Extreme Veteran 1222 Tallahassee, Florida | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Closed Very quick post to say WooHoo to all of our racers!!!!! Great job to all of you. Elena, I was stalking you but then couldn't post. Carol so glad that you PR'ed the swim but more importantly, you had fun and it sounds like it brought some of the joy back for you. Mike, I'm so flipping jealous because you were in Manhattan; the race sounds excellent. All of you did great and we are so proud of all of you. Steve, you are a machine. Know that you are tired but I too think it's from the fatique. Your Tahoe time may not be quiet what you are used to getting but I think it's still gonna be great - at least for us mere mortals. Samantha, awesome job by your marathon friend and that is great that you were a swim buddy. I'll post more later this week. Major stomach issues kept me down for a few days and then a visit by a friend interrupted some training time. Now I'm dealing with some of the aftermath of her visit; sometimes bad things just happen to good people. Again, congrats to our stud racers - Elena, Carol, and Mike!!!!! |

Regular 104 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Closed Wow lots of races this weekend! Elena - Sounds like you had a great race through the bike. HOpe the run went just as well. Glad you could meet some friends and enjoy some good wine. Mike - I'm also surprised to hear NYC is hilly. Sounds like you had fun. And it also sounds like the run might be getting better? Hope that is the case. NIce job! Carol - Nice race by you also! How exciting to PR and more importantly I'm glad you had fun and really enjoyed it in spite of the weather. My race earlier was also rain all day and it can really bog you down if you let it. Glad to hear you kept your spirits high. Oh and as for Vball, my wife played in HS. I want to be cool like her so I practice bumping around and peppering with her and then we play in a league on Wednesdays. Then on weekends we sometimes try to play pick-up games. We just have fun with it and it gets us outside. My legs are always really tired after playing though. Probably the sand mixed with jumping and diving around. Steve - It sounds like you have some TdF like hills out there. 10 miles is more than half of some of my rides. Keep up the hard work and like Samantha said I think you will be surprised once you give your body some rest. Until then keep up the hard work. Mitzi - Sounds like you also have some tough hills, and there is no shame in trying. You didn't turn around or avoid the hill and that is a feat in itself. Just keep practicing and don't get discouraged. Maybe make that your goal. By next summer you want to be able to bike up the hill without walking. Happy training Have a good week all! |

Veteran 333 Murrieta Calif. | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Closed Elena, Carol and Mike~ Great job with your races today!!! Mitch and I went for 55 mile ride today! This was my longest in a year and I definitely felt it! Mitch's new bike is a beast. I tried to stay with him, but couldn't and definitely paid the price on the way back! We were on an intercity trail that went from Inland Empire to Huntington Beach and back. It was actually cold when we got to the beach but really heated up on the way back! Kind of a long false flat the whole way back and I go to about mile 45 and fell apart! Mitch had to wait a half hour for me at the cars! Sorry buddy!! I think I need to get re-fitted on my bike. My forearms and fingers are super sore and neck too! Other than my come-apart, I am very happy with my ride! I stayed in the aero position almost the whole way and also probably way too many miles for my current level of fitness! I hope everyone had a great weekend and Happy Training!! |

Extreme Veteran 1106 , Connecticut | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Closed Anthony - I was thinking about making that hill one of my goals. Carol - you are so cool, now you have a story about not just racing but racing in the rain. Sounds like you really enjoyed the process, which means you are getting strong! Mike - so nice to hear about your race. You sound really positive talking about it, fight on. I didn't appreciate how long it takes to get into shape, but just doing one workout at a time. Partially written off this year (though have a sprint in Aug.). Starting to think about training right for next year! Mitzi |

Steve- Your killing some workouts!!! Mitch- Bro yal are killing it on the bike. Mitzi! Everyday is a day to continue fitness! You Got This! Samantha- I know the girl that you swam with was in awe of swimming with an ironman! Anthony- Good to hear from ya man on the post! I had a pretty busy weekend! I did a brick workout but did not get my long bike in this weekend. I am going to to substitute my schedule with a solid run today instead of the swim and do a swim bike tomorrow. Mitch and anyone else- did you get your bike professionally fit once you bought it. I had a couple of pointers when I started my road bike, but this try bike is amazing! However, I feel like I am out of position and my hamstrings are feeling over worked! |

