kenj - 2013-01-25 6:12 PMGood luck with your race too Bill! Is that on Sunday?

Thanks Ken. Yes, it's Sunday. To tell the truth, I've got mixed feelings about it. I've been running the course a lot this week since its one of the few places to run in NYC, plus there is the cold. The good news is i fully expect to have a PR time. That's the benefit to having very few running races to my credit. Of course all of this is moot as i have to show up with the bibs of 2 other runners.

good luck......

What's the best/most useful piece of kit you've ever bought?

Mine is definitely my prescription goggles. In the uk a good pair of speedo goggles cost about £10 but last Feb I bought from my optician, some prescription ones for only£28 - which I thought was reasonable. I can't really see a thing without my glasses so, until I got these I could never even time myself at a lap 'cause I can't read my watch with my bare eyes. However, now I can read my watch and, in a race, it is so much easier to find my bike after coming out of the water - previously I had to rely on my son to be hanging around the pool/ sea exit to hand me my glasses.

Good luck to all those racing this weekend. We have had more snow last night but appatently from now it's going to warm up, rain hard and get very windy. No more excuses then.

RunningJoke - 2013-01-26 12:06 AM Meulen, I have no idea what that thing is that you just bought, but it sounds fast! Enjoy. I love that I started this sport with a bathing suit, shorts, and a Huffy mountain bike that I bought at a garage sale for $20. Do you ever run out of new things to learn, or new things to buy???

No way!  That is half of what keeps this interesting!!

But, we all stumbled into this sport different ways, but glad that we all made it!!

That is interesting as I would have never thought of needing prescription goggles since I had my eyes fixed.  I would say the most useful is/was any of my Garmins.  Even when I was self coaching the data I downloaded and compared to what I learned here and other sources helped me get where I am in this sport (from BOP to MOP and able to see FOP).  The only other non-essential was the time and money I spent on swim lessons.  Hopefully by November, I will add the money spent on coaching!  Smile

Good question Jennifer!  Now get outside and run! Cool

Good question! My most used are my garmins. I've actually got a couple I use. But since I got the 910xt I have all my run and swim data too. A very close second is my Kurt Kinetic. Man! I spend more time with that thing than I do my wife! Shhhhh....don't tell!! Lol

Had a biopsy done on a mole on my clavicle on Thursday, 4 stitches. No swimming for me on Friday. I took a day off and went to the Jets vs Pittsburgh game (we won 4-2) and ate popcorn and a coke. It was a great day/night. Put in a hard 2:15 indoor bike ride today and it felt great. Now to head outside and shovel the driveway for a couple of hours.

Dwayne - I'm hoping you get good results from the test.

Gear - as has already been mentioned, for me, its anything that gets me to train more.  All of the toys are fun but the trainer is probably the best.  It's a love hate relationship, but I would have a hard time getting better at the bike only riding 6 months of the year.

And I want to review my latest little toy, the bluetooth transmitter for the tv in front of my trainer.  I'm really glad I got.  The sound is good and there is no noticeable delay.  I plug it directly into the DVD/netflix player.  I'm using this one GOgroove. It runs $30, but if you are interested, you also need to by this cable RCA cable to make it work with a TV or any device that doesn't have a standard headphone jack.  I no longer blast the TV into the floor of my daughter's bedroom.  The one gripe I have is with my headphones.  They go right in the ear and sometimes sweat pools in my ear (gross but workable). My wife had bought them for me a long time ago and I never used them. So if I was buying a new set, I'll look for some that sit over the ears.

Happy training!

So I'm excited to be getting in some outside biking in next weekend!

DJ - I'm heading to your stomping grounds from Friday-Sunday and was looking to do a couple of rides.  I figured one day would be 1-2 loops of Red Rock Canyon and another would be the River Mountains Loop Trail.  I've done Red Rock and really like it.  How is RMLT? It's 34 miles around which is probably as far as I want to go since I still need to get in runs.  Any rides you would suggest might be better/different? Thanks.

on Feb 1-3rd? What kind of rides are you looking for? A rides? B rides? If you want to join a group, I can tell you where to go.

