Blah!  Crap!  Missed the record!  The slight headwind did me in.  Finished in 31:01.  There were some other ticked off riders, too.  It was pretty warm (perfect temp for me) and the sun was shining bright.  It was a pretty day for the race.  Could have done without the headwind.  A friend of mine did the hilly course.  On the downhill section, she had the headwind.  She said she had to pedal downhill.  Next chance on the course is October!

You look great on the bike!!

I'm going to take today off as well, and just get back into it tomorrow. Has been a miserable past few days, but will see how it goes in the pool tomorrow. Maybe a walk later today to at least move around.

When is everyone's first race this year (if you've not already raced)?

As for what I learned in February:

- consistent training, and having a plan makes for great forward progress

- this tri thing is 50% phyiscal and 90% mental, for me anyway

- I really like my bike, and can't wait to actually get it on a real road

- The more progress I make in my training, the more I want the race to be sooner!

- Masters swim class is fantastic.

Yes, me again....

So, I made it to the pool today per my plan and put in a solid 2600 yards. I didn't really push it, and just wanted to get my muscles moving. Overall, a good day in the pool, and still feeling good about it. Tomorrow is back to the run, and that should be a real indicator of how I'm doing. I think I'll be fine. Being sick stinks!!

This is my recovery week and I'm enjoying the shorter distances Smile.  Figure with a very light workout on Thursday-I'm going shopping!  I need a new bathing suit...so I figure I'll make a day of it...plan early and shop hard Laughing.

Fantastic news from those who raced...great job all!

It's been a crazy few days - it was the state swim meet here in Maine. I had one daughter swim on Saturday and the other on Sunday. The great news is their team came in second and their coach won coach of the year. He has taken the team from 16th in the state (out of 16 teams) to fourth last year and now second. The bad news is not much working out, lots of sitting on concrete and bad food. I missed my long bike workout for this week. I'm starting to get excited - in another couple of weeks, it will be light enough at 5am so I can run outside. Finally living in the northerly regions of the US is paying off. By the beginning of April, the sun will be coming up around 5am and setting after 7pm.

Somehow, during the weekend, I developed a blister between my big toe and the next one (left foot). What is the best way to treat blisters? Do I just let it heal on it's own or is it better to release some of the fluid? What do you all do?

Enjoy your recovery week, they are always great Smile

Tracy and Steffi, well done at the weekend, you both did us proud

Mike, hope you feel better soon.

I had another good OWS this morning, still the slowest but gaining in confidence if not in speed.  We only have 3 sessions left before it'll be too cold and dark at 6am, sunrise at the moment is 6.15am so we are getting some beautiful sunrises over the river which coach Shelly makes us swim into to practise our sighting.    I have been reading her autobiography and in the 80s, she was the No 1 rated marathon swimmer in the world, not the No 1 woman but the No 1 swimmer, beating ALL the men regularly to win races.  Amazing, she was such a trail blazer and she's now my coach Laughing

eta bad luck on the blister - I use one of those special blister band-aids (Compeed) that falls off once the blister has healed.  I have to resist very hard the temptation to pierce and drain them which is oddly satisfying.

1) Catch up on the last 4 pages of the group: check.

2) Catch my logs back up: check.

Back in - sorry to be AWOL - we have been enjoying a veritable epidemic of illness at work, so much so that I have needed to cover for a number of my colleagues, which included a fair amount of last-minute travel. And now I have wound up sick AGAIN - augh. So it goes, I guess. Just one of those 2 months....

Really great to see everyone's training progressing, and that we have kicked of the race season with a bang! While I am not feeling 100%, I think I am going to try and hit the pool in just a bit.

Tracy, that pic is so awesome I just had to quote it again! I love those rare moments in a race when you are suffering so much it looks like you are actually laughing with glee!

Nice to see you around again, Rusty!

I really like that picture.  Everyone always says that I'm always smiling.  What a compliment!  Most of the time I'm in deep suffer mode.

