If it was me, I would go for the PR if you feel you are trained for it (or relatively close). But the reason is two fold. One reason is I struggle to run races with other people if there is any amount of people at all. I get into a zone and just don't pay attention and wind up seperated any ways. Saturday I was going to run the 5K with 2 friends simply because I didn't want to go all out. Did fine for the first mile and half and next thing I know I ramped up following someone that passed and hadn't even realized it. The other reason I would is my simple competitive tendancies. I don't think either is wrong, and if you do go for it, you are trained well enough that the HM shouldn't set you back in your training. |

Expert 1151 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED Paula & Wesley- Congrats on your races! Abake- I ordered some of the exercise (strength training) DVDs you suggested off Amazon. Did one of the 20 mins sessions the other day & my legs were sore for a couple days. I think these will be great to work into my routine...now if only I can get my routine going... The weekends are no problem. I was able to get in a run & bike this weekend. I just have to commit to being consistent during the weekdays. I always seem to let work, kids, the house, etc eat up my workout time. This week I'm going to try and make training a priority. |

Do you think you could PR? If you got the training in and its a possibility I would go for the PR. Then you could cheer your friends on, take pics, etc.. at the finish line. |

Set a new PR for my slowest 5K ever. Body went 5K, feet went more like 10 slip sliding in the blowing snow! Oh well, had some fun running with some friends. To answer your question, I have done 14 as my longest, but I have a pretty good set up with fans and cable TV, etc. plus I don't have to worry about time limits (unless my wife wants to use it!) Well, I was planning to run ten miles this morning but it's about 9 degrees with wind chill, flurrying and lots of ice on the roads. I think I will meet my training buddy for lunch and then do my long bike this afternoon (Sufferfest video) and keep fingers crossed for better weather tomorrow. Does anyone in this group do long (by long I mean more than 8) mile runs on the dreadmill? I dont' have one at home so have to go to the gym and typically there is a 30 minute limit during peak times for treadmills. 14 miles on the treadmill is unreal. Being able to actually control the environment with fans would make a huge difference. |

Expert 943 Highlands Ranch, CO | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED Great job Paula and Wesley! I will always wonder what it feels like to run that fast Everyone is doing so well with their workouts. That is impressive. Not always easy to do in the winter months. About the two hour CompuTrainer class. I really liked it! We didn't have the newest videos of the IM courses (they are being purchased) but we were able to do the CDA course (or I guess the old course since they are changing it this year). It was interesting to see all the stats on the screen though I don't know what all of them meant It was probably the most challenging workout I have had on the trainer in a long time and it felt good. I think it is so cool that you can basically simulate riding a course and the resistance is controled by some electronics. I have to admit that I am a bit competitive when it comes to the bike so that added a little excitement to the whole experience as well. We were done by 7:40am and in our cars by 8:00am. What is also great is that we are getting a pretty good deal for riding so early. If I had an extra $1500.00 I would purchase my own. I am doing it again this Saturday. If anyone dreads riding the trainer, then you should definately do a computrainer class! The social aspect of it was also great and I am sure that added to my positive experience. It was a small group of people all doing IM or HIM and it was easy to converse and share some experiences. I added two pictures below just to give you an idea of the set up.

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED I got in an hour on the trainer doing Jorge's prescribe program today. 2X 20 mins at 80 - 85%. Followed it up with 4 miles on the treadmill. Not a planned brick, more for convenience and to accomodate my long day at work. Driving to PA for a meeting then driving home. I hope everyone has a great day and that you get your training in! |

Extreme Veteran 1700 Normal, Ill. | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED I love my Computrainer. Incredibly efficient. I don't live close enough to Vision Quest to use theirs so having my own was something that made sense. You can do similar work with adjusting resistance on a good trainer and watching a clock. But the CT is much easier and lots of fun. Real Videos are great. I did kettlebells last night. Kicked my butt and I love it. Also ran 30 mins at the gym. Then swam with Masters this morning. Still sluggish in the water over distance. Sprints are good though. All good. Ken, 20 mins at 80-85% X 2 is kicking butt, buddy. I have a hill repeat on the CT with 3 X 15 mins. Have a great day.

Regular 89 | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED How many calories do you eat every day? I've seen things all over the map on the web. I've never tracked my nutrition intake very closely until this year - I've just always tried to eat fairly healthy. I've been tracking it fairly closely this year and I've been averaging about 1700 - 1800 caloried prior to workouts, but I've had some days a good bit lower than that. I've lost about 5 lbs since we started this group, but I'm worried that I might not be getting enough - especially on days with heavy physical activity. Any thoughts? |

I am down about 5 lbs as well and I have been doing very well with almost no cheating. I have not had to worry about the counting and I am definitely not hungry. I do need to up the workouts as I have had some days with zero training at all, but I am moving in the right direction. 45 lbs to go!!! |

Extreme Veteran 1700 Normal, Ill. | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED I use LiveSTRONG.com's myplate to track food. Also using BodyBugg to see how many cals I'm really burning. I'm getting about 1800 to 2400 on Paleo with fruit, vegetables and lean meat. They say take your base metabolism, add in the cals burned in exercise and subtract 500 for a pound loss a week. I have found on paleo that I am energized and focused with far fewer cals than that. The body relies more on fat and less on carbs. I've lost a few in the first couple of weeks, but we will see what the long term brings. I feel better no matter what., |

I've started using the my fitness pal app as well. I really like it - I love the scan function. That's where I normally am, but I had a few days over the weekend where I was really low, and I felt it when I was back at work yesterday - just didn't feel great. I pigged out a little and was up 1 lb this morning so it's back to work today. |

That is a tough temp when you are used to it at that distance! I am looking forward to your race report!Once again I would like to thank everyone for all the good luck wishes. I came in under my goal but I think it could have been a little better. I finished in 2:21:33 at a 10:55 pace. (Goal was 2:30) Felt real good the first 9 or 10 miles and then it kind of went downhill from there. Let me preface this by saying that I'm from the lowcountry only about 45 miles from Charleston and we don't do cold very well. But when I got out of the car it was 29 degrees with a strong wind(which was in my face ALL day) and I almost froze. Just checked the weather report and next Saturday is supposed to highs in the low 70s and low in the 50s. Go figure. I think there was about .5 mile where there wasn't a head wind.(Maybe) I'll post a race report sometime in the next day or so. Training for the HIM and IMFL is never going to stop this year, so I'm back in the pool tomorrow. I hope Paula was a little better prepared for the wind and the cold than I was. x2 |

Wesley was right it was cold and windy but i tend to do ok in those conditions since half of my training was similar. I kept my pace more or less for the first 23 then the 30 mph ( thats what it felt like) headwind really kicked in and my pace dropped to 10:30's. I was proud to finish in 4:14:47 averaging 9:39. I dont feel that bad either. One big blood blister and still have my toe nails! I can't even imagine running that long, let alone getting all those miles done that quickly. Wow. |
