ironannekidd - 2010-09-15 7:09 AM So there is going to be a new HIM next year in the Poconos. It will be about 2 hours from where I live. I'm really thinking about doing it. It will be Oct 2, which can be cool in PA. Registration opens the beginning of Oct. I was already thinking about getting a compact crank on my bike this winter, the course will be hilly I'm sure.

What do the Ghoulies think?

Going from a triple to compact?  So what would be the advantages/diadvantages?

My tri bike doesn't have a triple.

Although since it would be a hilly course that would give me an excuse to get a new road bike.

I think you should register. Poconos in October may be a bit iffy but better cool than hot IMO
However, I am clueless on the bike question. I know nada about bikes except which part is the front.

You would wear your bike out with all the training rides and have to get a new one anyway- and it is too cool to wear out.  A new bike is definitely in order!

deehtz - 2010-09-15 10:04 AM The village told me a few weeks ago to stop stressing over which event to do etc. and to just go do one and have fun.
Good advice which I am prepared to take this Saturday.

I will do my first OWS tri.  It is a small one with a relaxed atmosphere.  I will have to push myself out the door early on a Saturday morning to go to a crowd of people that I don't know and so forth.  BUT I plan to have fun and just do what I can do.  I know I can finish, it is just a mater of time LOL

It is also supposed to rain, but the temps shouldn't be too cold I hope.

It rained at a tri I did last year. I had one of those plastic bags that has a draw string to close it. I kept my shoes and socks in the bag to try and keep them dry until I was ready for them. Just something you may want to think about since they're calling for rain.

I should probably not be trying to multi-task on reading Neal's race report and video broadcasting an anatomy lecture at the same time...

Haha...I'll finish the lecture first maybe...

So if your tri bike doesn't have a triple and you are considering putting a compact on, what does it have now?

It has a 53/39T

I'm thinking maybe changing to a 50/34T

I just suck at hills. I did change cassettes last year. I know the best way to get better at climbing hills is to climb more hills.

I was afraid of that.

I would like to try to do Jorge's winter maintenance plan this year.

Since I have the 2 trainers now I'm hoping to be able to get more time in on the trainer this winter, along with some outside rides.

Well you have 1 year to get good at it.  Save your money and ride your bike

That is all I have to add but I am a bad example!

I hate to admit it, but that's good advice.

I want to be strong. The only way to get that way is to work at it.

Hills, hills, hills, hills....love em and hate em. I'll probably take some "training camp" weekends out to the mountains next year in April-May depending on the weather...I guess I am lucky they are only 3 hrs away!

Ya, coming from a man who has more bikes than clean underwear!

But you still need to ride the heck out of those hills.
