Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SportzVision - 2012-02-21 2:11 AM kevinbe - 2012-02-11 10:31 AM Hello All- Off day for me today. I got to sleep in till 7:30! I got on the scale and it read 181.6. So much for 185 by the end of february. I have been trying to lose no more than a pound a week, but am wondering if I'm taking enough fuel in to compensate for the extra mileage. I will make sure to have a second helping of breakfast this morning. We're all getting together with family and having a pot luck breakfast this morning. I swam yesterday. Sometime swimming can be a challenge when you are not seeing as much improvement in it. I did a Sprint workout on the treadmill after. That's where it's at. 1:30 wu. followed by :30 second sprint interval at 11mph, followed by 1:30 at rest pace. repeat 8x. Long run tomorrow. 13.6 miler. Long and slow for me. Have a great and Safe weekend. Who's got a race coming up? How do you feel in regards to fueling? Do you feel under fueled? Maybe your body is working more efficiently than previously and you dropped the extra pounds? Listen to your body and it will help you determine if you need additional fuel or if you are ok. Ya, I'm good. I do not like sucking weight like I used to when wrestling, and anymore than a pound a day is rediculous. I shoot for 2 lbs a week. Realize there will be ebbs and flows and that my ceiling will never be as high as previous, and my floor will dip down lower than before. Shooting for 160 by August, and 170-175 by this May 19. If anything, I'm lacking in discipline. I can go a week real good, maybe two, then I regress for stretches of 3-5 days. (beer and sweets and good food get me every time) |

I could have read that a hundred times in the book but it will hit me via a different avenue and make perfect sense.cathyd - 2012-02-20 1:20 AM Went to the gym this morning after work for a (very) short run and 1500 metre swim. I see that kevin is into total immersion... I read the TI book and tried to incorporate some of the drills into my swimming when I first started but really struggled with them.... what is everyone else's thoughts on swim drills? I'm like you, I've read half the book, really struggling with it, but know that I was going no further with what I was doing, so I'm trying to revamp my stroke, "slow is smooth, smooth is fast". This will be my third day of it tomorrow. still so new at it. |

I do have a book that I love and use all the time call 'Total Swimming' by Janet Evans. It has lots of technique info and a bunch of workouts and swim training programs depending on what your goal is for your swim training. I think its a better book than the TI for anyone beyond basic learning to swim. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Consistency in the name of the game for me. I was doing super well this past month and then I go out of town for 2 days and now I can't find the motivation to get back into training. Sunday was alright, I was able to get to the gym, but the pool was closed yesterday for the swim and today was just blah! Since I know this is my M.O., I e-mailed a coach I've been talking to about Master's swimming saying that I'd be at practice tomorrow at 6am! Meaning I have someone that is expecting me to show up and train tomorrow. Nutrition has been ok. Not the best by any means especially having to eat on the road for 2 days, but also not the worst in decisions. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Consistency is my biggest problem too. I'll do ok for a few days than life gets busy, training gets derailed, and I have a hard time getting back on track. Like today for example, I haven't done any training yet and have a long list of things to do today. |

They are awkward and make me feel like I was drowning but it pays off in the end. there is a lot to those drills, lots to keep in your head. I will also add that when I did lap swimming on specific laps I would keep specific techniques in mind, like sometimes I think about reaching, or proper rotation, or proper posture in the water. I never really got to the point where I could do it all at the same time but doing this really helped me. |

Now onto more important stuff - which arm do you drink beer with. Hopefully you're still able to do that! |

I hope hitting the pool at 6 am isn't so bad and that you get your mojo back pronto. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had a nice swim workout tonight. After dropping my son off at wrestling practice, I was able to make a quick trip to the pool. I haven't swam in a little more than a week and it felt so good to get back in the water. Plus, feeling fresh from the time off -- I was able to knock out 1000 in 26 minutes - which for me is pretty good as I'm still doing the breast stroke every 4th length. Tomorrow the temp is supposed to hit 55 so I plan on heading outside for a bike ride. Should be a good time. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This was my fourth swim using TI. Glad to hear several of you have had experience with this.
I did the sprint 8 training on the treadmill again. Tomorrow, I have a 9.5 mile intermediate run with some good hills in it. Last month I ran it in 1:24 as my long run. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Made it to the practice this morning. Got in 3200 yards. It felt AMAZING! The workout: I also left with the possibility of a coaching position with the younger age group with the team 5 days a week. So this worked out really well for me. |

