Michael-congrats on the race and the anniversary.  Sounds like a great day ahead.  I have ridden the entire Blue Ridge Parkway including where it turns into the Skyline Drive in VA.....but I did it on a motorcycle.  We traveled up there several times years ago when I was motorcycling a good bit.  Absolutely beautiful stretch of road.

Headed to the pool for a 3300 yard workout...that's long for me.  Seems like a long time since I swam but it was only last Friday.  Enjoy the day everyone.

Weigh in - 179.8.  So, I lost .8lb.  I too had my share of chips and beer, but luckily had some longish workouts this weekend.  Have a 66/3 brick today with a group.  Should be fun.

Rene - Wish I could help, but is always very temperate here, and I don't travel for races.

Hope you all have a nice Memorial day.  Remember the reason....

Experior - 2012-05-28 8:29 AM BTW Stu, I haven't forgotten about my promise to write up some imbalance-correcting exercises.  Working on it...

Michael, no rush at all.  I've been imbalanced a long time... in more ways than one!  Mainly just wanted to compare notes with what my PT gave me to do a few years ago (which, though it has helped, clearly hasn't finished the job).  Have a happy birthday, anniversary, memorial day!

Rene - I was hoping you'd forget.  HA!  I'm up 1.5 lbs as well.  I'm hoping it is mainly b/c I was good and hydrated this morning and had a solid week of training which seems to add a bit extra weight for me.  But I fear it is due to my daughter, the baker and pasta specialist, being home.  This week is our 3x / year company meeting (with dinner, etc.) and my 30th college reunion this coming weekend.  One day at a time.  Cookout with family tonight :-)  Swim and general exercises this afternoon.

Randy, just to complete the Geritol thread, Geritol was the corporate sponsor of Lawrence Welk... and yes, brings back memories of my grandparents and black and white TV as well :-)

Happy Memorial Day, everyone, and take a moment today to remember all who have served as well as those who have suffered loss due to war.

Stu

May 21st - 206.2lbs

May 28th - 204.4lbs - Down 1.8lbs which I believe are just water weight fluctuations ... BBQ yesterday with some Nuernberger sausages, Weisse Brats and beer from my hometown in Germany Duisburg didn't help the weight loss ...

20 mile bike ride this morning = done

Possibly an OWS swim this afternoon but not sure yet!

Well, swim done...but not without a bit of a struggle.  About 200 yards in I realized that I may have had an extra glass of red wine last night! Made it through but wasn't my best swim.  Easy hour on the trainer at some point today.

Good job getting the swim done Randy.

Rene: I like Michael's idea of getting the body acclimated. I think doing some short runs in the heat will feel like nothing for you after a couple weeks of it. I was up this week too. I'm blaming PMS.

Mark: Way to gut out a cold swim!

Michael: Happy birthday and anniversary to you and the Mrs! Great job with the 10K, but so sorry you weren't feeling so well after. You'll figure this out. May take some time and a few more bad moments, but you will and you'll find a way to get make it through the longer stuff.

Randy: Awesome long swim!

Michael: Nice work with the weight loss!

As for me, I gained two pounds. That's even with getting some runs back in this past week. EEK!

I've got a run at lunch and afternoon swim team on the agenda today. Had way too much good food yesterday and am paying for it today in some serious bloating and general squishy feelings.

Hope you all enjoy your Memorial Day festivities.

Randy:  Nice job on the swim.

Mark:  way to get it done!

Blanda:  Hi!

Michael:  I really appreciate all the excellent knowledge you have been sharing.  Wish I could reciprocate!!

OK, I too want to lose weight.  I went from 211 (can't believe I got this heavy) last November and am now down to 188.  I would like to get to 180 pounds by the end of the summer.

Easy 8.5 mile run tonight, felt pretty good.  I'm currently done with day 8 out of 12 day stretch.   I'm still going to keep my streak of 100 plus miles per month (inspired by Jason).

