fabulous lunch anyway- the race is up outside San Francisco and my favorite restaurant is near the course :-)

Nathan--Does this mean that you need to retest your HR zones? If you are going much past 100%, it would seem that your zone estimates may be low. I don't know that much about HR training so I will ask around.

Question, when you say your HR was 105%, does that mean it was 105% of your resting heart rate?  In other words, double your resting HR? Or does that mean it was 5% over your max HR?