Yes, the first thing I did was get fitted. Money well spent. You want to be in the proper position. The guy that fitted me said just like swimming and running, Form is of the up-most importance. If your not in the right position you will not have proper form... |

Extreme Veteran 633 Hollister, CA | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Closed Hi everyone!!!! I am SO excited about my first HIM. Yhank you so much for the support and excitement! Bear with me- my kids did a number to my computer and have no idea how to fix it. So I'm writing this from my phone! So I drive up Friday. Stopped and got my toes done... Because what else is a bunch of ladies in wetsuits and goggles going to do while they wait for their wave to take off? Met my friends later that eve for a wine & cheese receptation in the lobby of our hotel. So good! We then headed to the restaurant and had more yums and wine. Then to the pool & finally to their deck which I overlooked the pool and had more wine. Yes. I had too much ine on Friday! Saturday headed to expo for orientation& T2 set up. I was good to go. Chugged water all day long. My family came Saturday eve & went for dinner. More water. Double ck'ed all my gear. Went to bed what about 9:30. Felt relaxed but did not sleep a wink!! May have slept 2 hrs, which made me nervous about what that would do to my performance. Headed out the door with all my gear and family in tote at 515. Easy drive till got to guernville. Not sure why I didn't just jump out w my bike and gear instead of waiting till we were directed to parking lot. By the time I got to T1, I had 30 min to set up. I was freaking out. Set up right away. Had my bag ready to stuff my wetsuit in (they transport it back to finish), scarfed a banana and 3/4 Picky Bar, bathroom, and to swim entrance. Swim: wow! This was a near perfect swim for me. Had litte or no contact w others throughout swim. Never gasped for air like I usual do. No sign of oncoming panic! At halfway point I went to bilateral breathing bc i felt that comfortable. Sighting was good but wasnt hard bc size of river & fog coverage. It just felt awesome! 44:39 (2:19 pace) T1: went smoothly till I went to stuff my wetsuit In that transition bag. It was gone! I stood here and said aloud "where's my bag? Someone took my bag!" Saw a volunteer at the end if the racks and told her my bag was gone. Told her my # and just as I did, I see my bag! She said "I'll takeyour wetsuit and stuff it in for you. You go!" I Said thanks, grabbed my bike and ran out. It was a muddy mess. My tank looked as if I had raced a mud run! (5:07) Bike: mounted easily after the hill. I was @mile 5 when I felt hungry! Took a gu. This was the first of many times that I'd actually feel hungry while on bike and run. Something to work on? Bike was awesome too. Scenery -stunning. Love the plethora of wineries we'd pass. I seemed much more aware of the scenery this go-around than when I did aquabike. Hungry again@mi 15. Took a banana and chomps they were handing out. Ate banana first and instantly felt good. Stuck the chomps in my tank and nibbled till next stop . Another chomp at mi 30. After mi 30 i don't know exact mi where I fueled but it was steady fuel, water, and gatorade intake to the end-a lot more calories than during training. I went fairly hard the first half then tried to slow down a bit to save for Chalk Hill. I always free-wheeled it downhills & took it fairly easy on the ups. Chalk Hill was fine. Didnt scare me lke last year and realized once i climbed it that "hey! that was not bad at all!!" The home stretch was flat &'fast. Probably went harder than should have. Weather: OMG, Steve, we lucked out this year. I didnt ck temp but im guessing It might have reached 80 mid day. It was overcast/ marine layer till 10am! So excited about my ride. 3:34 (15.6 avg) T2: so beCause the changing room was nearly the farthest distance from my gear and had planned to change into my run shorts i had decided to bring a short skirt, throw it on, yank the tri shors off, pull on the run shorts. Worked perfectly. Headed out and used bathroom. Only one person in front of me. Thought I was faster, but: T2- 7:14 Run: first 3 miles were tough. My legs felt really good but was not expecting the hills right off the bat! Throughout run i felt like i did on the bike - feeling that stomach growl. I had planned to take fuel at certain miles, but didn't keep w my schedule once I began feeling hungry. So I took h20 and Gatorade at pretty much every water stop. And gu or chews at about every other. Stomach felt perfect. Walked the first two hills. Then a solid run till mi 9. This always seems to be the mile that it begins to hurt. Walked a short portion up the hill that takes you out of the winery. Caught my friend at about mile 11. Had a Cheshire-cat smile when I passed him. Then I took off. Last mile I went as hard as my legs could take me. . For a a minute or two I was prepping my mind about T3! Ha! THERE IS NO T3! I AM DONE!!! Final run time : 2:19.----- I could not believe it!!! I was only 2 min short of my half mary PR of 2:17!! I thought that was awesome. Icing on the cake. !!! Saw husband right away and they got a few pics of me crossing finish. Official race time total. 6:51!! whoohooo!!!! my goal was to be between 7-7:15. ecstatic !! Once i left my kids and husband, i headed into eating area for athletes. And it was like i couldnt get air. My lungs were constricted. Bent over. Breathed deal breaths. . Sat down in a shady spot and the girl next to me asked if she should get me some help. Said no &rested there for another 20 min. Couldn't eat. Finally Felt better. Legs felt shredded. Give me a few days and I may be in the hunt for my next HIM! :D Edited by EV3110 2013-07-15 1:39 PM |

