carrie639 - 2012-01-08 5:18 PM Thanks everyone for all of your support! The races were great (I will post more later) and Disney does an outstanding job making everything easy. I am quite terrified how my legs will feel tomorrow as they feel like they have been pulverized! They felt partially pulverized at the start of today ...

Fantastic job, Carrie!  Congratulations!

trilooney - 2012-01-09 6:27 AM Good morning all,Some of you know me, as I was a part of the mentor group over a year ago and dropped off the face of this earth after some complications with my pregnancy.Fast forward a year - I have a beautiful 3 month old baby named Laina, and she is doing wonderfully.Yesterday, with Kelly's support, I ran my first post pregnancy race. I cannot than Kelly and more importantly, her mom (for babysitting), enough!!!!! I really pushed myself, and Kelly being there forced me to push harder than I would have had she not been. My time was essentially one minute per mile slower than my performance at this race last year. I finished in under 27 minutes. So now I'm psyched, but now I am struggling with how to juggle training with working and being a mom to a newborn on an extremely unpredictable eating schedule. Add to that that I am pumping breastmilk for her for 2 hours a day. I need a routine but an on demand feeding schedule makes it extremely hard.At any rate, thanks again to Kelly and Maureen. I'm back. I also stalk this group daily! Great job Carrie!!!!Have a great day!

Welcome back   Congratulations on running your first race post-baby!!  Be careful not to train too much or get dehydrated while breastfeeding (I breastfed for almost 3 of the last 6 years...any questions feel free to PM me ).  When I started exercising, my supply tanked big time.  You can do it; just do it in moderation.  You also might want to double up on sport bras.  Once you're done nursing, the girls get really, really small, and you want to prevent further sagging.  Anyway, I think you can come up with a plan and work it around your schedule, but don't beat yourself up.  You have a newborn!!!!

Morning everyone!

Up this morning to lift and swim.  This week is a rest week so I get my monthly day off tomorrow -- very exciting -- and its an opportunity for me to dial back the calories and carbs to see if I can drop a little weight.  I've been having water retention issues lately.  My weight will flux about 4-6 lbs in a week because of the amount of water I'm carrying.  I'm not sure how to get that number to level off a bit.

What are everyone else's plans for the week?

Speaking of yoga, this is an interesting NYT Article about whether yoga can "wreck your body:"

Goal this week is to get back on schedule with running and swimming. I was under the weather last week so the whole week was basically a wash training wise. Spent the whole weekend doing tri club stuff but didn't end up having time for any real training. I did end up winning Member of the Year for our club at our party on Saturday night. I was very pleasantly surprised as I was not expecting it at all!

Good article.  I don't take traditional yoga.  It's more like yoga for runners.  We go through IT band, hip, knee, core, etc.  Very few inverted poses and seldom head or shoulder stands.  I can see how Joe Public could easily hurt themselves.

Quick Question

I currently have my new less then 300 mile 2011 Cannondale Slice 3 on the trainer. My wife questioned me yesterday about what type of extra unneeded stress or use I may be putting on the bike and asked why I did not have my 2000 Trek 5200 rode bike with who knows how many mailes on it on the trainer.

My justifcation is holding a areo position and the geometery but still 6.6 months from Ironman is that a big deal or is it ok to throw on the rode bike for winter training?

Any Thoughts?

While you want to practice being in aero position, you'll have plenty of time to do so when riding outside.  There's no reason not to use your road bike on the trainer now.

Great job carrie!

I had an exciting day and night yesterday.  Rewind a few days.  I walk in to my bathroon and notice my 3 yr old has flushed an entire roll of toilet paper down the toilet (at least clogged in the toilet).  I work to get everything down and didnt think anything else about it.  Then yesterday my wife goes into our basement and notices it is flooded.  Yep- sewage backed up into our basement.  So I have had to get a plumber to come out today to try and fix it.  Also my 6 yr old woke up last night screaming with an ear infection.  Fun times.

Training wise- I am following Jorges plan and trying to run 5-6 days per week.  my legs are feeling fatigued but I guess that is good.

