Good morning All.....Got onto the baseball diamond last night for the first time of the year. Its amazing how you can work out all winter long, but playing a simple game of softball can make you so sore in the next morning. All those 'other' muscles I guess. SO what's everybody got planned today?
I went for a swim this am, going to run at lunch, and then another softball game tonight. Oh yah, I'm hardcore!

Played my last game of hockey for the year. I've decided not to play summer hockey this year. Going to let my groin muscles heal.

Did you happen to watch the Caps - Rangers game last night?  Good stuff, lol no one pays attention to Hockey around here unless it comes to the playoffs.

Actually both games were pretty good last night. Loved the ending to New Jersey though. A great come back for Caroline to win.

Yep! JUST DO IT!

I just got a COOL deal!  I was out with a customer for lunch at a local restaurant, and we were talking with Keely the owner, and she had heard that I was doing some tris.  Well it just so happens that Keely swam on the Auburn swim team.  During our conversation she volunteered herself to help me with some swim technique.  So I am taking her up on it tomorrow morning if it works out for both us.

I am excited because I feel like I have gotten to a point where I really need some tweaking to get much better.  Kinda like in golf, moving from a 20 handicapper to a 12 may be fairly quick, but from a 12 to an 8 probably alot harder and more difficult.  (thought Chris might like that analogy).

I feel like I am moving thru the water pretty well, as I was counting strokes in the 50m pool last night and staying in the 36 to 38 range, but I am still slow compared to some of the peeps I am swimming with.  So, looking forward to some help, and we'll see how it goes.

Speaking of ... how fast are some of you "FAST PEOPLE" swimming?  I know there are differences for long distances vs. just doing hundreds.  Cruising speed not sprinting.  I am wanting to find a respectable benchmark.

SSMinnow - 2009-04-28 6:58 PM  I weigh 102lbs so if you weigh more than that, I would up the quantity.

Suzy

Thanks for the input everyone.  I'll avoid the coke and snickers.  Actually for most golf tournaments it's a Egg McMuffin and Chocolate Milk.

I've tried a few scenarios for am runs, but I don't think I ever gave myself enough time.  I was wanting to have a plan in place by now, but couldn't get it right so I had to ask.
I'm shooting for Suzy's 3 hour window.

Now, Suzy, I got quite a chuckle out of your above quote.  I come in slightly heavier - 270.  My 9 year old son outweighs you by 4 pounds.

And I still have a ton of catching up to do.  I hate being on the road two days in one week.

Rob, you picked have more sex as your preferred healing method.  Does that fit in pretty well with a groin injury because the groin is farely important to your method - unless you prefer a passive therapy.

What does everyone do with their old running shoes? I do cycle them through the running, walking, yard work path, but I am collecting several pairs of old running shoes that have retired to the walking catagory.  Does anyone know of a good charity for shoes, or do you keep a pair in your gym bag for short runs on the treadmill and a pair in the closet for longer runs outside?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Basically there are too many pairs of running shoes in my closest that are in too good of condition to throw away.

Yes, but your nine year old son is probably a foot taller than me too!

If I ate an Egg McMuffin before a race it would not be a good scene.  Low fat, no fiber is the no way to go. Trust me on this one.!

I tend to leave them in my vehicle when I'm swimming...They then magically disappear. I'd like to think that others will use them to pursue athletic endevours...See i"m over it already.
Actually, why not take them to the Salvation Army or a Woman's shelter something like that??

Hi gang, this is not tri related...but I have to share.  Today we found out that my husband does NOT have cancer.  We have been living under that cloud for the last 5 days.  It was a 90% chance of cancer.  Turns out he has a very rare condition that is not even enough to treat.    Good news, he can live to be a very old man with this "issue".  This and the fact my 6 yr old has been very, very sick for the last week (starting to make a little progress) has been tough.

I have done most of my workouts, I have a HIM scheduled for May 9th, but not all workouts have had the focus they deserve.  Tonight I will ride for 2 hrs and either veg or kick a$$.  Not sure which (I am relieved, but I think I am beginning to feel the stress of everything since now I no longer need to be strong for everyone).

But I now know we will go to FL, we will have a great family vacation, and I will race.
Thanks for letting me share.

First, Linda, thank goodness and what a relief for you and your family!  Yes, have a wonderful time racing in FL and whether or not you do a trainer ride tonite, you will be fine!  The gods must be looking out for you

I have been missing for a few days and trying to catch up is crazy!  Thanks all for the bday wishes and inspires, I was on a little getaway for 2 days and now I'm back.  It sure is hard to eat healthily on the road.  And why is it that one serving size is made for a family of four!?  omg...

Anyhow, it turns out that my 2 days of rest came at a great time, because at the end of last week my right ankle was just collapsing on me, at odd, inopportune moments, just walking!  My chiro diagnosed some issue with my peroneal tendon so it needed the rest.  I have not figured out yet what to do to strengthen the surrounding muscles.  I wonder if toe tapping and writing the abc's with my foot might help.   Perhaps calf raises?

Off to try to catch up with our thread.

Linda,  Fantastic News!!  I wish a long and healthy life for all your family!!

Kim, that is the same tendon I stressed,  I've been doing ice and Advil. Has worked so far but I don't know how stessed yours is.

Barry, all running shoes have a "running life" depending on the type of shoe, how you run, and where you run.  I've heard around 200 miles - but I'm guessing people with Suzy's running intensity go through them much faster.  Also, if you don't run even (meaning the bottoms of the shoes don't wear even) that will tax them more.  My LRS advised me that I would go through 2 pairs during the tri season if I kept up my running intensity and then one more for the winter. I usually replace them every 3-6 months.  Check with your LSB.  I've heard this is the biggest problem with runners, they don't replace their shoes often enough and then develop problems.  The problem is, the shoes need to be replaced before they LOOK like they need to be replaced.

Hey Linda...Way to hang in there with your desire to keep training.  I am betting that your ride will kick the proverbial A$$ tonight.  Glad to hear that your husband is going to be good to go.  That will make your next couple of weeks much easier to get your training in and have a good vacation to boot.

Donation is definitely the way to go. Up here there are a number of gently used stores which will gladly take any clothing we can give them. The other way is to look into the homeless shelters etc.

Linda. Such great news about the cancer. That must be a tremendous relief for your family.

Reub. As far as the healing I am willing to sacrifice a bit if it means I can heal my foot. Actually I told my wife about the recommended therapy and she indicated that my foot will likely hurt for a looooooooooong time

Linda-I am really happy for you and your family.  That must have been really scary.  No matter what your ride is like tonight, it will have been a good day!

Barry-I keep track of the miles on my shoes religiously.  Depending on the brand and the surface you run on most often, they can last anywhere from 250-350m IMO.  Write the date on your shoes when you start them.  You can also set them up in BT or another log system like Trainingpeaks.

Rob--I definitely would not be donating my running clothes or shoes as gently used!  By the time I pitch them, I know no one else that would wear my stuff!  We occasionally have LRS's that want the shoes.  The treads are used for roads apparently.

You make me smile Suzy...just got a new pair of 2140's today...replaced the dead ones with 120 miles on em'.

edit... AND I got a pair of Zoot compression socks.  First run was a shorter one but there was / is a positive effect.