Extreme Veteran 1106 , Connecticut | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Closed Elena - such a great report. You were obviously more prepared than you thought. Mike - glad to hear you feeling upbeat. Carol - You always express so much joy in the process. Anthony - like your attitude about watching the fast runners go by. Have been fighting workouts - not getting out to do them till evening. Just lots of neg. self talk - wondering if I still love the struggle. Today spent a few hours at the gym. Decided that 35 min. jogs just wasn't cutting it. Did 1:24 on treadmill - though only 51 of them running. Took Steve's message to heart that it's OK to run/walk. Ran 2x10min; 2x5...2x2; 3 - 1min sprints. The love of pain and sweat might just be coming back... Mitzi Edited by MuscleMomma 2013-07-15 10:21 PM |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Closed Elena very nice race. It is amazing you nailed that on the training you had done. Once we get you sufficiently trained up I am thinking 6:15:00 on your next HIM... and well you are going to have to go out and fix that HM PR as well. That course is not friendly for running so we get you a flat course without all the swimming and biking and I am sure you can cut some time off of that as well. Very nicely done sounds like pacing was perfect. Try to figure out your total calorie intake for next time. It sounds like you went a little calorie lite on the bike which made you hungry on the run. I'll have to catch Mike's RR later. Carol always on the mark. Glad you are on the mend. |

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Closed Elena -- awesome job on the HIM!!! I've taken yesterday & today off. Will get back at it in the pool tomorrow. Forgotten I had scheduled a massage for tonight, and it can't come at a better time . I also have a sports PT appointment tomorrow to look at my hammy/glute thing. it still hurts occasionally today, and I've not done anything athletic since sunday. Not a good sign. I'm still planning on the HIM next month, even if its a walk-athon after the bike. Looking at my bike last night I discovered the wheel magnet was hitting the sensor every time it went around, so maybe that was the 'flat tire' feeling thing on Sunday? Who knows. Maybe the engine on my bike is just crappy. This weekend my 10 year old daughter is doing her 2nd tri! I'm more excited about this than I am about anything I'm doing this year. She did this last year as well, and it is the most awesome thing I've ever seen. We were talking about training last night, and she feels she's ready since "I do swim team every day, and ride my bike every day, mostly uphill. And the run is short". Like her confidence. The kids event, held entirely on the campus of MIT in Cambridge, MA is a 100 yd swim, 3 mile bike, and .75 mile run, ending on the track at the MIT football stadium. Hope everyone is having a great day!!! Mike Edited by Mike_D 2013-07-16 9:02 AM |