Yes a few thoughts:

You will do no damage to a carbon bike on the trainer if set up properly.

if your bike's were fit properly, your road bike and TT bike should have very similar body angles, to which it should take little adjustment once the weather warms up to get comfy on the TT bike. All a TT fit should do is move you more forward of the bottom bracket which then allows your WHOLE body to ROTATE forward, keeping hip angle consistent to be able to get into a more aero position.

TT bikes DO NOT use different muscles, a TT bike allows you to be faster because it allows you to become more aero, it allows you to run better because you expend less energy to go the same speed as a non-aero position of a road bike.  Another triathlon myth busted here.

My road and TT bikes are set up almost identically angle wise, I do almost all my rides on my road bikes, and only use the TT bike to get ready for a race and make sure equipment is working properly and racing only. i might put a little more time on it prior to a half, but that is only to get my neck used to being in aero for 2+ hours.

hope this helps!!

edit:  also what Kelly said, there is not reason to not ride the roadie for now, even if the fits are different, you will have plenty of time in the spring with the TT rig, but i totally understand, who does not want to ride their new bike!!!!!! I am sure i would!!

^^^ I agree.  I know "they" say it will not harm your carbon frame, but who are "they"?  Ok, Rudy chimed in but still.  Maybe "they" are right, but I still use my road bike on the trainer and save the tri bike for outside.  I also have a separate wheel set up I use on the road bike & trainer.  I already cooked a nice expensive tire once on the trainer and learned my lesson.  But with it on my road bike I don't have to worry about swapping out anything when it's time to ride outside.

Oh someone else has water retention issues too???  I thought I was the only one.  I have never figured out how to avoid it, and summer time is worse.  All the sweating on the weekend, hydrating, re-hydrating, I can go up and down 10 pounds in a day.  If my ankles are swollen & puffy, I know I'm retaining water.

And forget eating Chinese food.  I swell up like Martin Short in that movie where he got stung by a bee.  It's really not very attractive!

Thanks! It was a surprise especially since our club has 400 members so there are a lot of people who are very involved and were also well qualified for the honor. Didn't get any hardware, I do think there is a prize that goes with the award but not sure yet exactly what it is. We had all had a few drinks at that point and I didn't think to ask. Smile

So inspired by Kelly's marathon idea I signed up to run the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon in June. I'm in town that weekend for a wedding on the Friday, and San Diego is my hometown so I'm really looking forward to running a big race there.

This will be my second stand alone marathon (third marathon overall if you count the IM, which I do!). Goal will be to PR and go sub 5 hours - my first marathon was a 5:20 so it's an aggressive but doable goal. To get there I'll need to drop some weight and run a lot. Plan to follow Hal Higdon's Intermediate 1 plan which will start on January 30th. Feels good to have a big race on the schedule again.

San Diego RnR was my first marathon.  Very fun race, and yes, you do run on a freeway.  You'll really like it.

G'day everyone,

My plans for the week didn't even last one day. My work trip ended up going over schedule so messed up my Monday/Tuesday workouts. The moral of the story, even if you're not planning on doing anything, make sure you bring some running shoes etc. away with you. It is good to be home tho.

For the rest of the week, same sort of plan as the last few weeks,

3-4 rides

3-4 short run/walks

and 2/3 swims, for a total of 6-7 hours for the week.

I'm also re-starting the diet thing, back to counting calories tomorrow. I eat to well when away for work, got to get back into some good habits.

Keep up the good work everyone.

G'day!  I love it, reading that totally made me smile.  Thanks.

6 mile run this morning in the dark.  Felt good.  Trainer ride tonight.

I got in the pool last night.  I did ok, considering it's been a long time.  I caught a glimpse of myself in my swimsuit in the mirror.  Not very pretty, time to get serious!

So, my new boss started yesterday at work.  Not sure how I feel about it.  My prior boss, who I had worked with for 15 years, was abruptly let go (no valid reason, just that he didn't fit into the companies "vision" anymore - whatever that means).  I really liked working for him.  And, he's kind of a friend too.  Should be interesting...