BTW....I forgot to mention that I kinda liked my poor-girl's skin suit.  It was my tri suit with a tight Underarmor top.  It almost seems a bit passive aggressive since it's yellow.  Heh heh heh. Surprised

No, I still don't have the official times.  ~Sigh~

Thanks Tracy - great to be back.

We call that "Joker Face" as in "that Tracy was so Joker Faced its no wonder she crushed the time trial despite the wind!" It is basically when your mouth and nostrils get in a battle with your eyes to see which can open the widest - normally the wider you open your mouth to breath in oxygen, the tighter your eyes close, which is obviously not good in a TT. You are definitely Joker Faced in that photo - all your face holes are opened full-stop!

And I like the skinsuit - while it is common wisdom that red makes you faster, you actually have to be fast to wear yellow to a race - way to rock it!

Mike, your excitement and enthusiasm for the sport and training comes through on each of your post.

Consistent training; tris are a lot mental beyond physcial; you want to race and you love Candy and Andy's Masters....all very good!

Kathy -- thanks for the enthusiastic boost. I need it today -- was feeling somewhat lousy mentally this AM as I'm still shedding the remnants of my cold. Swim felt heavy & slow, and was discouraging. Have a 1 hour trainer ride tonight and was dreading it.

I am enjoying the training, and the whole sport. Its a great way to stay active, get fit, meet great people, have fun, all while doing something just a bit crazy. Its great!

Rusty-that's hilarious!  I'll be using that one!

Mike-Don't dread the trainer ride.  Just set up in front of the TV and have family time.  Your family can laugh at your "joker face"! Surprised

Rusty, great to have you back and Mike, hope the trainer ride went well,  I  love trainer rides with my son watching TV, we have some of our best chats then.

I am trying to make amends after doing so diabolically (sp?) on last month's nutrition challenge and I'm sitting here sipping on a green smoothie which isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.  There was some lovely looking kale at the grocers so I bought that and have mixed it with watermelon, banana, carrot, some protein powder and plenty of ice.  We'll see how it sits in my guts which can be intolerant of raw leafy greens and bananas but I'm hoping liquidising them will get around the problems.

All is well in trainer-ride land. I did my hour and kept up a decent cadence the entire time.

My 12 year old daughter wandered to the basement while I was 'riding' and she thought the whole scene was funny. Her first commnet "Wow, you are really sweaty".

Thanks Gwen - very happy to be back. I actually did very well in last months nutrition challenge, but I do remember after the first time i got sick making a joke that I was only one stomach flu away from my perfect race weight. Seems I was in error: I was actually two more stomach flus short. Good news is I only have one more to go!

I love Kale, (we are getting a good bit from our CSA currently), but I am not sure about it raw, although I can certainly see the "benefits." Good luck with it!

Awesome Job Mike - nothing better than having a cheering crew to be you through! I am traveling most of the next two days and have a scheduled off day today. This weekend kicks off our spring break and the weather currently looks pretty promising. We have 5 hours in the mountains scheduled for Saturday and plan on going up to some of the bigger more remote climbs that I have not been on in years - the middle climb is a little less than ten miles and has almost 3000 feet of vertical - not too bad. The fun part is that the last 4 miles averages 11.5% and has a couple of sections that are 23%+. It is that time of the year - let the suffering begin!

Happy anniversary Mike, I'm off to read your TT entry.  Tracy, have a great race this weekend.  My green smoothie so far has been a great success, no gut rot which is my usual reaction to raw leafy greens and no reflux which is how bananas affect me.  Hoorah, mincing them seems to be the way to go - I get all the nutrients but not the problems caused by the fibre.  Best thing was that the Munchkin loved it too and had seconds.  So this month's nutrition challenge will be to make us a green smoothie everyday.

Glad to hear your tummy agreed with the smoothie!  My little guy and I have a green smoothie nearly every day.  Try adding a little cinnamon.  Yum!
