Judi, glad to hear that you have come through both the earthquake and hurricane in one piece.  Hope the power wont be out too long.

My daughter and SIL just moved south of DC a month ago.  After 4 years in california they experienced the biggest earthquake in VA.  And now in one week, not only the earthquake, but a hurricane.  I wonder what my four grandkids are thinking of this new place they moved to.

D001 - 2011-08-23 9:15 PM So VANibbs, where were you when the earthquake hit?

Well, I was nowhere near it.

What? You aren't a VANibbs? Who knew..... Of course, they've all forgotten the earthquake by now. They're getting ready for the hurricane.....

Well, I was in the kitchen getting a little snack....my daughter thought she would "stand by the hutch in case anything falls"  I had to remind her that if anything fell it would be ON her.  Other daughter was babysitting......long story on that situation.  Let's just say that "mother of the year" did not call to check on her 3 kids or mine....Once we got ahold of Miss Thing we called mother of the year to let her know all was well.......And te cops who are doing a stakeout a couple houses down from where mother of the year lives checked on them since they knew a teenager was home with 3 kids under 10.

So there's a big earthquake, and the kids' mother didn't call the babysitter (your daughter) to find out if her kids (and their babysitter) were OK? Yep, she's sure mother of the year material.... Sheesh. I sure hope she was doing *something* majorly important. (Like lying on an operating table under general anesthesia....) PLUS, there was a stakeout going on a couple of houses down from where your daughter was babysitting? Wow. How did your daughter handle all this?
My daughter did well.....I don't know if the Mom couldn't get through to call or didn't bother to call.....when we got ahold of my daughter we did call mother to let her know that all were okay.....mother works at the base commisary....whoop de do

I'm home!  Nothing bad while on vacation - a little rain, but not as much as had I been at home.  Still no power for me at home, although work has it.  They are opening the gym to let people shower there, which is really nice.  I wish I'd known that before I took a cold shower at home this morning!

It is summer, although without power and air conditioning, Virginia can be pretty miserable in the summer.  Our power came back on Wednesday night, for which I am extremely grateful.  I have friends who are still without and I think Judi might also not have power yet.

I think Heather is in Utah, but I might be mis-remembering.

Cat, I think Heather is to Jen & Judi kind of like how you are to Perth. (Ie: there's a really large distance inbetween.)

Jen & Judi, have you been keeping an eye on Katia? If it doesn't turn north, it'll be headed towards you....

I think Lee will be visiting Kendra and Mila. (And then maybe me.)

Yeah, I've been watching Katia.  It's kind of scary that power hasn't been restored in the whole city yet and we could be getting hit again in a few days.  At this point, we aren't working on replacing all the food we lost in the fridge/chest freezer just in case.

Hey, cool! The picture isn't 'static.' It changes every time the NHC (National Hurricane Center) updates it.

I see they've moved the path more 'northeast' than it was yesterday. Looks now like it'll stay off the coast.

Oh, Dee, so not helping!  They're already forecasting at least 3 inches of rain tomorrow for Tropical Storm Lee.

No no -- it's a better picture now. Really!

When I first posted it, Katia was aimed right at Cape Hatteras, and then headed into VA Beach. Now, they're showing it making a turn north before it hits land.

As for Lee, so far, there hasn't been much rain here yet. (I'm hoping I didn't just jinx myself on that one. LOL We're still under a tornado watch, and a flash flood watch....)

I guess it's better.  It still makes me worried!

We have gotten a ton of rain and thunderstorms yesterday and today.  There's supposed to be more rain all week.
