Ok, this is the point that I get continually confused about.  I've understood from other posts in different forums that if you spend some time (number of weeks/months) training at a lower intensity level (Z2)- that over time your pace should improve while maintaining that same HR/intensity level.

That's a pretty common understanding/belief. I myself thought this to be true until recently. Well, it is true to some degree. The giant base of low intensity training allows you to build enough capacity to take on the intensity training. I think of it like a car and the amount of RPMs that you can rev to before you hit redline. Little base is like a car with a 6500 RPM limit. You can wind it up to get speed out of it but it tops out pretty quickly. With a lot of base training you are pushing that capacity, that RPM limit, out to say a Ferrari like 9800 RPM. With that base, you have more room to wind it up and when you're at 6500, which was previously your top end, you can maintain that speed (and more) without much effort.

Hope that makes sense.

There are other benefits to low intensity training as well like buidling your aerobic engine, training your body to burn fat as fuel instead of carbs, building muscle capilary density, building your heart's ability to pump oxygen rich blood to your muscles, etc.

What type of heart rate monitor does everyone use?  Why do you like it?  Why do you not?  I'm starting to shop around.

I have been using a Polar with the foot pod for two years now. My biggest concern before I purchased it was how accurate the foot pod would be, but it turns out to be highly accurate right out of the box, I didn't even have to calibrate it. I have the 200sd model. My biggest dislike is the way it transfers data, through audible tones into your pc's microphone. I have never used the feature because I don't have a mic for the computer, however, I have noticed lately that the tones seem crackly, and sometimes they quit all together, when the buttons are pushed. I doubt I would be able to get the data downloaded at this point.

Likes: Small size, accurate, instantaneous speed/pace info, able to use it during the swim. Long battery life. I just got a low battery indication this week, after two years of use.

Dislikes: Data transfer function, although I think the newer models use a usb connection now. No gps feature. Need to have wrist unit battery replaced by a dealer. It does calculate your zones z1-5 for you, however, from what I understand (which isn't much!) is that ones "zones" are different for swimming, running, and biking. This unit only recognizes one set, so I have it set for my running zones.

Overall: I love it and absolutely cannot work out without it. It's not perfect, but definately gets the job done.

I think the "perfect" hrm would be one that blends foot sensor info with gps info, was reasonably sized, could be used during swimming, and had a nice interface with your computer.
I'm not familiar with the newer models, but I thought I saw an ad somewhere that polar may already have something similar to this out now.

The Gamins look pretty intriguing to me as well, but I have never used one. I would be interested to know how well they maintain the gps signal in heavy tree cover or when surrounded by tall buildings. If it doesnt drop the signal I would be interested in their units as well.

Congrats Caius and Terry!  My hubby and I will be celebrating 10 years on May 1.  On that day, we'll be checking in to a hotel with our kids, in Vancouver!  I've signed up for the Vancouver Marathon on May 3!!

My son actually wanted me to run a marathon in each of Ottawa, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Toronto!

HI! Congrats to all the love birds celebrating aniversaries!!

I have a polar HR monitor & the new Garmin 405. I love the Garmin for training.

Garmin Likes: Time, Pace, Miles on one screen
HR info Zone, HR, % on another screen
Virtual Pace competitor (you set pace)
Calories burned
Download capabilities to further analize
GPS
Dislikes: Not waterproof!!
Expensive $350
Battery good for 8hr collecting date. If using just watch (time) it will last longer.

(Not sure about GPS with trees/ tall buidings)

Polar Likes: Waterproof!!!!
I use this one when I am doing triathlons.
On the Treadmill @ gym HR monitor works on collecting the HR info.
Dislikes: Only HR & time data.

Have a good weekend!

Terry & Caius - a belated congrats on the anniversaries.

Tracy - way to go, taking the plunge and signing up for the marathon.  I'm thinking about a full in May, but may instead do the Around the Bay 30K.  I'll need to make up my mind.

I'm very close to joining a gym.  I didn't think I'd do that, but with winter approaching I don't have another way to access a treadmill if the weather is rough outside.  I'll make my decision this week.

Thanks for the info on the HRMs folks.  I'm looking at the Garmin Forerunner 305. I'll keep researching others though.

great info on the HRM's I ordered a Polar after debating it for a few weeks but it has some features I like so thats what I went with.  Congratulations on the anniversaries , my husband and I celebrated 27 years in August this year.  I have a 5K race this weekend, I got a team together at work to do it with me as a team. All the proceeds go to breast cancer research .  The weather is really cooling down around here, I think winter is on its way !

