So i have a problem...i strained a muscle last week. Took a couple days off but still not better. Uncomfortable when sitting very tight in that area...sometimes cant lean against that area. Should i take a couple more days off or just keep training with the injury?? Anyone else had this

I agree with the others, take a couple days off. You may want to just swim for a couple days as well. I have found some slower paced swimming will help loosen up the joints and much less impact to the body.

So at this point in training would you take off some time still or just suck it up and keep training with the injury?? We have like 8 weeks left right??

I would see your DOC and see what it is and what needs to be done...than train accordingly....

EXACTLY!!!    Only you and your doctor should be prescribing action and assessing your physical state.

Longest week so far training---a little over 16 hours. I'm tired and sore. Racing 70.3 Augusta this weekend as a tune up. This training volume is spooling up on me quickly. Thankfully I've been largely injury free. Hope you guys are doing well--the race is getting eerily close.

Last week was my biggest week to date so far, as well.  Feeling both tired and gaining some confidence.  Long run was longest so far, and felt much better than my previous long runs.  Still glad we have another six weeks or so.

Long week here too, 15 hours.  There's a couple longer ones coming up though, but really what's a couple more hours at this point anyways, right?

I'd better get off this computer and get out on my run...

I did my first 4000 yard swim yesterday and it went well.  The water was about 65 degrees so I tested out my neoprene booties and swim cap.  I stayed warm throughout, especially my feet.  My hands were a little purple when I finished but I still had good function in them.  One more OWS opportunity on Saturday and then I'm relegated to the pool.

Training is going ok, though I'm starting to feel it.  Long ride increases to 5 hours and run to 2 hours.  Aches and pains are adding up.  One thing starts to feel better and then something else crops up.  PT and massages every other week seem to help.

Thoughts from my middle length midweek run today (9 miles):

What is everyone using for a training pace on your long runs?  I've never been good at slowing down enough on long runs when training for running races, such as a marathon or HM.  But I realize the generally accepted rule that one ought to slow down to about a minute/mile or more less than "race pace".  So for our purposes, are you using your anticipated Ironman marathon pace or are you using your stand alone marathon pace?  In a nutshell, I find myself running comfortably on all my long runs at what I hope will be my IM marathon pace, and in reality is about a minute/mile slower that if I were training for a stand alone marathon.  Does that sound right?

Other thoughts:  Why are there so fricken many dead racoons out here lately...

For me the midweek runs are at z2 (8:00-:30) and the long runs are a bit slower z1-z2, (8:25-8:45)....My Ironman pace I hope to maintain is about a 9:15-9:30.....

For those of us using FINK, what zone do you plan on staying in during entire race.....z1, z2, z3?

I plan on trying to stay in between Z1-Z2 for the day.  What about everyone else?

How's the Fink plan working out with your work schedule?

Pretty good.  I'm doing the Intermediate plan for time and injury prone reasons.  I have a bike trainer at work that I keep at my station.  I try to do most of my short rides there.  Runs are almost always off duty, but I have done a few before work.  I sit down each week and plan out my workouts based on my schedule.  Some weeks are harder than others.  I don't do the long workouts on Saturday and Sunday.  I typically do the ride during the week because of the time required and save the long run for the weekend as it doesn't eat up as much family time.

I've got a spectator positioning question for any locals or veterans. My people (wife, 3 kids, wheelchair-bound father) will be coming out later in the day and they don't stick-and-move so well these days. So I'm thinking the best place for them is one spot on the run course. This way, we'd see each other a couple of time because of the loops and hopefully near the finish. Any recommendations? In a perfect world, I see in my mind a park, on the run course, 1/2 mile from the finish, with an ice cream shop nearby. Does it exist?

How's this for icing on the cake. After spin class last night I walked up to find my truck broken into. Wallet, watch, brief case gone. Good ol smash and grab. Quick in and out. Now I get to take a day and rebuild my wallet. Cops said 2-3 time a week they get calls from the two gyms in our town. You get too comfortable then you get a sucker punch to the gut. At least my training is going well this week.

Not sure about the ice cream shop, but the finish is right by Tempe beach park. Your folks can set up in the grass next to the sidewalk you'll be running on and they'll see you at least twice. On the third lap, you turn left to go to the finish before you get back to the spectators, but they could cheer you on at the turn. It's a good set-up for spectating; the time I volunteered, I saw lots of people chatting with friends and family as they hobbled along.

I would recommend they stand on the bridge, just above the transition area.  Easy access, and they will be close enough to touch you on one part of the loop, and close enough to the finish line that they can see you pass and then make it to the finish line before you finish.

Sorry about that, I know that has got to be a really PITA. Its like one of those life taxes that just suck.  Nothing you can do about it but deal, so hopefully the damage an inconvenience are minimal.

I agree with the post about find a place in the grass along on the water/park.  when i voluteered then hung out to the end just to cheer to the end, I set up in one spot - just a 1/2 mile down from the run out, and stayed put.  that way the runner keeps coming to you rather than constantly searching for the runner.    there are some benchs along the water, sidewalk so father in wheelchair can get there (how cool is that - your wife being willing to have father in wheel chair and three kids part of her cheering brood - I am giving her a huge shout out when I run/shuffle/walk past), and some little vendors here and there.  the run course is easy enough to access that they will figure out their perfect spot and stay put  - then when you start on your last loop, they will have time to get to the finish.

Well, I think I'm still in the game!  After a miserable long ride a couple weeks ago (just a bad day) I had good workouts since.  I'm rebounding fast and feel up to speed with the Ironman level 3 Essential week by week training guide plan.  I think if my long ride and 2.5 hour run this weekend go ok, I'm in good enough shape to survive!

Sorry to hear that.  I am always paraniod about that at my gym.  I'm there at 5:00 am and I am worried someone will smash and grab my gym bag, containing the iPad, two HTC phones, my clothes for the day, iPod, Garmin, wallet, the week's gels, etc.  I should probably start leaving it in the trunk...or carry less expensive crap?

I hate to ask the obvious, because I'm sure there's a good explanation, but can't these things be locked in a gym locker?  I'm lucky that I don't have to worry about these problems in my gym's parking lot, and I'm genuinely sorry that this happened.

My gym specifially says leave it in your car.  Probably a CYA thing for THEM...

But I still think my car is safer since I have had my gym locker broken into, and never my car.  BUT, I don't leave anything of value in site.  I will hide stuff under the seat or in the trunk.  Potential theives won't see anything of value, and to break in and search for possibly nothing to be had, is probably not worth the risk.

It really is a smash and grab.

Same thing happened to my husband last year. He left his breifcase on the front seat...had his computer, passport, and work essentials. The police told us that theives frequent gyms...its an easy smash and grab. Always put your "stuff' in the trunk of your car is the rule now!

I agree that the grassy area in the park is the place for specators. The area closer to Tempe Preforming Arts center is less crowded than the area around transition. I was so happy to see members of my family while I was on the run. My family moved around and suprised me...it was an extra boost of energy.
