Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had a pretty busy weekend and I think the week is going to be just as busy. My youngest daughter has soccer games and track meets for the next 3 days, so my evenings are going to be shot. I should be able to work around it but it'll be rough. I'll have a day when I have 2 disciplines to workout but I can spread them out a little. I am glad I got a swim and a run in yesterday or I wouldn't be able to get all my workouts in this week. I am also tapering for my first half marathon of the year. So my run workouts are pretty easy and not as long. During my long run on Sunday I started thinking about fueling during my tri's this season. If you can't remember I hafe not done a tri yet and I am not sure how to plan fuel during an oly distance, which could be my fist tri ever. I am looking for some thoughts about how each of you deal with this during races. Including what products you use and how much of each is used? When to use it? and why you use those items? Again I am ignorant about fueling altogether for a tri. For the half mary's I've done, I use a power gel 10-15 min before the race and about mile 5-6 during the race. This seems to work decent but I have only done 3 halfs with the first one not using them at all and one of them running nursing an injury so I wasn't trying to crush anything. Ideas? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() how long are you plannig on being out there for the oly (roughly?) 2:30-3 hour, i would shoot for 100-200 on the bike, and water/sports drink as needed on teh run. its not a wildly long race and you can do it on nothing, or a very small amount. personally, i take in 1 or 2 gels, and just water OR a weak sports drink (normally HEED) with roughly 150 cal in it. run is whatever sounds good/i can get down. Personally, i prefer GU or Hammer for gels, Hammer for drinks. HEED has been by far my fav drink for the past 3 years. |

I'll do shot blocks on the bike during a moderate effort and gels/gatorade on the run because I can just wash it down and keep moving. |

My estimate would be a 30 minute swim (500 TT's at 7:30-ish), 1:10:00 bike (recent 24.9 miles 1:25) and the run I estimated an 8:00 mile pace that would leave me at 49 minutes. I am not sure how any of it would work out for me but I would rather have something attainable for my first tri than set the bar to high and "crash and burn." |

I am not sure how any of it would work out for me but I would rather have something attainable for my first tri than set the bar to high and "crash and burn." Yeah...I tried to play the numbers game in my first tri. It was only a sprint (750m, 11.3 miles, 3.6 miles)...but I was hoping for 16 minute swim, 35 minute bike, 30 minute run, and 3 minutes in transition....which made my goal roughly 1:25. I ended up doing a ~18 minute swim, ~32 minute bike, ~29 minute run, and ~2 minutes in transition...for roughtly 1:21:xx. In my upcoming olympic, I'm hoping for a 32:00 swim, 1:10:00 bike, 55:00, and 4:00 in transitions...so about 2:40ish. But really...anything under 2:50 is a success. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I did an LT test on the drainer today. Followed an instructional dvd (spinervals) and need some help interpreting my numbers into training zones. It was an all out 20 minutes. My avg HR was 167, max HR 180. Anyone want to take a stab at it? |

![]() I have an A race coming up on May 16th...and Oly. There's another race 8 days before it...a sprint. It's only $40...can you believe that. It's on a military base...and catered towards military (active mil is like $30), so I guess that's why its so cheap...don't need to pay OT to police or pay for permits, etc. Anyway...I was planning to taper down a bit the week before my Oly anyway...do you think racing hard 8 days before is a good idea. I took me about 3 days to fully recover from my first sprint. |

Anyone want to take a stab at it? You can do it yourself using the BT heart-rate zone calculator (settings-> training log settings -> manage your heart rate zones. Some further help here, but it is pretty straightforward: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=926 I think you would use LT method and plug in 167. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi All! Most of your questions are beyond my current knowledge - sorry! I am learning though and soaking in all of the good voodoo! Did my first Bric today though - after a 1:15 bike w/ hills and a gruesome head wind on the way back, I then ran 18 minutes. I think I now know what it would feel like if I was a pirate with 2 peg legs and someone told me to run! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() try and hit all the questions here: On the LT test, the BT plan one is a good way to getnumbers to work with (link posted above). On the race fuel, i tried accelagel once, prob one of about two brands i cannot stand at all. For more solid options, cliff shot blocks if you like the flavor are good, but i really like sport beans (think jelly bean made out of gatorade), or the powerbar chews (they are awesome), in coke or lemon. For all those racing olympics, i am doing my first in two years in june!! (everything has been sprints or HIM distance for the most part over the last few years). Shooting for a 21min swim, 1:00 on theb ike, 38 min run. We'll see how that goes though. |