Veteran 421 Los Angeles | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Closed I just finished my first run in 2 weeks! Felt great! A little rib pain when I had to breath hard but no pain with the impact. Managed an 8:30 pace. Felt like I was pushing it a bit. Olympic in 6 weeks or so. Not sure really what to do. Haven't been following a plan and with the injury there wasn't much I could do. I guess I'm just going to to try to get my workouts in and continue to base. I'm just looking for a fun race with a good run at the end. I've only done full and half distance so I'm a transition expert by any means... The race I'm doing is the Nautica Malibu Triathlon. It's going to televised on NBC as a lot of famous people do it. Should add a little something extra to it. |

Expert 1608 Grapevine, Texas | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Closed Elena -- what a beautiful race you had! And you totally crushed your time goal too! Looks like we both had really nice days on the temperature too...such a nice surprise. Ha, I loved your thoughts of T3 Great pic of you and your daughter. Good times and good memories made for you both. Mike -- nice race for you as well! Cool that you got to go through Central Park. As for the swim, are you sure you didn't strap some propellers on....wow....current or no current, that is super fast! So glad you got to experience this one, even if it's only once. And awesome that you and your daughter will be sharing in her 2nd tri experience! Good job infecting her . Pam -- so sorry about your friend. You are so right about bad things happening to good people. Not saying it's the cause for you, but those types of things just make me sick. Hope you are feeling better and that your friend is also recovering. Jim -- nice ride for you and Mitch! Good training for you trying to keep up with him on his new spiffy bike. Remember the person in the lesser bike is getting a better workout . Mitzi -- Thanks! I definitely did enjoy the day, and it helped me recover more mentally from some of my setbacks. For the record, I think you have made great progress this year. You trained for and completed your second sprint. In the process you faced down some major fears. You have gained fitness and learned a tremendous amount about what it takes to train. No need to rush to up the distance. Not that I'm the model triathlete, but I did 4 sprints before doing my first OLY. As for the biking, it is deceptively difficult. Based on the groups I attempted to ride with fairly early into it, and seeing others race results, I became convinced that I was the worst cyclist in the world. Honestly, I have had to reach the point of just not caring much about that to enjoy riding. Anthony -- Very cool that you and your wife play volleyball together. Beach doubles is quite a workout! I also happen to think it makes for a long and happy marriage . Kerry & I gave that up a few years into our marriage when commutes and careers were taking center stage. But definitely fun times; so glad you are getting to do that together. Jared -- nice juggling on your workout schedule! Mitch -- go easy on Jim now. Glad the ribs are holding up reasonably well. Ha, you are a TV personality now too...so you will fit right in with all the other celebrities . Jay, nice to see you...hope all is well, and that you are getting close to getting beyond the double shifts. Samantha, missed the part about you being a swim buddy. What a cool experience, and a great way to inspire confidence. Steve, hope you are on that beach! So I got back home from an errand today and noticed my rear tire (bike, not car) was flat. Guess I picked something up in the race. Counting it as another blessing that it waited until AFTER the race to deflate. Had a really great swim today. Decided to do the whole workout (only 1700 yards) with bilateral breathing. Probably the smoothest I've ever felt doing that. Considering an OLY in September. It's funny, I'm fine with doing the swim and the bike, and dreading the idea of even a 10K run. Total opposite of how I have felt previously. Posted a quick race report if anyone needs reading to put them to sleep: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... |

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Closed way to go, Mitch! Hope everything keeps feeling better. Went to the doc yesterday for the leg. He took about 20 minutes to check things out, have me move, stretch, and do a few other things to see what motions/areas are impacted, etc. Wants me to get a couple x-rays tomorrow AM just to be sure there is no small stress fracture in the hip/thigh area. He doubts there is, but making sure, and to set a baseline of where things are. His take is a soft tissue strain, which I kind of suspected/knew, and he'll send me to PT to get it straightened out. Found a PT in my hometown who is also a marathoner, so I'm going to see her as soon as I can get the insurance paperwork done. Doc didnt' think I would need to stop running as long as it does not feel like I'm injuring myself. can't wait for this weekend. Fun times with my 10 year old doing her race. |