Have a good week !!

On the subject of HRM's, I was looking at garmins website. It says the 305 is water resistant. Polar says their's is water resistant to 50m. Just trying to determine if one can swim with the 305 or not.

Neil, how does your garmin do with the satellite signal in areas of limited sky coverage, like tall buildings or heavy tree cover?

Timmeh - the Garmin may say that it is water resistant on their site, but they also tell you not to submerge it in more than 1 meter of water.  Essentially it is not waterproof, and the instructions that come with it specifically state not to swim with it.  That said I've certainly seen posts from other people who say they swim with theirs on.  Not sure how much money they have lying around, but I'm not going to do something to void my warranty.

However - I did swim with it.  I placed it inside a couple of ziplock bags and stuck it under my swim cap.  The first time I tried this it didn't really work since I didn't hit the start button correctly.  But the second time, I got some very useable data from an open water swim, even though it was under my swim cap - and I set it to record every 100M.  I didn't use it more often because my open water swim actually has some evenly spaced poles in the middle of the lake that someone had measured with a laser guide - so I just used my waterproof Timex.  But next year I do plan to use it more in the open water.  However, I won't race with it.  Too nervous about something happening with all the legs and arms + it would slow me down in transition.

I live in the burbs, so I don't really have any tall buildings around, and only occasionally do I run through wooded areas.  But I've never had a problem with the signal.  When I ran the 1/2 last week I was surrounded by tall buildings and I did lose the signal just a couple of times for a second or two, but other than that no issues.  But I could hear some other guys Garmin constantly losing the signals - not sure if he also had a 305 or an older model.

Even though it's not waterproof, I still love it and it's the best piece of kit I've bought so far.

I have a 305 and also a 205 (or whatever the older one was).  When I would run in the downtown Calgary area over lunch and it was overcast, the 205 would take 10 minutes to find the satellites (I *was* moving at the time).  The 305 found 'em right away, under similar conditions.

My lovely wife has now been "bitten" by the bug. She has been doing quite a bit of running and is now wanting a HRM with pace info. She doesn't like the foot pod on my polar so we went down to check out the local sporting good store. They had both the 305 and 405. According to the salesperson, the 305 is water resistant to 1m and the 405 is water resistant to 50m (same as polar). They also said the 405 will lock on to the satellites much quicker. The only problem we could see with the 405 was the price tag, $350, ouch! We're going to do some more research before taking the plunge.

Timmeh - I believe the sales guy is full of it.  The 405 is built the same as the 305, in that neither are designed for swimming.

I will not be swimming with my 405.

It is getting colder here in California. I am prbably going to have to stop biking outside due to the weather. What do you do during the winter. All the spin classes in town start too late. Are there any spin class DVD or something to keep me motivated to keep cycling on an indoor trainer?

Next week I will be doing a metric century but it will actually be 68miles not 60miles. 68miles - WOW. We are leaving for Lake Tahoe this weekend. We are thinking of doing a bike around the lake 72mil. Maybe we should do half one day & the other half the next day. I hope it doesn't snow.

Hey Kristina - www.Spinervals.com has some great DVDs on it.

Tim - I was reading on the Garmin 305 website and it stated that the 305 acquired signals much quicker than the 205, like Tracey said.  It also said that buildings and trees didn't affect the 305.  I'm really leaning towards the 305 with the bicycle cadence attachment.  If I do go that route, I may get an inexpensive wrist HRM for schwimming.

thanks Tim, we missed the snow by about an hour which was nice. However the weather was cold around 39 degrees  and the wind was blowing about 10 mph, it made for a cold race .  We had a lot of fun though, I had organized a team of 8 co-workers for 5 of them it was their first race .  As far as running in snowshoes...well there are a few races like that  around in the winter I might try one out.

We're running a 5k this weekend; our 11 year old and I.  Well, he'll be 12 on Saturday when we run the race.  They are encouraging everyone to wear Halloween costumes.  Should be a blast!  http://www.irunfortheparty.com/view_race.php?id=3

You're lucky to have missed that snow!  It missed us as well but Montana and Saskatchewan got absolutely hammered.  Toronto and area, on the other hand, had summer.  We were somewhere in between!  Great job motivating your co-workers!

Kristina, I have used a number of Coach Troy Jacobson's DVDs (it's actually called Spinervals as noted above) on my trainer and enjoy them.  There are both 'virtual reality' such as his Autumn Ride and 'drill' type DVDs.  Both are good and motivating, at least for me.
