Like some others on here, I will be following the "Be Iron Fit" 30 week training plan. In the training plan, it calls for doing Oly and 70.3 distnace races in weeks 18 and 22 respectively. I've registered for Ironman 70.3 Muncie which is one week late by the training plan and trying to decide which Oly race to do. I'm thinking about doing the Rev3 Tri in Knoxville but that one would be 3 weeks early. Does anyone see that has being much of a problem or should I try to pick one closer to week 18. There's also an Oly distance race here in Muncie, which would be just a week later than what the plan calls for.
This all brings me to another question. I don't really want to spend the next 30 weeks training and only do 3 triathlons. What are everyones thoughts on adding another race or two into the plan even if they are just sprints? Do I do a sprint on a Saturday morning and go back out on the bike just a little shorter later in the day or not race at all? I wouldn't intend on pushing myself so hard in the race that it takes some time to recover and hinders other training, but just go out and enjoying in a race and around other triathletes.

P.S... As I type this, I'm watching the 2010 IM Championship on DVR. Tomorrow is Day 1.

I actually really like doing a lot of "training" cycling events, run races and swim TTs in the weeks/months leading up to a big triathlon, and end up doing only a couple triathlons a season (1 as an A race, 1 as a B race and 1-3 short ones as fast-ish tuneups. Last season I did 4 run races, 3 cycling events, 1 sprint, 1 HIM and 1 IM. The closer I get to "the big one", the less racing I want to do, and instead prefer to focus on training. That seems to work for me, and maybe it will for you as well?? Others enjoy the triathlon racing so much (far less than training) that they need more races, and that's awesome too!! But I like racing in a non-triathlon setting - it forces me to focus on just the one sport!! Hope that helps?

Hey all,Today I just started the 20 week full iron program from this website. I should really invest in some shoe covers for my biking shoes. My feet are freezing after riding an hour in NYC. I've been using the trainer as of late.Run in the morning tomorrow and a swim at night.-Noah

Going into day two of the plan and I'm already of schedule. Today called for a swim and run. With the ice the schools were closed and so is the high school pool. No swimming for me today. Looks like I'll have to modify the run a bit.

Hopefully the weather will be a bit more cooperative with my plan from here on out.

jeffw85 - 2011-01-28 9:37 PM Hey folks, thanks for the warm welcome.  Saw the posts on Infinite.  I've used Perpetuem at my last two halves and usually I still seem to be starving before I get off the bike.  I guess I feel like I need something solid on my stomach and the perpet just wasn;t cuttin' it.  Yet I understand GI issues can become a problem, especially looking at the longer distance of IM.  I like the idea of a all-in-one solution of infinit but I'm open to suggestion here.  I'd like to start trying some new nutrition strategies now so I have time to formulate a good plan before raceday.

Jeff

Hey Jeff - I'm having the same issues.  My body now hates Perpetuem after a few halfs on it last year.  I have to find something new, and something that will sustain me better, but I haven't found it yet.  I hear good things about Hammer's Sustained Energy, which has carb, protein, and electrolyte complexes so from what I'm hearing it's as good as anything.  I heard about another system the other day from a coach, but at the moment I can't remember what it was - will send the name to you if I remember it.

If an empty stomach is the issue, have you tried the Clif Blocks?  I get the margarita flavor, and I find it takes care of me (untested at IM distance, though!).  Also, I've heard a lot of people pop solid foods into their race early, like bananas, etc.  I tried this at a 70.3 last year, and it went pretty well.

HUGE disclaimer - I'm not great at nutrition, just sharing some thoughts since I'm in the same boat.  If you find anything that works, let me know.

If any of you are Infinite users, or would like to try, today is their annual 50% off (then 40%, then 30%, etc. depending on how long you wait). Go get it! I just stocked up at 50% off, wooot!

Count me in as a "Most Likely".  having to work out a few things, but I really think I am going to do this race--1st IM for me!

I have a swimming background, and am a decent runner.  I need lots of work on the bike, but I know i can do it.