Glad to hear the swimming is getting better. My stroke sucks and I'm sure I will be turning to TI before too long as well - so I'm excited to follow you as you continue to make progress on your time. Good luck with the run - my bet is that you will have a new PR by the time you finish it. And you know what that means - barely pops! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A couple of thoughts: 1) everyone should check out DH's race report from the weekend. Mr. Modesty kicked a little and took some serious time off his crazy long run. 2) I hope Thor's shoulder is feeling better. 3) Anyone excited about watching Nascar this weekend? The Daytona 500 is on Sunday and I am looking forward to it in a big way. I managed to lose weight on Superbowl week - but I won't be losing anymore with 4 races and my birthday coming up. I had a nice workout today. The fact that the temperature hit 55 degrees on February 22 is incredible to me and I took advantage of the heatwave by going for a bike ride. It was great to be outside. After riding in my basement for 3 months - being outside and actually going up and down was a pretty novel experience. |

I realized after the swim today that the pool I swim at regularly is actually a 25m. I always thought that was an exaggeration because it felt shorter than any short course meter pool I've ever swum at - which explains a whole lot about my pacing. I did "unofficially" get the coaching job. Actually started tonight. It'll be good to practice what I preach with my athletes. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone! I finished my 5k on Sunday... it was the coldest and rainiest run of my life. It was a lot of fun though. I went in knowing I was under trained so I just ran and walked when I needed. On friday I am starting Insanity! My fiance got it for me for Valentines day ![]() |

I got side stiching pretty bad after pushing the first five at above race pace. I did have barly pops after hockey today. I found a new brand of Hefe that tastes just like the Hefe in Germany. It's put out by Trader Joe's. Hockey tonight was outstanding, a good workout. Tomorrow is off for me. Go get it people. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good to see everyone getting back on their training. I know after the initial burst, it is sometimes hard to keep it up when your race seems to be a loooonnnng ways away! With that being said, when is everyones first/next race? Myself, I am doing a sprint on either: June 17. I want to redo my first triathlon but I am not sure if they are having it this year so my back up plan is for one on the June 24. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow, been slacking on tracking an posting! Great job on the race Darren! Anytime you improve your time, you are doing something right! Kevin, you are a running machine! Good to see you are keeping your beer/workout ratio just right. Any spring men's hockey tourneys down your way? Could use a road trip! Melinda, keep up the good work on the swimming/biking/running. Cynthia, I think everyone should live near a beach. I could not believe all the cyclists on the PCH. David, it has been a crazy winter. Good on you for getting your bike out. Crazy...but goood!

Crap - sorry to hear you didn't beat your time today but it sounds like everything else is going well. Next time, brother! I had that beer from Trader Joes last week - it was really good and cheap. I'm gonna try a new beer from Six Point. Do they have that brand out there on the Left Coast? It's actually in a can! |

Sure you had to walk - but you finished the race and that is what really counts. Congrats! Good luck with Insanity! While I might have given you some thing else for valentine's day, I hope it helps you melt of the pounds! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Boy! Did this morning's workout SUCK! My body was sore from the aqua jogging and I felt like crap because of the cold my kids gave me. I actually averaged 4 minutes per 100 yards. My grandmother is faster! But I finished it and even managed to play some basketball with my son who is celebrating his 10th birthday. Gonna celebrate tomorrow with a trip to our favorite wings place. Off to watch the Gatorade Duels and enjoy an ice cold beverage. Hope everyone is having a good day! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Everyone sounds like they are doing so good and have a great attitude. Thanks everyone for the kind comments about my race. It was a real good time actually. Still running. I was hoping to get 100 miles in this week but man that is a lot. And my daughters birthday is on Saturday so I think I will be a little short. But real happy with my recovery, I managed to do an easy 20k yesterday, a little slow but it was good. I am feeling so blah about it though. I am having one of those moments were I am looking at my life and wondering what in the world is going on. I was up near the university yesterday and I went for my long run just around it and I was remembering about life in school and how driven I was and how important it was for me to do well and how much passion I had. I felt like I had this sense of purpose that I just don't feel now, even though now I am generally happier and more fulfilled now than I was then. Anyways, that is why I am not saying much. To answer the question though, my next race is April 1. A 10k. Hoping to switch it into beast mode for that one, if the weather cooperates (last year there was a big dump of snow before the race). |