As far as I know RMLT is cleared up, but the tunnels are still closed. I can double check on this, but since we have had some rain for the last couple days, it's most likely going to be a bit debris filled, so I wouldn't recommend it for now.

What distance are you looking for and terrain? I can give you a flattish, a hilly route (from gradual to a bit of a hard workout, depending on what you want), or a mixture.

A few I would suggest (depending on what you want/like), Red Rock 159/160 (not the loop), out to Blue Diamond and back, Mt. Potosi (be prepared to do a 9 mile climb at 3-5% grade, M Resort out to Jean (gradual climb, 30-35 mile roundtrip), 95 to Paulite, etc, many rides to tell ya. :-)

Jennifer, your goggles sound great, probably much better than my solution, but I found speedo and tyr make corrective goggles.  My prescription is pretty different in each eye, so I bought one pair -3.5 and one pair -2.5 for $20 each, switched the lenses around and poof!  A pair and a spare of prescription goggles on the cheap!  Changed my life as I also couldn't see the clock, the buoys, or once, that the person naked next to me in the locker room was my terrifying professor.

Other best purchases ever were my first road bike, a serious carbon-fiber upgrade from the aforementioned Huffy who first made me understand why people LIKE biking, good gloves and foot warmers for winter rides., my trainer, and my first tri suit which secretly makes me feel like a superhero.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!  I'm working again, boo, but made it to the pool on the way home.

I use te tyr and speedo goggles. Been using them for years. They are cheap and work great. You don't even need to go to a doctor to get them. I paid $25 for mine, not quid!

I was supposed to do a group ride today, but all of us decided that it was unsafe. Not that we don't mind the drizzling rain, but the roads would be slick due to oil build up (remember, Vegas - rare rainfalls, so all the oil/debris does get build up on roads, and the rain makes it slick to ride on at times), at least we all got free hot drinks at McDonald's (which is owned by another rider). After I bagged the group ride, I went to my LBS to restock on some items, and they recently had GURU bike fit setup there. After talking to my fitter, he wanted me to try out the GURU fitting. It was very interesting, and it's WAY easier to adjust things on the fly vs. changing things out on the bike then the fitter says, "like it?" which is hard to do because you can't really tell the small differences. The GURU fit is more like "is this better? or is that better?" kind of like at the Optician office. I'm really grateful that I got it for free although, the price isn't too bad $125.

He then realized that my fit is way off on the bike vs what I like on the Guru. No wonder why I was having issues with my shoulders, and feeling like I *have* to put myself more forward. SO, he flipped the stem, lowered the seatpost (which I thought was weird because I thought it was fine before), in order to move my saddle more forward. I'm a little bit of an opposite, I actually like riding much better being right above the bottom bracket vs. being up and back. Hopefully the new fit will help alleviate shoulder tightness (I do better in an aggressive vs more relaxed). After my trainer ride today, I notice that it was very easy to increase my power vs when I would have a bit of an issue with not going high enough. I'm going to do my Power test again soon to double check...i could be totally wrong, but it does feel easier to get power in my pedals vs what it was before.

Its nice that you got that for free, although you are right that a good fitting is worth the money. Sounds like your old fitting was off quite a bit!

Thanks for all the feedback for how to get prescription goggles for less money - too late now!!

However, good news. I went out this morning on a group bike ride despite the winds, flooding, remains of snow in some parts - it was definitely the worst conditions I've ever been out in. I did enjoy it though. However, due to all the advice and sign posting you've given me on here I have been mucking about with my bike a bit in the last two weeks, degreasing, cleaning, polishing greasing again - and the upshot is that my bike was really running much, much more quietly than it has done for a while..and I've discovered a couple of little adjustments I could make with a screwdriver to make it even better. So, thanks every one - it was fab- the shifting was better too.

On the downside - its all dirty again now

It is a great thing that you are taking the initiative to learn to do maintenance and adjustments to your bike!

Nice work getting out and riding!

