The Cube - 2011-09-08 3:50 PM You guys might have covered this BUT....Whats the word on volunteers signing up for the 2012 event? Do we get priority before general entry opens...etc? Signed up for Bike Check-In on Fri, 10-3pm.

They usually have two lines...first to go in is volunteers then when they are done everyone else line gets to register.

Thanks for volunteering!

Here's a question about ocean swimming. Most of my open water swims have been in rivers or lakes. The water has always been fairly calm. A couple weeks ago I made it to Ft. Lauderdale. I did a little ocean swimming, but since I didn't have a support boat I swam along the shore. I stayed out past where the waves were breaking, but it still felt as if I was getting beat up. Since we will be swiming .6 miles out from shore before turning around, instead of swimming along the shoreline, does it ever feel any calmer or do I need to mentally prepare for the swim to feel like a lot bigger struggle than my other swims?

Good Question! - I' anxious to hear the responses.... I've swam in a lake, pool and once like you along the shore.

Could be almost anything depending on the wind on that particular day.  I have done IMFL 4 times and Gulf coast once (Same venue) and between pre-race swimming and swimming the year I volunteered I have probably swum the venue at least a dozen times.  Might be pancake flat or 5-6 foot waves.  Best advice I can give you is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Just finished up my first successful 2 mile ocean swim race today which was a huge confidence booster.  I had to get over the mental block/fear of dealing with waves....there were a few rows of waves had to get through but once out there it was pretty easy to just let the waves roll under you...if that makes any sense.  I am really glad I had the chance to not only swim in waves but salt water...such a difference compared to lake swimming!

I have been using strong visulization skills while swimming on a Totalgym.... Imagining rough water and people all around me... I know this is no comparison to the real thing but using the power of the mind I think you can experience anything without really being there...

Socks - 2011-09-10 6:13 PM  Geez o pete I am toaster caked

OK, what is toaster caked?

Don't even know what it is but I feel it.  Finished my 2nd of back to back long rides with totally different results.  106 miles last weekend, 104 this weekend.  But, last week I felt pretty good off the bike and had a decent 40 min run even though the ride was a little faster.  This week I had to cut the run short because a) I was really beat and 2) my stomach was not doing too good. I really didn't want to puke on the side of the road on a training run.

The difference is, besides 2 long rides 2 weeks in a row is I tried Perpetuem and it didn't sit well.  Had a little last week but this week I tried to fuel almost the entire ride with it. By mile 85 I was getting real tired and couldn't even think of taking another drink of that stuff nor a gel at that point.  I am going back to gels, Gatorade, PB&J and other assorted goodies.   Experiment complete

Easier bike rides the next 2 weeks due to a sprint on Sunday then Augusta next weekend.

enjoy all,

Duane

It's likely the protein in the Perpetuem that is creating your stomach issues.  Many people have the same problem, including me.  Fortunately, you don't really need protein during an event.  Just find a drink that gives you enough calories/carbs and electrolytes and you're good.

I agree with prepare for the worst and hope for the best.  Last year was looking downright scary in the two days leading up to the race.  Winds were kicking and the waves were rough.  It settled down to okay on race morning and the next day was like glass.

A lot of the waves are surface waves which look bad but don't impede your forward progress as much as you would think.  Worry more about the waves you can't see that are just below the surface.  Those are the waves that make you feel like you're swimming and not going anywhere.

Also remember that IMFL is a two loop course so you'll potentially have to fight waves twice.  The current will also change from your first loop to your second.  I found the current on the second loop to be worse than the first last year, which was reflected by my swim splits of 31 and 34 minutes with the same RPE (and the first loop included the mass start traffic jams and full contact fighting).

I think you need a little intake of protein for the length of an Ironman,,, the muscles need some recovery over that period of time..  The effects of the protein is an individual thing...Perpetuem is Soy (vegan) where as other products have Whey (dairy)...

I feel a lot stronger for a longer period of time when I trickle in a good Carb/Protein balance.  I have been using the Perpetuem powder mix along with Hammer Gels, Enduralytes mixed with FRS powdered drink mix on the bike and use Perpetuem Solids, Hammer Gels and FRS chews on the run with super results.

I think that some people have an intollerance to it and should then just stick to what works best for them.  Good luck.....

I have tried perpetuem in the past and I did ok on it. I have just recently discovered infinite nutrition. Holy cow what a difference. All. Have to remember is to drink. The last century I did that is all I used and it rocked. I had to bump up some of my calories because I was starving after, but that was my first formula configuration and I learned what I needed to do. I use to suffer from cramps real bad and I was doing endurolytes and gels and Gatorade and everything and I could not seem to get the cramps under control. When I started with the infinite i have not had a single cramp. Bike or run. I have gotten much better about making sure I drink every 10 min on the bike and every mile on the run. Not to sound like a commercial but this stuff works for me. I carry gel and endurolytes just in case but have not used any since switching. Simple for me is always better. I hope everyone is training well

Other difference in first loop and second is where you start....second loop starts from when you cross swim exit, walk on the beach and diagonal portion to swim buoy which is longer than where you start first loop. If you look at the swim map you can see distance is longer for second loop due to where you start.

I finished my 2nd HIM this Sunday.  I improved my time from 5:36 to 5:09.  But I also suffered the consequences of pushing hard.  I am sore has heck and possibly did the HIM with a quad strain or Femur stress fracture.  Its hard to tell because I am self diagnosing from symptoms I had before the race.  I can't tell now because I am sure I am just sore from the race.   I was planning on swimming tomorrow and light bike this week but I might just stick to swimming starting Thursday.  I am going to it is easy even though the Don Fink plan has me training this week. I'm sure 1 week off isn't going to affect my ironman that much.  If I am not feeling better by Wednesday, I am going to get my quad checked out.

Yikes, I wouldn't push it that's for sure...let your body recover.

Plus as a friend of mine says "better to be undertrained and healthy at the start line then over trained and injured"

I have used their premix but I customized a mix that I love!  I pumped up the calories a bit, some electrolytes, and lowered the taste so I could double and triple the mix without it getting too sweet.

I have tried the premixed formulas and they did not do much for me so I was turned off for a while. I decided to try it again but went to the site and got a customized run and bike formula based off my sweat rate and many other items. Now I swear by it. The web site walks you threw everything. And the phone consult will clear up any other questions you may have. I know it is not for everyone because I have a buddy that went through the whole thing and it did not agree with his system at all. I think it is worth a try.
as long as time allows for some experimenting.

I switched to infinite in the ramp up to imfl 2009. I also fought cramps after 4 to 6 hrs. Infinite has cured those issues to a great extent. It will not help if you do not fuel at all before an 80 mile climbing ride. (I tried) I customized my mix and it has been great. I called and got the nutrionist to help.

another question re: the swim, have jellyfish been a problem in previous years?

and to answer one, I use a custom blend of Infinit, like someone else I dialed down the taste so a 3 hour bottle is not too sweet.

Another vote for customized Inifint.  I just ordered another bag because I'm nearly out.   I swear by it for all long bike and long run.   I also recommend customizing it to a lighter taste so that it can be doubled or even tripled in a water bottle.  I think on the bike I'm going to supplement the calories with Powerbar Performance and maybe a Honey Stinger Waffle (those are addictive!)  I think I'll be putting Infinit in my fuel belt for the run and supplementing that with plain water at the stops; not sure about solids on the run yet.

I haven't read all of the thread, so this may have been covered.  Has everyone figured out your nutrition plan?  How many calories you plan to consume, what exactly you will consume - be it solid and/or liquid, and how to space it out?
