Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Have we got everybody well yet? Lisa fought off her cold and I am over mine. Have we heard from Scott in a while? He seemed to be pretty sick, but he is from the weaker sex and is probably having a tough time of it. How is everyone else doing health-wise? For all my pep talks, I still haven't gotten it together on the bike. I am way behind on my bike training, but in (relatively) good shape for swimming and running. And what is the tough part? The bike. So it makes no sense to be behind in bike training. My December 7 resolution is to get at least 20 minutes every single day on the bike/trainer, even if my plan doesn't call for it or I have done other workouts that same day. If nothing else, I figure that help with base building. And was that cool or what that Lisa had internet access on the airplane? Have fun in Las Vegas. |

He seemed to be pretty sick, but he is from the weaker sex and is probably having a tough time of it. How is everyone else doing health-wise? Thank you for your concern..actually I cannot get rid of this darn cold - it is going on a week now and I still can't get rid of the coughing. However, I have decided to "woman" up and not complain. Ok just a little bit..I get so little sympathy at home that I really would like a little from somewhere...anywhere. Decided that to keep myself from going out to eat with the office mates that I would go to the gym at lunch instead...novel idea. running is on the agenda so I will see if I remember how to operate the treadmill. Also - you will be glad to know that yesterday I spent 2 hours at the grocery store "on the perimeter of the store" stocking up for lunch and dinner and even packed my own lunch. (I didn't want Leah to yell at me anymore) Yep I have come a long way. I hope everyone is doing well. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Leah -The Bike portion is the longest part, usually 50-55% of the triathlon. So definitely work on it. I too need to get some long rides in over 3 hours in prep for my HIM but that will be easier for me in the spring-summer. If I still lived in CA (I lived in San Diego and San Francisco in the early 80's to mid 90's) I would be looking at some long winter rides and I plan to during goos weather times. As far as the trainer, try to make it fun! What do you do on the trainer? Do you have DVD's for encouragement? Music? Do you have to use the trainer due to time/light constraints? How about weekend rides? LeahDD - 2009-12-07 11:23 AM Have we got everybody well yet? Lisa fought off her cold and I am over mine. Have we heard from Scott in a while? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEyRg5mXLAQ Hey, those are all great things. Particularly looking good in the Brooks shoes. And yeah, you have a lot of work to do, but if you have been reading the last day or so of posts, you will see that you are not alone. And many people don't even have paralegals to check to see if they are hacking out their last breaths. See how lucky you are. Hope you shake the cough soon. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hear ya, and it's not tiring to hear, like you said all part of the journey, and we all experience it - for example... I had a total diet meltdown on Saturday. I was sick and tired of being hungry all the time, so I just ate, and ate, and ate all day long. Managed to take in ~2900 calories+ - it felt sooooooooooo good feeling full. Was up 3 pounds the next morning (i guess water weight cause i'm back to where I was on friday today). I looked back at my cal logs and the last time I had a total blow-out day like Sat was in mid-July, so I was LONG overdue. I'm actually glad this happened when it did so I can go into the holidays fully motivated and diet back on track. Seems like every 6 months or so I need to have 1 day - 1 week I don't give a damn days. But the great thing is we know where we are, we know where we want to be, when things get derailed for a bit it's not a big deal. Ease yourself back on track it'll all be a-ok. IdealMuse - 2009-12-06 6:35 PM Congrats on the great runs everyone! Wow on the time Kate! That's pretty darn awesome. I've had a not so stellar week in general. I've been hoovering between 188-192 for 3 or 4 weeks now back and forth like a ping-pong. There is no "Why" about it I know why... I just have to get things in check. I guess I'm letting it get to me a bit more then I should. I think Thanksgiving threw me off a bit letting too many things slide in. I'm working out just enough to try and beat back any weight gain. I've been doing this weight loss thing mostly full blast for a few years now and I'm bound to have time where I'm just dealing with burn-out. In the past that would have meant giving up entirely... but I'm a whole new person these days. But old habits are there just waiting for me to turn my back. Sorry I know this gets tiresome to hear, but it's all part of the journey here. No Matter new week right? Why do I feel like I've been saying that a lot lately. Anyway off to go do the bike I should have done yesterday. |