I got up and got my 2 hour trainer ride done then went out to brunch with some good friends and undid all the good, calorie wise!    It was worth it though!  Yummy! Innocent

Ditto. Had to bag, yet another, group ride this morning. I was supposed to go from M Resort to Goodsprings. But after looking at the weather and going outside and feeling the 20-25mph gusts. Nope, not today. All I could do is pump my fists at Goodsprings and say, "I shall be back to seek revenge with vengeance!!!". Last year I felt strong enough to "conquer" the large hill from Jean to Goodsprings, but 4 miles into the ride, my cleat broke, and couldn't be really clipped in well to climb. So I had defeat, and haven't been back...until today. "Curse you!!".

Anyone had a ride where they want to do/conquer yet some "thing" always seem to get in the way? Hopefully, 3rd time is a charm! Alas, I'm going to put some time in the trainer, and hopefully I can get my long ride in Tuesday.

Up to 17 miles @ 2:20 yesterday.  Hilly course.  Interesting running so much so soon.  Liking it really.  Hard bike today with 4 sets of 3 hill climbs at 105 to 110%.  Able to do it after yesterday's run.  Happy.

Good to learn something about simple bike maintenance.   You can fix shifting problems really easily and adjust brakes. I took bike building classes.  Love playing with the bikes.

I hope your weather gets better, for your sake and mine!  Yes, I'll be out there from Feb 1-3.  Gonna pick up a bike on rental on Friday, so I'd love to hook up with a group ride for Saturday and/or Sunday.  But not an A ride.  I'm in no shape for a 9 mile climb, that is Smile.  While I'm okay with some good hills I'm looking for scenery, and company is always nice. Anything in the 1-2 hour range.  The guys I go to Vegas with don't ride.  But I will be pacing them on our new "Las Vegas Classic", a 4 mile fun run.  Next year it will be 5 miles.

Rides to conquer - I've got one.  Its the 56 mile loop that was the bike portion of the HITS Hunter Mountain course last year.  I really wanted to get back there with more bike fitness and less rain.  Unfortunately, this year they changed the course to an easier out-and-back to make it more "appropriate for amateur cyclists" or something like that.  I guess I can go out and ride it with traffic but its pretty far from me, and a technical course.

Finished my first race of the year.  May they all work out so well... 1:34 for the HM, a pretty big PR from my last HM in 2011.  The temps climbed to 20F and the skies were clear really couldn't ask for more.  Now I have 3 months to move that HM pace to my Mary pace, maybe a l little aggressive, but that's what training is for.

I've been MIA for a while! Had company in town all week, ate out pretty much every day, training derailed a bit. Got in a couple of runs and Crossfit sessions, and a couple of bike rides on the fixie, but definitely not a stellar week!

Getting back on track now, as my official IM training program starts tomorrow (sort of--Monday is a rest day, but it's still the beginning). I've decided to use the BeIron Fit training plan, so it's 30 weeks. I'll be changing the beginning a bit to add a swim, since I'm joining a masters group and need to work on my technique. I might replace a bike with a swim or just add it as an extra session, just not sure about that yet. I also have to focus on nutrition, because I did not lose the weight I wanted to in order to be at a good starting weight, so that will be a challenge.

I have a half marathon in February, then one triathlon a month starting in March.

Took the tri bike out for its first outdoor ride this year. Got in 24 solo miles, felt pretty good but had soreness and fatigue in my neck from being in the aero position. Does anyone else get this soreness? I can't tell if it's poor fit or just that I haven't been riding in that position. I did have the bike professionally fit in 2011 when I got it, but since I didn't ride it last year, I can't remember if that soreness went away or not.

It's great to read about everyone's successes and training stories! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Oh, here's my latest blog entry:

You will be sore for a little while, it is normal. I don't have a trip bike, but I hear many stories about this often. If this is your first ride outdoors in a while, its just your neck muscles getting used to the road vibrations and positioning. Try stretching before and after your rides to help build up your muscles again.

Speaking of soreness, I now I have sore left leg after being in the trainer for 1 1/2 hours yesterday with the new bike positioning. Shoulders and power feels great, legs, not so much. LOL

Bill. Congrats! God dang are you getting fast!

Give the tri bike a little bit more of a chance. It takes a little getting used to the aero position. Go in baby steps and spend more and more time on it. If it doesn't go away after a while then re-visit the fit