I just got a pair of zoot advantage shoes and tried them out for about 5 miles. The left shoe was perfect...the right shoe was rubbing the inner part below my ankle where there is some stitching. I got a minor blister...but not bad overall. Still debating whether or not I should go sockless for my Oly on May 16th. I made the switch a few months ago. I train and race sockless in Zoots and I also train and race mostly sockless in my Shimano road shoes. For the bike, I can do either or no matter what and not have any problems. After about 4-5 miles in my Zoots I get some rubbing on my left arch and on my right ball. I have experimented many times, but I just concluded that it's just the uniqueness of my feet and shoes. To remedy this, I just smear a little glob of vaseline on my shoes where the hotspots are before I slip my feet into them. I do this before every run and race. It feels great and totally eliminates any friction. The vaseline builds op on the shoe after a while which eliminates friction on shorter runs where I just don't apply any beforehand. I tried running with socks twice in my Zoots and it resulted in several blisters on my toes. I find that the shoes do an awesome job of wicking moisture away from my feet, but when worn with socks, it is a disaster. I also run sockless in them in pretty cold temperatures and I've never had problems with cold feet(no pun intended). |

The blister I got is almost healed...it was very small...actually more like a cut than a blister. Once it heals I'll give it another go. I'll also try going sockless in my cycling shoes...but bring a pair of socks with me just in case...LOL. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My HRM came in the mail today - yeah! I purchased the Polar F7 - anyone else have one? It is very basic no GPS. I was looking at another Polar HRM (the RS400) - it has a feature that can tell you what your VO2max is at rest - does that sound like BS to anyone else b/c it sounded too good to be true (or accurate!). Also the RS400 doesn't come in women's sizing and decided not to have a huge hunking watch on my arm. I hope everyone is having a great week and getting lots accomplished! (not to keep bitchin' but yeah it is snowing again.) |

![]() Anyone use the Profile Design front aero drink. I started using mine, but the only issue I have is the straw. It's super stiff, and basically pokes my face everytime I drop into aero. But if I cut it down, it becomes too short to drink from. I could...but I have to bend my head down and totally take my eyes off the road ahead. Is there an extension you can buy for the main straw that is more flexible...sort of like how the speedfil tube is? I just don't want to poke my eye out. |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i had the aero drink for about a month but sold it, i went back to the regular one frame bottle. maybe check around at the store and see if you can find something, walmart might have tubing of some sort, or an aquarium store (for tank cleaning). |

What do you use on your long training rides? Rear mounted cages? I don't care for the aero drink now that I have used it...too much splashing...etc. But I don't really have an option. I only can carry one bottle on my frame, and my seat post is not compatible with rear mounting brackets...or at least anything my tri shop had. If you look back a couple pages at the pic of my bike, you'll see it doesn't have the two holes in the seat post to mount the bracket. Can you have those drilled? The seat is also so far forward that you can't mount to the seat rails. I suppose I could zip tie a cage to my aero bars and do a torpedo mount and a frame mount. |
|
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() a lens cap (check on the size) from a camera will fit the aero bottle, just cut a hole for teh straw, or use a shower lufa (sp?). that works abotu a millions times better than the yellow one it comes with. that said, i HATE HATE HATE rear bottle launchers. For training i stuff bottles as needed in my rear jersey pockets. You can fit 3 in there if you need to;-) normally its one on the frame, one on the bike. unless its 95 degrees out this will get my through jsut under 3 hours, and if its colder, 3-3:30 no issues. will stop and refill if needed. longer races its just the one frame bottle. |
![]() ![]() |
Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I used the rear bottle cages for a while... (never launched a bottle on the awesome chicago roads). They do make them compatible to mount around the rails of your seat. They clamp down on them. I used a seat post mounted one. My LBS gave me some of their cages and bottles so I put them on my frame and ended up liking them more. If you really wanted to you could get an aero bottle for your frame if you wanted to stay aero. They say that using standard frames doesnt make a huge impact on the bike. Also in last months triathlete magazine... gear and bike review version... they noted the torpedo mount system that you noted using zip ties. Check it out. Edited by Thomasski 2010-04-29 12:15 AM |

A friend of mine told me that washing your running shoes in the washer is bad for the shoes. I'm not sure if that is true. I wash my shoes if they are too old/worn down to wear them on the runs. But I have not passed to sockless yet. I'm planning on trying it too. |