I have completed 3 triathlons--2 sprints and 1 Oly.  I plan to do a half mary, an HIM, and 1 or 2 sprint tris this year before Lousiville.

I have never done a marathon, so this will be interesting.  In fact, my longest run to date has only been 11 miles, but if needed to, I could do probably do 18 right now at a 9 minute pace

I'm in alaska, so my training is going to be inside until late April or begining of May.  Heat may be a concern, but I grew up in the South.  If I plan it correctly, I will be in Kentucky for 2 weeks prior to the race which should help me acclimate to the heat a little bit.  I attended the University of Kentucky in the early/mid 90's and have lots of friends and family there to cheer me on.

So i have a question for all of you doing the Don Fink 30 week program--are you doing the "get me to the finish line" or the intermediate or the competitive?

SO, I am tentatively here to play.  I hope to click the registered button this weekend.

Good luck to you all,

Nathan

The race will be filled soon.  They've already sent an email saying the race has nearly reached capacity.  Time to pull the trigger!  I'd give it until the end of the month, tops.  But the earlier you can register the better.

Don't miss out on the fun!

Hi all,

I just started reading the thread; thanks for posting.  I too am training for IMLO.  Last season I did my first of 3 triathlons and Louisville will be my first IM. I am planning to do a mixture of races over the next few months with a possible HIM in July.  My goal is to finish IMLO strong and with a smile.

Currently I am conditioning and then will start my 20wk IM plan at the end of March.  For conditioning I have been doing 4 to 6 w/o a week for an hour or so each... weights x3 then swim, bike, run, off day = week.  The weights are core focussed. By the end of March I want to be up to 6 to 8+ hrs a week with only S,B,R focus.
Does anyone see any pitfalls here?  My concern is that I may be being too conservative with my training.  But on the flip side I want to avoid early burnout from training, work, life imbalance.

Thanks.

Redremy,

I really can't say if you will experience any pitfalls or not.  I can say that a high percentage of the folks here started Don Fink's Be IronFit plan yesterday.  It is a 30 week program that litterally started yesterday and will end on race day.   In his book, he lists a "Just get me to the finish line" plan, and intermediate plan, and a competitive plan.  I chose the intermediate and feel that it will allow for the necessary life balande.  The first week is 6 hours, second is 7 hours.  I picked up the book at the local Barnes & Noble.  You could start this weekend and be in good shape.

Best of luck to you in whatever you choose.  I just thought I would share with you what many have reccomended and many of us are using.

Welcome redremy-

I used the 20wk plan last year from BT;s basic plan and it worked well for me. If you continue doing what you are doing for base then continue with the plan, you should be ok.

Does anyone know how to rig snow tires on a tri bike? ...just kidding, stay warm!!!!

I just spent the last two days trying to fix my rear derailleur bc it won’t shift into the lowest gear along with shifting problems in general. I bought my first tri bike this year (Valdora PHX) and now learning how to fix and adjust all the parts. I'm learning alot of new things. I love my Bike!!!

I was having a similar problem with my rear derailer. I took my bike to Bicycle Link downtown Savannah and it was a problem with my shifter cable, they fixed it immediately.

I'm doing the Tybee half marathon too. I'm going to push through it even though I've been having knee pain from IT band issues. I promised my family that after the race I would go see a doctor about it, I knew if went went this week she would tell me not to do the race, and I hate that answer.

I am on the edge about signing up or not. This would be my 2nd IM if I do it. I am just wondering how the swim in the river is...is the water totally black? brown?  slimy? I know this sounds stupid and or funny to some of you reading it but my head gets to me when I get into water that I can not at all!! I totally prefer ocean swims so this is a factor for me.

I appreciate any info!

happy tranining....Alicia

I swam in the ohio river once before, in a tri in maysville, Ky. It was a unique experience! I did swim into branches and logs but that current feels sooo good. You could float downstream and get a PR! I personally don’t think it will be that bad but who knows? I never did Louisville.