Happy Memorial Day!!!

Random article on heat acclimatization that popped up on the Wash Post this am.  More general than specific to tris / endurance sports, but a couple of interesting tidbits of info.

Kind of a quiet group today.  Bike intervals and then a short run for me this evening.

Rene-I agree with Michael on getting accustom to the heat.  I know you do alot of your riding on the trainer. Is that inside in the AC?  Do you do much running outside currently?   Our weather here is very similar to yours in terms of temps and humidity. Unfortunately, we seem to have jumped into Summer over the past week and have another 4 months of brutal weather ahead of us.  Hopefully, we can avoid a busy hurricane season.

Randy, it does seem to be quiet today. I did my normal bike to gym, swim, bike home routine tonight. I'm feeling good, but I've definitely leveled off in my training as of late. I have my 2nd race coming up on the 9th, another Sprint, and after that I'm going to start a 6 week Oly training plan, so my weekly training time should jump up pretty significantly, which is ok since I'm a teacher and have all Summer to wake up, train, sit on the couch, and sleep! That totally makes up for the low pay! Sealed

It is quiet on here today.

I've started a heat acclimitization program based on information from :
http://www.badwater.com/training/webbonheat.html

Great site with a lot of cool information. The Badwater athletes make the rest of us look like wimps.

The majority of my runs have been at 5:00 p.m. However, I'm moving some of them to mid day runs to get used to the heat. Yes, the rides on the trainer are in the air conditioning with 2 fans blowing full blast. Riding in the heat (outside) doesn't really seem to bother me. Now that school is out it makes it easier to ride outside mid day.

The biggest problem is that I live where it is very hot and humid and below sea level. Lubbock is at 3400 feet, hot and very dry. Hence the reason for sitting in the dry sauna to get used to the heat. I spent months taking cold showers and sticking my face in ice water for Alcatraz prep. Sitting in the dry sauna can't hurt. I may also add climbing the bleachers are the football stadium during the middle of the day to the plan. There is a substantial hill on the run course that most people end up walking. Since we only have overpasses here the bleachers or treadmill will have to be the next best thing.

Rene: I can handle hot and humid, no problem, but I get in a sauna and I feel like beef in a dehydrator. Don't wanna move and feel all groggy and lethargic!

I FINALLY got out on the bike today. I had 45 minutes to get something done. I decided to take up the 1st hill of the Xterra course. It didn't feel as bad as I thought it would! I'm going to try and get out there earlier next time to get the next set of hills before the drop off. Eventually I want to cut off enough time on those two climbs to be able to drop in the dirtbowl for some fun before having to pick up the kids.

Will be going to swim in a bit. For sure this time. We're all dressed for it. Yesterday's lunch run was skipped for a nap after a tough morning at the office, then swim went out the window after a rough time at dinner with the kids. Oi.

Anxiously awaiting our summer work schedule to come out.  I hope to do a half IM that's right in my hometown.  I planned a swim and short run last night but guess the recent IM has taken more out of me than I want to accept.  Tonight I have a trainer ride planned.

Hey everyone -- quick checkin from the coffee shop before leaving for an experimental trail run.  Not sure how that's going to go, but I have to try...

Have a great day everyone!  I return to constant connectivity tomorrow night, so I'll be more reliable, mentor-wise, starting then.  Until then, get some great training in everyone!

This mornings run workout was horrible. I should have known something was up when I slept in until 9. Went out at 10:00 on my 50 minute run. Only ended up running less than 2 miles. My heart rate was 205 at one point running my normal pace. Even with stopping and walking it wouldn't come down to where it should have been.

My first impulse was to try to finish the workout and suck it up. Then I decided that would be stupid as I would just dig myself into a bigger hole by continuing the run.

While I know stopping was the right thing it still pisses me off that my body wouldn't cooperate. Taking the rest of the day off to recover against my desire to train. Grrr... Guess I'll clean the house instead and try again tomorrow.