How about weekend rides? I watch whatever Chuck has on the TV during a trainer ride. Here is my question. If I am in the drops or even with my hands on the handlebars, I can't see what is on the TV. If I sit straight up, I can. Now, I have this belief that I am supposed to be doing the trainer down in the drops to get used to being in that position for an extended period of time (I am not aero yet). It is waaaaaaaaay more comfortable to be sitting straight up and, as mentioned, I can see the TV. So, is it "wrong" to be sitting straight up, better than nothing, or it doesn't make any difference so do whatever feels the best? |

So, is it "wrong" to be sitting straight up, better than nothing, or it doesn't make any difference so do whatever feels the best? I have the same issue - If I ride on the brake hoods I actually strain my neck looking up at the tv..obviously not a good thing. I really think you should ride in a position that is most like whne you ride on the road..this is probably more important for me then you because I need to get my body and back trained and flexible again. Obvioulsy anything is better then nothing but I find that I use different muscles both for the actual spinning as well as the positioning if I am riding on the brake hoods compared with straight up. Just my 2 cents but I will be trying to move the TV down so I can look at it from a riding position. Also - I tend to fall off the treadmill when I am watching T.V. and having to look up..so there is the safety factor also. Edited by jdbadger 2009-12-07 4:00 PM |

Anyway off to go do the bike I should have done yesterday. I agree. I have done the yo-yoing thing for years and the one truth that I have learned is that a single day doesn't derail your weight loss efforts. Two days in a row might be a problem, but not a single day once in a while. But if you are going to have a day of total and complete nonstop eating, anything you can do to minimize the damage really helps, both physically and mentally. If you are going to eat sweets, alternate fruit and cookies. If you are going for salty, alternate nuts and potato chips. And have guacamole and salsa with those chips, not cheesy sauce. I had one of these days recently and ate god knows how many calories in mixed nuts and fruit (I didn't have chips or cookies). Could it have been worse? Sure. But it is scary to think how many calories are in multiple pounds of grapes and a pound of mixed nuts (if I really wanted to know, I would calculate it. Let's just say that it is more than I can do in my head and I really don't want to know.) There was a day when my binges would have ended at a half gallon of ice cream after dinner. I don't want to go back to that. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Speaking of bike trainers - does anyone have issues with the back skewer not fitting into the trainer. Mine does not on the release side and the pressure keeps it in place. I think I will try and go to the bike shop tonight and find one that fits. does anyone have two different skewers - one for the trainer and one for when they ride outside? Maybe my trainer is just a little old.. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have my trainer set up in my basement. We have several metro metal storage shelves there. Last week I got two more shelves and two more posts and built an extension where I have my laptop at handlebar level, a nice set of speakers a little higher up and my spinervals collection between the speakers also a large fan to point up at me while I ride. I'll take a photo of the setup when I get home this weekend. |

Hehe. You guys crack me up. Bike Trainer Skewer: My Bike one doesn't fit on my Kurt Kinetic trainer, but the trainer came with one that I use. I switch them out when I need to, it's a pain, but I only have one bike at this point so it's my only option really. Maybe it's a great reason to buy a tri bike?! |

I'm up for a Holiday Challenge, but rather than pounds lost, how about a commitment to something or not doing something? For me now and weight loss, I fluctuate within a range and it doesn't really mean anything. My current dietary downfall is nuts (I think it must be the salt that I am craving). I would commit to not having more than 2 oz. of nuts per day. Some nuts are good and excessive nuts are not good. Two ounces is within the good category. Also, I do drink some water, but I wish I drank more water. I might also do four of our drinking glasses of water (I am sure they are more than eight ounces). But I really like the idea of a challenge. These challenges do really make me try hard. |

The weight is good with me since it is very objective...if we do something like Leah suggests it would be hard to find a "winner" But then again aren't we all Winners! ( I threw up a little in my mouth writing that) If we go Leah's route I will let you all pick what I need to do or go without..that will make it more interesting.

Member ![]() | ![]() Scott, youre pretty funny. I'm up for either challenge. It could be fun! I ran yesterday (4.25 miles) then swam 2100 m immediately after, and felt great.... gave me a glimmer of hope that I'm not an idiot for signing up for the HIM. The fact that January is creeping up on me is scaring me a little. Also, we may be moving to Washington state which is exciting, but will make training a bit more difficult. ![]() Happy training! |