I started out in Triathlons last year and bought a $250 cheap road bike from Walmart. I have since upgraded and added an aero bar and clip pedals. I also just bought a brand new seat which is very comfortable.

I have been looking around on ebay, craigslist and other places to keep an eye out for some cheap Triathlon bikes and today I came across this one here.

DESCRIPTION:

This is a 2010 Fuji Aloha 2.0, however it was purchased new this year. It is a 56cm size frame, however I am 5'7" tall and I just put a shorter stem on it to make it fit me. I have the original stem that goes with it as well. This bike is really fast. I have just installed a new Bontrager Trip 2 computer on it. It has a Shimano 105 rear derailleur and a Shimano Tiagra front derailleur. I want $800.00 without the HED disc wheel, or $1200.00 for the bike and the disc wheel. The disc really adds a lot of speed to this already fast bike. The disc wheel also includes it's own new Shimano 9 speed cassette so you can switch easily from the stock wheel to the disc. Price is firm.

What do you think? I know its not Ultegra group or even 105 all the way around ....

d3term1ned-might be an OK price.  I just looked on www.bicycledoctorusa.com as they sell Fuji online at good prices.  They have a new Aloha for $1395 and they typically will offer further reduction for cash/check.  They have a bunch of different Fuji bikes including several tri models.

All bikes fit differently.  A 56 with one manufacturer may be very different than a 56 from another.  Fit should be the first priority.  There are lots of good "entry level" tri bikes in the $1200-1800 range.  My first was a Cervelo P1 (very aero aluminum frame) with ultegra and it was around $1700.

What size is your current bike. How tall are you?

Crazy end of the week for me. Early morning run before heading to University of Alabama for son's orientation session.  Met with his xc/track coaches this afternoon and got a tour of the facilities.  Guess all that football money trickles down to the lesser sports. Mom's been taking daughter to camp so she meets us here tonight. Orientation runs through Friday at lunch but I have to drive back (3.5 hours) tomorrow night for work on Friday. Then I have a tri local Saturday morning while Mom and son head to Nashville for track meet Saturday night.

Looking forward to the race Saturday.  It is just 2 miles from the house so I am very familiar with the course.  Tough hill coming right out of transition always makes the beginning of the bike and run tough.

Anyone else racing this weekend?

Randy: Bittersweet time for your family with a child going off to college. I'll be fun to hear of his adventures running for his school! Isn't it nice not to have to travel for races!? I'm sure you'll do great and enjoy yourself.

I get to do the last GEAR adventure race of the year this Saturday. There's also a sprint triathlon Sunday, but I wanted to do something fun and off-road. I love traipsing through the boonies! I did set up for a sitter for the triathlon on the 17th though.

Rene-you did the smart thing and you know it.  Missing or cutting short a workout matters little in the big picture.  Any thoughts on why the high HR?

Blanda-glad you were able to get out and ride and are working back into the swim.....USA/Brazil friendly tonight...any predictions?

Randy: Brasil has at least 5 in form players from La Liga and Serie A. They will be a challenge for USA to defend against, but being at home in front of a large crowd, they'll all be bringing their A games. We have our GK and two strikers bringing in EPL experience, and Michael Bradley who has been having great success playing in Serie A. That with our MLS stars bringing in their physical strength and heart, it will be an entertaining match for sure. It think it will be close, maybe 2-1, Brasil (but I'm hoping USA will bring it and be composed up front to prove me wrong!!).

Not sure that the new style of play that worked so well against Scotland will work against Brazil.  Brazil can handle the high pressure high intensity style that Klinsman has been implementing.  It was a nice win against Scotland but tonight is a whole different level.  Definitely a plus to have so many US players playing in the EPL, La Liga and Serie A and getting a consistently high level of competition.  MLS, while improving, is still the minor leagues compared with Europe.  Unfortunately, I'm going Brazil 3-1.  Hope I'm wrong.  Good chance to test new tactics against some of the best if not the best!
